Community Partnerships to Address Social Determinants of Health among Older Adults
Focusing on social determinants of health (SDOH) among older adults is key to addressing health disparities, maintaining independence in their homes/communities, improving health outcomes, and avoiding high-cost institutional care. While primary care settings are equipped to meet older adults’ physical health needs, the network of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) is designed to meet social needs (e.g., transportation, nutrition, caregiver support). Yet, cross-sector community partnerships between AAAs and primary care are rare. This article shares an evaluation of one such partnership, where SDOH screenings were routinely implemented in primary care, yielding social prescribing and direct referral to AAA’s support services. Participants included 385 Medicare beneficiaries (Mage = 72.5), including low-income older adults with multiple health conditions. Implementation successes and barriers were uncovered; nearly 75% had unmet SDOH needs, yet only 9% accepted AAA referral. We propose how the Cooperative Extension System (CES) can serve as an authentic partner to build bridges between primary care, community-based educational programming, and the national network of over 600 AAAs. Aspects of CES can be leveraged through a model of health extension to address older adults’ complex social and functional health needs through community-based healthcare and public health interventions, in the pursuit of health equity across the lifespan
Monitoring Ocean Climate with World Ocean Database
The World Ocean Database (WOD) is the world\u27s most extensive collection of quality-controlled ocean profile and plankton data that includes measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, silicate, chlorophyll, alkalinity, pH, pCO2, TCO2, Tritium, Freon, Helium, Neon, and plankton. WOD is updated four times per year and available without restriction. WOD is the foundation for several stand-alone products that are instrumental for ocean climate monitoring. The primary product is the World Ocean Atlas (WOA) - a set of global climatological fields ofmajor essential ocean variables (EOV- temperature, salinity, etc., calculated at 102 standard depth levels at one- and quarter-degree spatial resolution grids. Maps and data files of WOA23 include the horizontal fields representing annual, seasonal, and monthly spatial distributions of analyzed data and statistics. These climatologies are calculated based on the entire data collection as well as on decadal sub-sets. The Ocean Heat (OHC) and Salt (OSC) Content anomalies, as well as Sea Level changes for monthly, seasonal, annual and pentadal periods are based on WOD derived data. These assessments are updated and published quarterly. For data-dense regions, the high-resolution regional climatologies on a one-tenth-degree grid are developed. WOD, WOA, OHC, and OSC assessments and hi-resolution regional climatologies are widely used for ocean climate monitoring and research studies such as the State of the Climate and Global Oceans reports, numerous publications, and atlases. All these data and data products are available for the ocean scientific community without restriction
Abdominal Ultrasound Image Dataset for Organ Classification and Disease Detection
This is a dataset of Ultrasound (US) images of abdominal organs. US imaging is widely accessible and a very common diagnostic tool, as it is non-invasive and does not involve radiation risk. This dataset was curated solely for research in deep learning, with potential applications in supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised learning to support disease detection in resource-constrained settings.
The dataset comprises 5,005 images of different abdominal organs, namely: Abdominal Aorta (0), Gallbladder (1), Hepatic Vein (2), Kidneys (3), Liver (4), Ovaries (5), Pancreas (6), Portal Vein (7), Spleen (8), and the Urinary System (9), which includes the Urinary Bladder, Prostate, and Uterus. Images were collected from 563 patients at MH Samorita Medical College and Hospital and in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The author tried her best to curate this dataset systematically and organize uniquely. Every folder and subfolder has correctly numbered, serially ordered images, making it the first dataset one of its kind in terms of structure and usability. This ensures reproducibility and reliability for researchers worldwide
In total, the dataset is organized into five distinct formats/folders, described below. Two radiologists were examining the patients.
Radiologist one: organ_classification_1: Contains 2,784 images of the 10 organs listed above. Designed for classification tasks. anomaly_detection_1: Contains two sub-folders: normal (2,014 images) and abnormal (799 images). Designed for anomaly detection tasks. organ_classification+anomaly_detection: Contains 2 sub-folders. One represents the normal organs (1,948 images) and one represents abnormal cases (981 images) including a newly added ascites folder. Ascites is a condition where the abdominal cavity becomes overly filled with fluid, and it was separated as a distinct abnormal class. This hybrid dataset (organ_classification+anomaly_detection) is an experimental extension combining both tasks. While curated carefully, users are advised to double-check labels for their specific tasks.
Radiologist two: anomaly_detection_2: Contains two sub-folders: normal (656 images) and abnormal (269 images). This batch was collected last and was used for semi-supervised anomaly detection tasks. organ_classification_2: Contains 10 sub-folders representing the 10 different organs, with a total of 1,293 images. Patient_Wise: This folder contains 170 patient images, their diagnosis as metadata in an xlsx file and a text file, Update Version 01_USG.txt.

All images were anonymized and de-identified before inclusion in this dataset, ensuring patient privacy and compliance with ethical research standards.

Improving engagement through readers\u27 theater: A systematic literature review and teacher process portfolio with program proposal
This project investigated the impact of Readers’ Theater on elementary students’ attitudes toward reading, the teacher’s perception of effectiveness of Readers’ Theater as a tool to improve reading comprehension, and students’ test-related anxiety, within the context of the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) mandated by the Literacy-Based Promotion Act. While existing literature has highlighted Readers’ Theater as an effective instructional strategy that engages reluctant readers and enhances both reading fluency and comprehension through repeated, performance-based readings, gaps in current research exist regarding Readers’ Theater effectiveness as an instructional strategy to mitigate reading- and test-anxiety. Through research questions focused on how Readers’ Theater influences student attitudes, teachers’ perceptions of its effectiveness in developing reading fluency, and its impact on students’ anxiety levels related to reading activities and high-stakes testing, this project aimed to address the issue of low engagement by conducting a Systematic Literature Review. As a supplemental component, the teacher-researcher also implemented a Readers’ Theater routine in her classroom while simultaneously maintaining a Reflective Journal. The final component of this project combined an innovative intervention designed to support third grade students through Readers’ Theater with a qualitative research study exploring its effectiveness as a tool to mitigate test anxiety and fill the gap in the literature identified in the Systematic Literature Review. Pekrun’s Control-Value theory of Achievement Emotions was used as the theoretical framework of all three components of this project. The Systematic Literature Review was conducting using the structured process described by Machi and McEvoy. The PAUSE method (Perceive, Audit, Understand, Substitute, Edify) was used for analysis, the teacher’s observations captured in the reflective journal. Findings suggest that RT not only enhances fluency and comprehension but also fosters greater confidence and enjoyment in reading, which may reduce anxiety associated with standardized assessments. Based on these outcomes, the researcher designed a year-long RT program for third grade, aiming to extend research on the emotional and academic impacts of RT in literacy instruction
Towards applying artificial intelligence to solve NP-complete problems using quantum computing
This dissertation explores the methodology for more thoroughly entangling artificial intelligence and quantum computing. This is explored through a background search of problems solved using Grover’s quantum algorithm, a new quantum protein folding and drug discovery algorithm, using Grover’s algorithm to train quantum artificial neural networks, using quantum artificial neural networks for reinforcement learning, mapping classical assembly instructions to quantum circuits to make quantum programming easier, and using prompt engineering to get a classical artificial intelligence agent to solve an NP-Complete problem using a Grover’s algorithm. This method not only simplifies the creation of algorithms but also opens new avenues in quantum algorithm design. The findings contribute to the entanglement of classical and quantum computing and AI-enhanced quantum computing, thereby advancing the field of quantum information science
