Direct taxation, the British economy, and the transformation of the British fiscal state, 1783-1865
My dissertation titled Direct Taxation, the British Economy, and the Transformation of the British Fiscal State, 1783-1865 aims to highlight the important role that the income tax played in cultivating and maintaining the Victorian “laissez-faire” state. I argue that it did so by providing the funds necessary to end much of the protectionism left from the mercantilist state, stimulating demand, stabilizing currency and banking, and promoting domestic consumption. My argument relies on a close examination of how this strategic use of taxation stemmed from not just experience and results but from ideas posed by thinkers like Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo
Evaluation of furrow-irrigation and agronomic management in Mississippi rice (Oryza sativa L.)
A new non-transgenic rice has been developed called ROXY, which is resistant to formulations of oxyfluorfen. Utilizing the ROXY rice production system in a furrow-irrigated system could help combat troublesome terrestrial weeds and be a viable option for producers. To evaluate the performance of oxyfluorfen in furrow-irrigated ROXY rice production system, two concurrent field studies were conducted at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS, from 2022 to 2024. The first study evaluated residual grass and broadleaf weed control with oxyfluorfen applied delayed-preemergence (DPRE). Factor A was oxyfluorfen rates of 0, 700, and 981 g ai ha-1. Factor B was herbicide mixture and included no mixture, clomazone at 560 g ai ha-1, saflufenacil at 50 g ai ha-1, and halosulfuron-methyl plus prosulfuron at 83 g ai ha-1. The second study evaluated residual grass and broadleaf weed control with oxyfluorfen in a full-season herbicide program for furrow-irrigated rice. Factor A was DPRE treatment and included no DPRE treatment, oxyfluorfen at 1,121 g ha-1, oxyfluorfen 1,121 g ha-1 plus clomazone at 560 g ha-1, and clomazone at 560 g ha-1 plus saflufenacil at 50 g ha-1. Factor B was early postemergence (EPOST) treatment and included no EPOST, and propanil plus thiobencarb at 6,728 g ai ha-1 applied at the two- to three-leaf rice stage. Factor C was late postemergence (LPOST) and included no LPOST, and quinclorac at 421 g ai ha-1 plus halosulfuron plus prosulfuron at 83 g ha-1 plus petroleum oil surfactant at 1% (v/v) at the four-leaf to one-tiller rice stage. When oxyfluorfen was mixed with clomazone, saflufenacil, or halosulfuron plus prosulfuron, barnyardgrass control was ≥ 78%. Oxyfluorfen at 981 g ha alone resulted in greater barnyardgrass and Palmer amaranth control 35 DAA than oxyfluorfen at 700 g ha. In the second study, barnyardgrass control 42 DAA never exceeded 89%. Oxyfluorfen, oxyfluorfen plus clomazone, and clomazone plus saflufenacil DPRE alone all provided comparable Palmer amaranth control 42 DAA. Oxyfluorfen-tolerant rice represents a viable option to be used in furrow-irrigated rice when combined with overlapping residual herbicides but will not be able to provide adequate control alone
My grandparents raised me: The role of formative individual and family experiences in predicting emerging adult substance use, attachment, and mental health outcomes
Individuals raised in a grandfamily, or family structure in which a grandparent raises their grandchildren, experience higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), insecure attachment, and negative mental health outcomes during childhood. Literature on outcomes of these individuals across the lifespan is extremely limited, however, and it is unclear how formative individual and family experiences of being raised by grandparents carry into emerging adulthood (e.g., 18 to 25-years-old). Emerging adulthood is a developmental stage marked by significant instability and unpredictability that is linked with increased vulnerability to mental health concerns and substance use. It has been identified as an important developmental stage for targeted substance use and mental health interventions. The “self-medication” hypothesis of substance use indicates that individuals engage in substance use due to a lack of secure attachment strategies in an attempt to “numb” the negative affect. Given that individuals raised by grandparents are more likely to have insecure attachment and decreased mental health, it is imperative to elucidate intersections between the unique factors of this population and known risk factors of emerging adulthood. A sample of 535 emerging adults from a large southern university completed online questionnaires on childhood factors including their family system and ACEs, as well as current attachment, mental health, and substance use patterns in emerging adulthood. Findings of the study suggest that ACEs are a significant predictor of insecure attachment, substance use and all mental health outcomes. Once history of ACEs was statistically controlled, substance use was no longer an explanatory variable between insecure attachment and mental health outcomes, which does not support the self-medication hypothesis. Further, there were unique group differences for those raised by grandparents which suggest they experience higher rates of mental health symptoms when they have a preoccupied or unresolved attachment pattern. Clinical implications include incorporating an ACEs screen into intake sessions, as well as gaining competency in working with grandfamilies through a trauma informed approach
Timber price trends, transmission, and the impact on loblolly pine plantation management in the United States South.
This study analyzed the impact of pine timber price trends on optimal rotation age and price transmission relationship in the timber market in the US South. Price trends and volatilities were incorporated into discounted cash flow analyses to determine stochastic optimal rotation age. The results revealed that negative price trends reduced the optimal rotation age and maximum land expectation values compared with the base case of the Faustmann model\u27s constant timber prices. Also, I performed a vertical price transmission study for the US South pine timber market using a Smooth Transition Autoregressive (STAR) model. Price transmission was linear in the lower regime for the lumber-log and lumber-stumpage price ratio but non-linear in the higher regime. Asymmetric price transmission was observed in both price ratios, indicating inefficient market operations. These insights can help landowners, investors, loggers, and forest product industry stakeholders make better informed decisions in the timber market sector
Site formation processes and lithic analysis of the Swag site (38AL137)
Archaeologists working in the American Southeast have limited ability to contribute to the debates regarding the human colonization of the Americas because relatively undisturbed, well stratified, Paleoindian sites with datable material are rare (Miller 2016:712). The archaeological sites in the Allendale-Briar Creek Paleoindian quarry complex along the Savannah River near Martin, SC have produced sites that contain datable archaeological deposits (Anderson et al. 2016; Waters et al. 2009). One such site, the Swag Site, located in Allendale County, South Carolina, is within the Allendale-Briar Creek Paleoindian quarry complex (Goodyear 2018; Goodyear and Charles 1984; Miller et al. 2016; Oscarson et al. 2017). I analyzed archaeological materials from the Swag site and have determined that there is no significant post-depositional horizontal and/or vertical movement of the lithic assemblage
