    Get PDF
The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between organizational support perceptions and personal growth initiative levels of the faculty members working in Turkey and to examine the effect of self-efficacy perceptions in this relationship. The study was designed as a relational survey model. 346 faculty members from public universities in Turkey comprised the participants. The data was collected with General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Perceived Organizational Support Scale (POSS), Personal Growth Initiative Scale-II (PGIS-II). Descriptive analyses and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to examine the structural relations among the variables. It was observed that faculty members’ organizational support perceptions had a significant direct effect on their personal growth initiative levels; organizational support perceptions had a significant effect on general self-efficacy beliefs; and the effect of general self-efficacy beliefs on personal growth initiative levels was significant. It was evidenced that faculty members’ self-efficacy beliefs fully mediated the relationship between perceived organizational support and personal growth initiative levels. These results are in line with the principles of Organizational Support Theory and Social Cognitive Theory. More research explaining the effect of organizational factors on self-efficacy and personal growth initiative is needed

    Get PDF
Past research has indicated the vital role of affective factors in mathematics learning. This action research study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an action plan, which was implemented to foster students’ positive affective entry characteristics towards mathematics specifically by fixing the deficiencies in prior learning and promoting the allocation of time to study. Thirteen students attending a secondary school participated in the study over a 12-week period. We collected both quantitative and qualitative data through the Affective Entry Characteristics Scale for Mathematics, the Attitude Observation Form towards Mathematics, the research diary, and indirect observation of use traces on student assignments. First of all, the analysis of these data sources confirmed that there was substantial improvement in the students’ affective entry characteristics, indicating the effectiveness of our implementation. On the other hand, the qualitative data analysis of the diary and student assignments also revealed that this effect was not long-lasting for students who lived in a disadvantaged family/home environment. In other words, remedying the deficiencies in prior learning and promoting the allocation of time to study alone were not sufficient for these students. As a result, we came to the conclusion in the study that non-modifiable variables (such as family-home environment) is as important as or even more important than modifiable ones in the development of positive affective entry characteristics towards mathematics

This research attempts to reveal the views of the primary school teachers, having Syrian students in their class, on these students’ Turkish and mathematics skills and the challenges they have confronted in the classroom. The research used a mixed research method and 347 primary school teachers who met the criterion of having Syrian students in their classes participated in the research. Quantitative data were gathered through a five-point Likert type questionnaire consisting of 27 questions, and qualitative data were collected with eight open-ended questions. Descriptive statistical methods were used during quantitative data analysis and descriptive analysis for qualitative data. The research findings revealed that Syrian students' reading, reading comprehension and problem solving skills were not sufficiently developed due to the lack of speaking Turkish. In the same vein, there were communication problems with students and parents due to the language barrier which affects Syrian students' choice of friends and their success in classes. Another research finding suggested that Syrian students were at a satisfactory level in operational skills that do not require verbal knowledge, especially in mathematics lesson. In addition, the parents were identified to be indifferent to the students' lessons and they did not help with their homework. The participants’ common view was that Syrian students should receive Turkish education in separate classes (preparatory class) in order to solve the language problem before schooling

It is highly important that teachers have the necessary professional knowledge, skills and attitudes for the efficiency of the teaching and learning process, which has an important role in gaining the required qualifications to individuals. One of the educational platforms that can be used for teachers to develop both their personal and professional skills is the eTwinning platform. It offers opportunities for both teachers and students. Literature review has shown that the number of researches on eTwinning, which is used by more and more teachers in Turkey, is insufficient in number. The participants of this research, which aims to compare mataphors created by teachers in Turkey and abroad, consist of 224 teachers. In the study, the content analysis method has been adopted and, the data have been collected thorugh a fixed form questionnaire. According to the results of the research, it has been found out that eTwinning projects have mostly been carried out by teachers working at primary schools. The metaphors produced by teachers for eTwinning projects have been grouped under 8 different categories. Lastly, teachers also use various tools while carrying out their project

There is no doubt that Covid -19 has affected the whole world in every aspect of life. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between Covid-19 phobia and life satisfaction levels of students participating in special talent entrance exams and their views according to some demographic variables. The sample of the study consists of 320 participants who took the special talent exam from the departments of physical education and sports teaching and coaching education at the University of Sutcü İmam. The research is a quantitative study and it was carried out in relational scanning model. Data were collected in August-September 2020. In the analysis of data Jamovi 1.6.12 statistical software program was used. As a result of the research; Covid-19 phobia and life satisfaction level arithmetic mean scores of the participants were determined to be in the middle score range. In normal circumstances, it was determined that the fear of COVID-19 had a negative effect on the participants, while life satisfaction is expected to be high due to the athletic and young age of the participants. In terms of demographic variables, significant differences were found in Covid-19 Phobia Scale' and 'Life Satisfaction Scale' scores. In correlation and regression analyses, it was concluded that psychological, somatic, social and economic variables, which are independent variables, showed a negative low-level significant relationship with the life satisfaction of students, and they were also a significant predictor on life satisfaction. The results obtained from this study are predicted to shed light on the psychological, social, economic and similar effects of Covid-19 fear on people and provide significant contributions to finding solutions on these issue

    Get PDF
A subject worth examining was the interdisciplinary approach’s planning and application of two distinct disciplines around a theme, as well as investigating the value achievement inclinations of students who participated in the interdisciplinary approach. In this context, the problem sentence of the research is that: Does integrated mathematics and life sciences teaching have an effect on primary school 3rd-grade students’ achievement of honesty, respect, love, and helpfulness values?”. In the research, a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group which was designed under the theme of “tolerance,” was used to determine the effect of teaching integrated Mathematics and Life Sciences lessons in the third grade of primary school on students’ honesty, respect, love, and helpfulness value tendencies As the data collection tools of the research, the “Honesty Value achievement Scale,” “Love achievement Scale,” “Respect achievement Scale,” and “Helpfulness achievement Scale” were applied to the students in the sample. This research was conducted in three stages: preliminary preparations before application, integration of disciplines, lesson plan preparation, and actual application. There was a significant difference in favor of the experimental group between the primary school third-grade students in the experimental group, who were taught integrated mathematics and life sciences, compared to the control group students, who were taught according to the Ministry of National Education-approved course and workbook. In addition, it was concluded that there was a significant difference in favor of the posttest between the pretest-posttest scores of the honesty, respect, love, and helpfulness values belonging to the students in the experimental group in which integrated mathematics and life sciences were taught

On the effectiveness and limitations of captioning in L2 listening

    Get PDF
Listening is often perceived to be the most challenging skill by second/foreign language (L2) learners. Due to its real-time nature, L2 listeners experience several comprehension problems related to the processing of aural input. To scaffold L2 listening, captioning is commonly used since the dual coding of aural and written stimuli is expected to make L2 input more comprehensible leading to more in-depth processing. However, a survey of the extant literature precludes us from drawing firm conclusions about the effectiveness of captioning since in some circumstances captions were found to have no significant effect on listening comprehension. So, the question of whether captions function as a comprehension aid in L2 listening remains inconclusive. Hence, adopting a narrative literature review methodology, the present study aims to contribute to this inconsistent research area by clarifying some of these issues answering the following questions: (1) Is captioning really effective in L2 listening?, (2) Does captioning always work for L2 listening?, and (3) Why is research on captioning in L2 listening still inconclusive?  Based on the insights gained, it is concluded that the mere presence of captions does not necessarily lead to improved comprehension. Captioning effectiveness is influenced by learner, material, measurement, task, and L1/L2 characteristics. Implications arising are discussed
