The study used a sequential mixed method design where qualitative and quantitative designs were combined in data collection. For quantitative data, questionnaires were administered. Analyses and presentations were done in the form of tables and texts. The study analysed the contents of these newspapers for qualitative data. Systematic Random sampling procedure was used to reach respondents, while a purposive sampling procedure was used to pick the required 208-weekend newspapers for 12 months for content analysis. The study was conducted in Embakasi East Sub County, Nairobi County, with 48 983 households. The research used Yamane’s formula to determine the sample size of 399 households. The study\u27s key finding was that print media inform and educate residents of Embakasi East Sub County in Nairobi County about county governments\u27 functions. The study is significant as it can promote Sustainable Development Goals’ tenet of peace, justice, and establishment of strong institutions.
Contemporary use of proverbs in Akan news broadcast
Proverb is a universal phenomenon which plays very significant roles in language use and communication. The Igbo of Nigeria says: “Proverb is the palm oil with which words are eaten”, meaning without the ornament of proverbs, words are hard to swallow. Akan people of Ghana also believe that: If you speak without proverbs, your speech is not complete in sweetness. Proverbs have been used extensively in the media since the establishment of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in 1954. Therefore, this paper analyses the use of proverbs in radio and television news broadcasts in Akan. Four radio stations and three Television stations were selected for the study. Recordings of 6:00 a.m, 12:00 and 6:00 p.m. News from the four Radio stations and evening News from the three Television stations constituted the data for the study. After listening to the recordings, follow-up interviews were conducted. The study used an integrated approach for data analysis. Critical Discourse Analysis and Politeness Theory are the theoretical frameworks adopted for this ethnographic discussion. Both theories emphasize that in all speech or communication acts; one must consider the text, cultural context, and the setting in which expressions or certain literary devices are used. Analysis of the data indicates that Newscasters/readers in the selected stations use proverbs in their News items. It was further found out that proverbs used in this context are of four categories – original, modified, embellished, and newly coined proverbs. In each case, the proverbs are either used appropriately or otherwise

Agentive noun formation strategies in Tiv language
The study was designed to prove that agentive nouns are found in Tiv just like in any other language in consonance with the claims of Universal Grammar Theory. The study aimed at identifying the agentive noun formation strategies in Tiv, which indicate what a person does as a job, what they do habitually or at a particular time, and their nationality or origin. The researchers used their intuitive knowledge of Tiv to collect data for the study. Lexical items which mark the doer of an activity or action and the professional and nationality status of a person were collected and analysed. The study discovered that the formation of agentive nouns in Tiv is done by compounding rather than prefixation since or ‘person/man’ and kwase ‘woman’ are independent words, which are attached to other nouns, progressive forms, and adjectives to derive agentive nouns in the language
Contemporary globalization, the social sciences and the challenge of scholarship in the emerging world regions
This contribution interrogates contemporary globalization, the social sciences and the challenge of scholarship in the emerging world regions. It identifies contemporary globalization as a synonym for the third wave of globalization, commencing post World War II, with a large American globalism measure. It is accepted in the paper that “any discipline or branch of science that deals with human behaviour in its social and cultural aspects” is classifiable as a social science. In this work, a reference to social science scholarship is specifically to Africa, Asia, Latin American, and the Middle Eastern nations in the emerging world regions. The paper\u27s thesis is on the global need for new interdependencies and sensitivities in social science scholarship under contemporary globalization
Sports-media reports as correlates of perceived performance among female track and field athletes in Ibadan metropolis
Female athletes have been known to complain about sexism (gender bias and sexist comments by the sports-media) opining that it impacts negatively on their perception of performance. This research investigated the impact of sports-media narratives (positive or negative) on female track and field athletes\u27 perceived performance in the Ibadan metropolis. A survey research design was used. It was anchored on the Hypodermic Needle Theory and Media Agenda Setting Theory, which stresses audience weakness and malleability in the face of the deliberate media onslaught. Three (3) Female Athletic Clubs were conveniently selected and the 120 female athletes purposively sampled for the study. Author-developed and validated Female Athletes Sports-media Response Questionnaire (FASRQ) with (r=86) was the instrument for data collection. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results indicated positive significant relationship between positive sports-media narrative and perceived performance among female track and field athletes in Ibadan metropolis (r = .785**, N= 117, p < .05) and positive significant relationship between negative sports-media narrative and perceived performance among female track and field athletes in Ibadan metropolis (r = .638**, N= 117, P < .05). It was recommended that sports-media should endeavor to balance their reportage, be neutral and objective, and portray a good image of female track and field athletes in their narratives
Flood disaster and national security: A criminologist`s exploration of Lagos metropolis, Nigeria
The global disaster trends are worrisome to all stakeholders. The ugly consequences of flood disasters include loss of lives and property, disruption of economic activities, creating insecurity like theft, robbery, and many more. The consequence also puts pressure on the government to spend limited resources on rehabilitation and compensation of flood victims. Hence, this paper addresses flood-disaster preparedness and flood control in Nigeria through the criminological exploration of Lagos metropolis. The study applied exploratory and descriptive methods and relied on data generated through content analysis of books, journals, and online materials. This paper adopted the social control theory by Hirsch and broken window theory by George Kelly. The finding showed that people lack preparedness for the disaster events; they break urban master plans and structures to obstruct to flood. The anti-social attitude like indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes into drainages and carnal and weak enforcement of environmental laws. Also, undue cutting down of trees, lack of environmental policy and lack of political will to implement the existing ones, poor attitude to social and environmental policies are among the factors that are responsible for poor preparedness for flood disaster in Lagos Metropolis. The paper recommends effective public enlightenment, public advocacy on environmental safety and health security, rigorous enforcement of environmental laws, and an urban renewal scheme. This paper will benefit the ministries of environment and physical planning, the state, and the federal emergency agencies, non-governmental agencies, and researchers in the security and emergency studies
Power and regional security: A comparative discourse on ECOWAS and SADC
The paper discussed the power indices in the ECOWAS and the SADC, which accounted for their timeous response to security threats and violent outbursts in their respective regions. ECOWAS is seen as a historical model of sub-regional integration and human security organisation, given its engagement in several conflicts arising from its weak states, while SADC has focused on containing threats emerging from the relics of settler colonialism with periodic convulsion in its domain. The study identifies the indices of power within these two regions and their nexus to achieve regional security goals. It adopted a case study research design and relied on data from secondary sources, which were presented qualitatively and analysed with content analysis technique. It made a discourse on the uniformity and differences between power indices in ECOWAS and SADC and concluded that strengthening of existing institutions is imperative. Besides, revolutions in the industrial and technological capacities of the sub-regions are necessary for the achievement of set regional security goals
Social media age: Where is the spirit of Ubuntu in the educational system?
Ubuntu promotes the caring spirit of humanity. In the presence of Ubuntu, the growing rate of teachers\u27 absenteeism in their duty posts is alarming across schools and subject lines. Social media platforms promote continuous presence and limiting physical presence. At the same time, Ubuntu promotes caring for one another irrespective of gender, age, race, status, background, and many more. Notwithstanding the benefits attached to African philosophy, Ubuntu, and social media, teachers\u27 presence in schools keeps dropping physically and virtually. This study used secondary data in seeking to understand how African philosophy, Ubuntu, and social media can be applied in closing or eliminating the growing teacher absenteeism in schools in this social media age
Female student teachers’ political participation in a Ghanaian College of Education; a Myth or Reality
All over the world, women are underrepresented at socio-political levels. This study investigated the political interest and engagement of female students of the Seventh-Day Adventist College of Education, and the rationale for their low political engagement. The study adopted the transformative philosophical worldview with quantitative backing. Employing stratified and convenience sampling approaches, the study considered 405 female student teachers. Data from questionnaires were analysed descriptively and inferentially with means, standard deviation, multiple linear regression, and Pearson two-tailed correlation using SPSS V.20 and are presented in tables. The study found that female student teachers moderately involve themselves in politics-related issues and activities. The study also found that the society around student teachers is responsible for their lower political engagement. Demographic characteristics of female student teachers were found to be significant predictors of their political engagement. The study found a statistically inversed relationship between female student teachers’ political engagement index and both their academic performance and their level in college. The study also found that with higher Commutative Grade Point Average (CGPA), there is a significant chance that female student teachers will maintain their political interest as they progress to advanced levels in the College. It has been recommended that society should rethink gender roles and as such, strengthen women empowerment programmes to groom women and build their competence and interests in the field of politics
