Get PDFThe COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives, our status, our situations, and other aspects of our daily lives. Education is still persistent and determined to fulfill their duties and responsibilities to sustain the needs of the learners and provide a productive individual. Even if this pandemic strikes our lives, this will not matter because giving education and teaching the students matters most. The point of this paper is to trace the journey of the great survivors, who represent the students who face a tough battle amidst this pandemic and can continue dreaming and pursuing their goals in life. This was a tough battle for every one of us. This article is also written to discuss the realistic circumstances encountered by a student and a future educator in living through the sudden educational changes in the school system at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The article highlights the identification and specification of (a) the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education and students’ scholarly endeavors; (b) the challenges faced by students and educators; and (c) the strategies they utilize to adapt, adjust, and cope with the current changes happening in society and the educational system due to the abrupt emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reducing cost and ensuring environmental sustainability: Palm kernel expeller as an alternative sculpture material for casting in Ghana
Get PDFThe materials for sculpture in Ghana have always been clay, wood, cement, resin, and silicon. These materials have their limitations. Also, some students do not have the financial strength to purchase them because they are expensive. This situation slows down the pace in the teaching and learning of practical activities in the Sculpture discipline in most Ghanaian educational institutions. Owing to this, the researchers explored the possibility of experimenting with local materials in the home regions of students which could have otherwise been a nuisance in the environment as alternative sculptural materials. The researchers adopted the Double Helix of Praxis Exegesis Model, which is an arts-based method undergird in the eco-innovation theory to investigate the possibility of using palm kernel which is abundant in the Anloga Sobolo community, Kumasi, Ghana as an alternative material for modeling, casting, and carving. The palm kernel expellers were prepared by collecting the kernel, cracking, firing, milling, and cooking to extract the oil, and then the expeller. The palm kernel expellers were mixed with selected binders to produce aesthetically pleasing modeled, cast, and carved works. Findings revealed that palm kernel expeller is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative material for sculpture. The study contends that teachers and students in the sculpture discipline in the various Senior High and tertiary educational institutions in Ghana should constantly explore waste local materials as alternative materials for practical activities in sculpture to reduce cost and to serve as a tool for ensuring environmental sustainability
Higher education’s outcomes-based education: Bane or boon?
Get PDFOutcomes-Based Education (OBE) encompasses the learning, awareness, abilities, and viewpoints that students should learn to attain their successful and satisfying life cycles as human beings, members of society, and at employment. However, OBE has recently become a topic of debate and controversy. Some critics consider this educational approach ineffective, while others see it as solution to a country\u27s educational problems. In this context, it is important to consider the nature of outcomes-based education and the challenges that come with its implementation in the Philippines. Rather than criticizing the notions associated with it, this paper focuses on such a reflection. The paper introduces several important notions (both good and bad) in Outcomes-Based Education and recommends methods in which these concepts may perhaps be studied further. This paper is not purposed to negate the system nor to agree with the sets of standards embedded in this kind of system in Philippine education but to establish awareness on how this system works. But if OBE will be a miracle cure in the Philippines (or a plague to the country), Filipinos must play their part in order to achieve the ideal goals since they are the ones who are greatly affected either way

The purpose of the study was to investigate how knowledge management could serve as a tool for mentoring business educators in Nigerian universities. This is because, knowledge management has become a catchphrase in most universities in recent times. This is occasioned by the evolving nature of institutional value from physical assets (tangible) to knowledge assets (intangible). Knowledge management has thus, taken a centre stage institution’s ability to remain both relevant and competitive in the global scheme of things. Organizational knowledge includes both tacit and explicit knowledge.Tacit is the one an individual possesses about a product, system, and process; while explicit knowledge is codified in manuals, databases and information systems.The challenge of many institutions is how to manage both tacit and explicit knowledge and make sure that they are shared to other colleagues who may see it useful both in the present and future job requirements. The implication of this is that the exit of the senior and experienced business educators due to retirements or other extraneous factors will not create loss of memory that may affect university effectiveness and productivity. Business educators in Nigerian universities therefore need to appreciate the indispensable nature of knowledge management and then develop a mechanism such as mentoring to tap into the collective intelligence, skills and expertise of senior and experienced staff in order to create a greater knowledge base. It is against this background that this paper examines problems plaguing Nigerian universities, knowledge management, ways universities can influence it, the need for knowledge management in Nigerian universities, mentoring in universities, benefits of mentoring and KM as a strategy for mentoring in Nigerian universities. They arrived at logical conclusions and offers key recommendations
Phonological Effects and Functions of English Loan-words on the Tiv Grammar
Get PDFThere is no human language that is devoid of borrowing loan-words from a parent language to its own (recipient) language. When loan-words are injected into a recipient language, there are certain phonological effects that such words have on the grammar of such a language. This paper critically discusses the phonological implications and functions of English loan-words on Tiv the grammar. The objectives of this paper are to: classify phonological implications of English loan-words on the grammar of Tiv language; discuss the implications of English loan-words on Tiv grammar; explore the phonological functions of English loan-words; and, state reasons that necessitate borrowing of loan-words. The author used primary and secondary sources. The researcher used participant-observer technique as his primary source and documentary sources were used. It has been found out that most English loan-words have no substitutes in Tiv; loan-words have expanded the vocabulary of the Tiv grammar; the original syllabic structure of most loan-words changed from close to open syllables; and epenthetic letters are added to break consonant clusters, for plurality and as a hiatus repairing strategy. It has been recommended that papers should be churned out in the areas of historical, comparative and contact linguistics. Lecturers should give assignments or project topics on phonologically related processes
