    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the security challenges in society, and the potential for film to address them as evidenced by the critically acclaimed movie, Issakaba. Specifically, it explores the lead actor, Sam Dede\u27s performance and how it influenced the audience\u27s understanding of security threats. The paper analyses the ethical questions raised by such a film, looking at its implications in terms of our contemporary understanding of the roles of government and citizens when it comes to security. The paper, which is anchored on the cultivation theory, will also examines the state of insecurity in Nigeria, and how films can be used in addressing security challenges in society. Finally, the paper discusses the potential for the messages contained in the selected movie to have a larger cultural impact, and the implications of such messages for our global society. Thus, the paper will do a critical examination of the film, Issakaba, and its message in terms of security and its consequences. The conclusion is that Issakaba communicated a message of insecurity, and how it was addressed. It is therefore recommended that the government should adopt a ‘refined’ Issakaba Boys approach to tackle the insecurity in the country. However, when deciding to adopt the option of a vigilante force to redress the insecurity in the society, abinitio, the government should put in place measures to avert and curb misuse of power by the recruits into the outfit

The primary objective of this research is to emphasize how social prejudice, which has not received enough attention, plays a role in the social exclusion of LGBTQI people. The researchers demonstrated that this issue also affects the sexual minority in society. This is a pressing topic that has to be discussed. Thus, it must be handled as well. The chief goal of this research study is to explicitly detail the language paradigm of social bias in the LGBTQI community. Two hundred survey participants who gave enthusiastic responses to the questionnaires were chosen. According to the information provided by the respondents, the study\u27s findings cannot necessarily be generalized to students who do not identify as LGBTQI or are not enrolled at UM Tagum College. Queer Theory, developed in 1991 by Italian American feminist theorist Teresa de Laurentiis, serves as the theoretical foundation for this work. Because many people tend to exclude LGBTQI people from society due to their sexuality, romantic relationships, and lifestyle preferences, this theory was created

A critical study of ideologies in selected Boko Haram videos

    Get PDF
Boko Haram insurgency has threatened the existence of Nigeria as the group has wrecked serious havoc on different parts of the country. This group has constantly claimed to stand against some issues, ideas, people, doctrines, and systems. They have demonstrated this in their activities. To further their engagements, they periodically release videos to the public and these videos communicate layers of meaning and ideologies. This study, therefore, highlights and discusses the ideologies inherent in Boko Haram Video. A total of five videos were selected from the Sahara Reporters TV, Premium Times, and legit.ng using a purposive sampling technique. The study adopted Fairclough’s Three Dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis as its theoretical leaning. Findings revealed that Boko Haram used both verbal and nonverbal semiotic resources in conveying their ideologies.  Words like “infidels, tyrants, idiots, pagans and thieves” are used by Abubakar Shekau to show the negative out-group polarity of others while discourse elements like “we follow Allah, we obey Qur’an” are used to show positive in-group polarity. Various shots and expressions convey Boko Haram ideologies including monotheism, absolutism, anti-westernism, and masculinism. The study concludes that the semiotic resources used in Boko Haram videos covertly convey ideologies, power, (mis)representation and hegemony.  Therefore, it is cogent that Nigeria’s federal government and the Nigerian military pay attention to the understanding of the operational ideologies of Boko Haram for effective deradicalisation of the sect and successful eradication of Boko Haram insurgency

The comprehension level of Filipino learners has been a challenge that educators have tried to address. Many intervention programs have been initiated to improve the comprehension level of the learners in order to close gaps and provide adjustments to various educational methods. As a result, it is critical to investigate and develop the various types of intelligence, particularly among learners\u27 dominant intelligences. In this context, the study sought to investigate the dominant intelligences and comprehension skills of Grade III students in a Philippine elementary school. The study\u27s findings serve as the foundation for the development of an English instructional plan. The study used a mixed method of research and was carried out in five elementary schools in Tacurong City Division. Using cluster sampling, 79 Grade III students were randomly selected to participate in the Multiple Intelligence Test and the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory Manual Assessment (Phil-IRI). It was then triangulated using an in-depth interview and a focus group discussion with five school principals and five teachers. The study\u27s findings revealed that, of the seven multiple intelligences tested, Interpersonal intelligence was the most dominant multiple intelligence in the five respondent schools. Furthermore, in relation to the level of comprehension of the learners, a significant number of them are frustrated. Furthermore, the correlation shows that there is no significant relationship between their multiple intelligences and their comprehension skills

Economic growth and external debt stock have been on a steady increase. But in some countries, output growth does not reflect similar growth patterns with external debt stock, which contradicts theoretical literature. Hence, this research investigates the role of institutional quality on external debt and sectoral growth relationship across 17 countries between 2005 and 2018. The Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) technique was used to estimate the longrun relationship after ascertaining the stationarity and cointegration condition of the data series. The findings reported that external debt on average exerts a significant positive effect on the agricultural and industrial sectors, while exerting a negative impact on the service sector. The findings further revealed that institutional quality (government effectiveness, voice of accountability, control of corruption, regulatory quality, rule of law and political stability) has detrimental effects on the agricultural sector. In the service sector, some of the institutional quality variables show positive impacts on the sectoral growth, however, most of them (government effectiveness, voice of accountability, control of corruption and political stability) had detrimental impact on the growth of the sector. In the industrial sector, institutional quality have a more detrimental effect on sectoral output, suggesting that poor institutional quality, as measured by these variables, constrains economic activities and hampers the growth of these sectors. The study recommended institutional reforms that will ensure both effective and transparent use of resources and improved accountability in these sectors

Abstract: Despite being the second most spoken foreign language in Burundi, Kiswahili is still given little attention compared to French and English. This study therefore aimed to investigate the spread of Kiswahili in Burundi by highlighting the challenges and factors that led to its spread in the country. Primary and secondary data were used in this study where primary data were collected through interviews. In addition, a population of 41 respondents was made up of Kiswahili teachers at universities and residents of the provinces of Rumonge, Makamba, Muyinga and the economic city of Bujumbura. This study which was conducted in Burundi revealed that Kiswahili spread in Burundi thanks to religion, immigration, the arrival of Arabs, colonialism, regional cooperation, war, business, education, marriage, border interactions and media. Although Kiswahili is taught from primary school to universities and the presence of associations to promote it, this study revealed that the history of Burundi, shortage of teachers and books, misconceptions, language policy and social classes are among the challenges that hinder the rapid development of the language. This study concluded by recommending the wide use of the language in different sectors and carrying out researches on the current status of Kiswahili in Burundi.
