    Balsa Wood Bridge

    When building a bridge, there is a lot of criteria that need to be met so it can be functional. These criteria for this balsa bridge competition are what the bridge is made out of and can only weigh so much, the bridge must hold a certain amount of weight and not fail due to it, must allow a “vehicle” to go through the bridge and under it. For this bridge, the only material that can be used is balsa wood and any glue. With this, the strength of the material can be found and multiple calculations can be used to see if the balsa wood can hold the minimum weight through the structure design. The design was made through green sheets and using MDSolids a simple truss system can hold the weight being applied in addition, the middle section of the bridge needed to reach 140mm. By doing the calculations for the lifting mechanism, it will show what force is needed to lift the bridge and how long does it do this action in. The balsa wood bridge was able to hold the 20kg of weight that it was required while only weighing 73g out of the 85g. with the structure, it had a gap of 40mm to allow the 32mm wide block through with ease. Finally, it was able to rise to the height of 140mm in the 60-second time frame and only took 55 seconds to do so

    RC Baja - Drivetrain and Chassis

    The annual RC Baja competition which is held at Central Washington University during the third week of April, showcases the different remote-control vehicles built by the student teams and put the vehicles in series of different challenges such as the sprint, slalom, and motocross. The objective of the senior project is to design, manufacture, and test mainly a drivetrain system as well as a chassis. The drivetrain system provides power for the driving force and the chassis provides housing for the different components of the vehicle. The process began with setting requirements for the vehicle that was used to determine the different analysis needed to achieve those requirements. Principles of kinematics were used for determining the maximum speed of the vehicle, strength of materials was used for determining the material stress and strength; lastly, mechanical design was used for designing the drivetrain. The series of different analysis was followed by a series of CAD modeled parts and assemblies on Solidworks that were manufactured by the student team. Therefore, the process ended with the construction of the drivetrain and chassis that were manufactured using machining, 3D printing, and outsourcing parts. As a result, the drivetrain system achieved success in providing the driving force of the vehicle that reached a maximum speed of 56 miles per hour. In addition, the chassis achieved success in providing housings for the drivetrain, suspension, and steering sub-assemblies while weighing under 8 pounds. Therefore, the student team successfully built a functioning RC vehicle

    RC Baja Suspension and Steering

    The RC Baja team set out to engineer and construct a working remote-control device that can compete in the ASME Baja Competition. The students have a focus on either suspension and steering or drivetrain and chassis. This report is centered on the suspension and steering. First, multiple analyses were completed using engineering methods such as mechanical design, statics, strengths of materials, and dynamics for parts of the device. The calculations found in the analysis are then used to create designs for the parts so that they will meet the requirements and be successful in the competition. After the parts are designed, they are then constructed using multiple methods of manufacturing such as machining, 3D printing, or a type of outsourcing. The parts are then assembled into a working device. The device is then tested to those set requirements and finally, compete against the other devices in the competition. The device withstood the testing with having under a 7.62 mm deflection on the lower control arms with a static loading of 9.1 kg. The suspension was able to travel well over 60 mm, the device had the ability to corner at 5 m/s without rolling, and the device was able withstand 3 vertical drop tests from a height of 650 mm. The device also placed in the top 5 in each discipline in the ASME competition

    R/C Baja

    The ASME RC Baja competition derives a need for an RC car capable of performing at a competitive level in Slalom, Sprint, and Offroad racing. To accomplish this task a suspension and steering system was designed to limit the weight of the components without compromising the structural strength, which resulted in optimizing the overall speed and stability of the vehicle. The responsibilities for optimizing the drivetrain and chassis were handled by co-engineer Sean Drake. To ensure that each component of the suspension and steering system would hold when subjected to the expected forces, various stress analyses were performed to the components. These analyses used engineering merit in Mechanics of Materials, Plastics, Mechanical Design, and Physics to prove components would not shear nor buckle when subjected to the forces impacted from the 10 lb RC car. The analyses performed used the material properties for ABS plastic due to the light weight and durability of the material. These analyses drove the drafting designs using SolidWorks and 3D printed using ABS Plastic. Working closely with Mr. Drake during the design and manufacturing stage ensured that all components would integrate together and be focused on the goal of limiting the weight of the car. The car weighed a total of 9.25lbs which met the requirement of being less than 10 lbs. The car turned at a radius of 4.1’ which met the max radius requirement of 5’. The suspension allowed 2.5” of clearance from the ground which was greater than the required 1”

    Zhong, Xiaoyin is the Chinese language and culture Instructor and Alumni Engagement/Relations Coordinator for the College of Education and Professional Studies at Central Washington University. Originally hailing from Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, a city with a subtropical climate known for its friendliness and tolerance, Xiaoyin is proud to call it home. Guangzhou serves as China\u27s southern gateway to the world and has long been renowned as a culinary capital. Growing up in this vibrant place instilled in Xiaoyin a deep passion for both food and the exploration of Chinese culture. She cherishes her roles as a teacher and a chef equally. From a young age, she aspired to become a dedicated educator. To achieve her dream, she invested seven years in rigorous training at a normal school and college in China, honing effective teaching methods for students of all ages. Her training focused on language teaching, encompassing both English and Chinese language and literature education. In retrospect, this education laid a robust foundation for her current role as a Chinese language instructor in the United States. As the saying goes, everything happens for a reason. Moreover, she serves as the Alumni Engagement/Relations Coordinator for the College of Education and Professional Studies and feels honored to contribute to this work. In addition to her two roles at CWU, Xiaoyin is deeply committed to community service, considering it a vital aspect of her life. During her twelve years as a stay-at-home wife, she continued to engage in community outreach. She generously offered free Chinese language classes at the local church\u27s Chinese school, organized Chinese culture study groups within the community, and even worked as a chef at a senior center. While some might say she\u27s constantly busy, she would argue that she lives every day to its fullest, embracing a fulfilling and purposeful life. She is immensely grateful for these diverse experiences, as they have enriched her life, introduced her to a wide range of people and cultures, and allowed her to inspire and provide warmth to those around her.     Transformation and Embodiment: Posthumanism in Marie Darrieussecq\u27s Pig Tales and Larissa Lai\u27s Salt Fish Girl

    This thesis seeks to analyze Marie Darrieussecq’s Pig Tales and Larissa Lai’s Salt Fish Girl, with a particular emphasis on how one’s age, gender, and racial identity each affect the reception an individual has towards their animality and connections with nonhuman animals. By using posthumanism as a framework, I argue that though it is initially difficult for Darrieussecq’s narrator to accept her changing body during her adulthood (where she already has a strong sense of identity), her transformation and choice to life as a sow by the end of the novel illustrates a rejection of her society’s anthropocentrism. Further, I argue that in Salt Fish Girl, though retaining one’s animality may be a struggle, Lai frames nonhuman animal traits as desirable and imagines a world in which hybridity is embraced and actively engaged with cultural influences. Through this comparative reading, I also seek to emphasize Lai and Darrieussecq’s revision of influential cultural texts, resulting in a new attention paid to racialized and animalized bodies, with a specific emphasis on human-nonhuman animal hybridity that exemplifies a rejection of humanistic dualism
