“Stereotypically myself”: Familial constraints, gender performance, and college LGBTQIA+ identity
Get PDFWhile the United States LGBTQIA+ community has encountered increased support within academic spheres in the last decade, many members continue to face alienation and discrimination within their families. This project explores the effects of familial constraints on the performance of gender and sexuality in LGBTQIA+ youth through mixed-media, specifically interviews that informed found poems and photography portraits. Participants were college-aged members of the LGBTQIA+ community chosen through convenience sampling. Interview questions focused on familial constraints and the performance of identity, the transcripts from which were used to create poems. We took six photos of each model, portraying familial constraints, liberating elements, and artifacts significant to their respective identities. Through these processes, we found that familial constraints such as cultural beliefs and religious doctrine often limit the formation and expression of identity in LGBTAIA+ youth. While each person’s experiences are uniquely their own, there exist many commonalities between the experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth regarding family
The Malleable Latina: The Construction of Hispanic Womanhood in Hollywood
Get PDFThis research studies how Latinas have been characterized in Hollywood movies and television in the past twenty years, questioning who is able to portray Hispanic women, who gets to be considered a Hispanic woman in Hollywood, and what productions look for when casting a “Latina” character. Data analysis includes analysis of films with Latinas as the central characters and the roles Hispanic women play in films. I aim to trace how the perception of Latinas has changed over the past twenty years in film and television in order to highlight the lack of diversity in films and television and to turn the spotlight onto the need for the creation of more realistic stories for Hispanic women
Playing at Sevens: The Impulse Load and Movement Demands of Men’s Collegiate Rugby
Get PDFRugby sevens is a widely practiced sport that combines high-speed anaerobic activity with positional specific play and many body impacts. Despite its popularity and its intense physical demands on the body, many of these demands have not been fully explored. An investigation into the specifics of these physical demands can aid coaches and athletes in training and preparation for future matches. The purpose of this study was to quantify the Impulse Load and movement dynamics placed on American rugby players during competition. With this data, position specific information was compared to determine differences in physical demands. Fourteen male collegiate rugby sevens players were assigned a microsenor device and bioharness prior to testing. Time motion analysis data was collected using these microsenor devices. Acceleration data was used to calculate Impulse Load and GPS data was used to quantify total distance and distance in six speed zones. The devices were placed on each player, securely fastened around the chest, and worn for the duration of the warm-up and two competitive matches, for a period of 1 hour and 47 minutes. Players were monitored using 5Hz global positioning systems (GPS) and 100Hz triaxial accelerometers. Players were further analyzed and divided by playing position (forwards and backs). The contrasts in physical demands based on position can provide feedback to coaches on position-specific training.Faculty Advisor: Brandi Eveland-Sayer

Crosshair Optimizer
Get PDFMetaheuristic optimization algorithms are heuristics that are capable of creating a good enough\u27\u27 solution to a computationally complex problem. Algorithms in this area of study are focused on the process of exploration and exploitation: exploration of the solution space and exploitation of the results that have been found during that exploration, with most resources going toward the former half of the process. The novel Crosshair optimizer developed in this thesis seeks to take advantage of the latter, exploiting the best possible result as much as possible by directly searching the area around that best result with a stochastic approach. This research seeks to prove that the Crosshair Optimizer is comparable, if not better in some aspects, to current established metaheuristics optimization algorithms, not only in obtaining optimal results, but usability in high performance computing, and versatility through the use of multiple randomizers and parameter tuning
