What’s in a Name? Samuelson Hall 
 
 
Emil E. Samuelson (known as “Dr. Sam”) saw a lot of changes during his tenure as a teacher and 
administrator at Central Washington University. 
 
When he arrived on the campus in 1932, the school was known as the Washington State 
Normal School (WSNE), enrollment was about 350 students, the president of the United States 
was Herbert Hoover, and the Great Depression had just begun. 
 
When he retired, in 1968, the school had grown into Central Washington State College (it would 
become CWU in 1977), enrollment was 6,174, Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, and the 
Vietnam War was in full swing. 
 
Samuelson was born in 1898 in Port Wing, Wisconsin, and was one of the first two students to 
ever graduate from the local high school (in 1916). He attended the Superior State Normal 
School (now the University of Wisconsin-Superior), receiving his teaching credentials in 1918. 
 
After a brief stint in the Student Army Training Corps during World War I, Samuelson returned 
to teaching and continuing his education, earning his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 
Madison in 1932. 
 
Shortly after earning his doctorate, he joined the WSNS staff as director of student personnel 
services and research, placement director, and chair of the Division of Education, Psychology, 
and Philosophy. 
 
He continued as division chair until 1947, and also served as Dean of Men during World War II. 
From 1957 and 1965, he was Dean of Students, while also continuing to teach educational 
psychology classes. 
 
Following his retirement in 1968, Samuelson was active in a variety of community 
organizations. He died in February 1985 at the age of 87 and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in 
Ellensburg. 
 
In addition to his name, nickname, and dates of birth and death, his grave marker contains the 
simple message, “Education is Light.” He is interred next to his wife, Mary Elizabeth, who died 
in 1989. 
 
In the mid-1960s, the Student Union Building was renamed the Samuelson Union Building in his 
honor. The building was originally constructed in 1926-28 to serve as a gymnasium. It was a 
two-story brick structure in the Neoclassical Revival Style with arched windows. 
 
The building was expanded between 1935 and 1937, and again in 1951 and in 1970. In 1976, 
portions of the structure were restored following a fire and fire protection and an alarm system 
were added a few years later. 
 
For several decades, the SUB, as it was called, was the center of student life, serving as home 
for student government and a variety of student services. 
 
With the opening of the new Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) in 2005, Samuelson 
was closed for safety reasons. It was used for storage for several years before being largely 
mothballed. 
 
In 2015, the university obtained $64.5 million in funding from the state legislature to demolish 
the oldest and most unsafe sections of the building (the south wing) and replace it with new 
construction as well as a complete renovation of the north wing. 
 
Today, the renovated building, which was completed in 2018, is an integrated computer science 
technology center housing the departments of Computer Science, Sociology, Mathematics, and 
Information Technology and Administrative Management (ITAM). 
 
But while the building was significantly revamped, one thing remained the same—it retained 
Emil Samuelson’s name.

What is in a Name? Davies Hall 
 
Mary Juanita Davies (usually referred to as Juanita Davies) was an immensely talented piano 
teacher and performer, who taught at CWU from 1927 to 1965. 
 
In fact, the January 17, 1964 Campus Crier student newspaper article on the Faculty Concert 
that year noted, “Herbert Bird and Juanita Davies, faculty members of the CWSC division of 
Music, provided a musical program that gave birth to an acoustically perfect sound that had 
never before been heard on CWSC’s campus.” 
 
Davies was born in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, on July 10, 1895. She graduated at the top of her class 
from Ripon College in Wisconsin and then attended the Macphail School of Music in 
Minneapolis as well as summer schools at the Music Academy of the West in California, the 
University of Washington, and the University of Colorado. 
 
After accepting a position at CWU, to teach piano, she continued to further her education, 
working toward music degrees from the Chicago Conservatory of Music (earning a BA in 1932) 
and Northwestern University (earning an MA in 1938). 
 
In addition to teaching piano, music theory, elementary music teaching methods, and song 
literature for children, Davies helped establish a number of student music organizations 
including a men’s glee club, a women’s ensemble, and a women’s triple trio. 
 
She was also an accomplished performer, appearing regularly in solo concerts on campus and 
as an accompanist for faculty and student recitals. For about 15 years, she joined fellow music 
faculty member, Herbert Bird, who played violin, to perform at annual faculty concerts. 
 
In Samuel Mohler’s “The First 75 Years: A History of Central Washington State College,” Davies 
tells him, “From childhood, the West had been a land of romance and adventure, brought 
closer to us in Wisconsin through the summer visits of our Western cousins . . . So, after a few 
years of teaching in the Middle West the decision to come to teach at the Normal School in 
Ellensburg was not a difficult one to make.” 
 
Davies also said that one of the things she enjoyed most about teaching at Central was having 
the opportunity to teach music to children in the elementary school that was once on campus. 
 
In addition to her teaching, Davis was active with the American Association of University 
Professors, the Washington Music Teachers’ Association, the Washington Education 
Association, the State Federation of Music Clubs, the Philanthropic Education Organization 
(P.E.O.), and Delta Kappa Gamma, a national fraternal organization for women educators. 
 
In the summer of 1965, Davies retired and was awarded professor emeritus status. She 
continued to reside in Ellensburg until her death in February 1984 at the age of 88. She is buried 
at the Caersalem Cemetery in Springwater, Wisconsin, alongside other family members. 
In 1965-66, using the proceeds from a 1962 bond issue, the university erected two new 
residence halls, one of which was named in Davies’ honor (the other was named to honor 
another longtime professor, Harold Quigley). 
 
Davies Hall is part of a cluster of six detached complexes that are collectively known as the 
Bassettis, after Fred Bassetti, a noted Seattle architect who designed them. 
 
All are brick structures built in an architectural style that is a transition between Mid-Century 
Modern style and Late Modern. Each of the Bassetti buildings has a J-shaped pavilion floor plan 
and are three stories tall.

What is in a Name? Quigley Hall 
 
Harold W. Quigley originally wanted to be a doctor. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1888, Quigley 
grew up on Portland, Oregon, and, following graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School, 
worked in the offices of the Page Belting Company of Portland for four years. 
 
In 1910, Quigley enrolled at the University of Oregon and began pre-medical course work. 
During the next four years, he sang in the Glee Club, competed in oratory contests, and met 
Katherine Northrup. The two were married in 1916 and had two children. 
 
While earning good grades in his pre-med classes, Quigley soon decided he wanted to focus on 
something different, and began studying industrial chemistry. But after discovering there were 
not many openings in that field in the West, he changed his major his senior year to teaching. 
 
After graduating from Oregon in 1914, Quigley taught school and coached athletics in Bandon, 
Oregon, and then from 1917-1924, taught physics and coached football, basketball, track and 
field, at his alma mater, Jefferson High in Portland, where he had great success in multiple 
sports. 
 
Quigley, who was inducted into the Portland Interscholastic League’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 
2010, coached the Jefferson Democrats (or Demos) to football championships in 1918 and 
1919, a basketball championship in 1922, and the track and field team to championships for 
seven straight years (1918-1924). 
 
In 1925, the Washington State Normal School (now known as CWU) hired Quigley to coach its 
track and field and football teams and to teach health education courses. After two successful 
years of coaching football, Quigley decided to devote his energies to the classroom and stepped 
away from coaching. 
 
Quigley taught zoology and biology over the next decade before deciding to return to school to 
earn a master’s degree. From 1939 to 1945, he accumulated graduate study credits at the 
University of Chicago, and eventually earned his MS in zoology. 
 
In 1951, Quigley, who was battling some health issues, retired from teaching. Three years later, 
he was made Emeritus Professor of Biology at Central. Following his retirement, Quigley and his 
wife resided in Bend, Oregon, where he died in 1981 at the age of 93. 
 
In 1966, construction was finished on a new residence hall, part of the Bassetti complex (after 
the architect Fred Bassetti), which was named in Quigley’s honor. The three- story building’s 
design reflected the transition from mid-century Modern architectural style to the newer Late 
Modern style.

What is in a Name? Moore Hall 
 
 
In her time as an education professor at CWU, Jennie Moore obviously made an impression. 
Born in 1889 in Michigan and the Spokane area, Moore graduated from the Washington State 
Normal School with a BA in education in 1925 and, after teaching in Montana, joined the faculty 
at Central four years later. 
 
As a member of the faculty, Moore’s expertise was in providing instruction for rural school 
teachers who would be working in one-room schoolhouses in the state. Among the classes 
Moore taught were schoolroom management and rural school procedures. 
 
The Quarterly of the Washington State Normal School catalog, published in 1929, noted, “The 
training of teachers for rural schools is conducted in a group of typical one-, two-, and three-
teacher schools located only a few miles from the Normal School campus. 
 
“Students who wish to teach in rural schools are given the opportunity to observe all types of 
school activities, to study first-hand the problems of organizing and conducting such schools, to 
teach in rural schools, and to assist in the social activities of the community in which the school 
is located.” 
 
In 1937, Moore took a break from teaching at the normal school to pursue a master’s in 
education at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in New York. 
 
The July 15, 1937 edition of the Campus Crier, the university’s student newspaper, noted that 
“Miss Jenny Moore of the Education department is taking nine months leave of absence, 
beginning next fall. 
 
“As soon as the grades are in and her apartment is dismantled, she will leave for eastern 
Washington to take a well-earned rest until the latter part of August,” the article said. “During 
this time, Miss Moore intends to lead the simple life and to forego all intellectual effort except 
that of reading.” 
 
Moore successfully completed her training at Columbia, earning her master’s degree in 
education on June 1, 1938. On August 29, Moore had begun her journey back to Ellensburg to 
resume teaching at Central when she suffered a heart attack in Charlottesville, Virginia and 
died. She was buried at the Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. 
 
In 1938, the Jennie Moore Memorial Scholarship was started in her honor. For the next few 
decades, the $100 scholarship was awarded annually to a worthy student “based on personality 
traits and professional promise.” 
 
In 1961, the university completed construction of a multi-story dormitory complex that was 
named Anderson-Moore Hall, in honor of Mabel T. Anderson, a longtime Central teacher, and 
Moore. The architectural style of the twin brick and concrete buildings, which are virtually 
identical and connected by an open breezeway, is a neo-formal expression of mid-century 
modern design. 
 
Moore was posthumously awarded the “Honor Key,” the highest national honor of the Kappa 
Delta Pi international honor society in education.
