    A study of the impact of oxygen vacancies on the VUV efficiency of rare-earth doped YBO3 via Ca2+ co-doping

    Vacuum ultraviolet excitation and reflectance spectroscopy were used to study doped yttrium borate phosphors with composition Y1-x-yBO3:REy, Cax up to x = 0.10 and up to y = 0.06 (Eu3+ or Tb3+). These data were used to estimate host-to-activator energy transfer efficiencies. The introduction of Ca2+ leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies, VO●●, that act as energy traps. We find that the introduction of these defects lowers the transfer efficiency to both dopants, with Eu3+ being impacted more than Tb3+. The results are discussed in terms of the energies of dopant states relative to band states, and the difference in trapping mechanisms between the two rare earth ions

    JCATI Carbon Fiber Recycler: Oven Heating System

    What happens to carbon fiber from airline wing tips when their service life ends, and they get replaced? Throwing them away would be wasteful, the Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) project can extract the carbon fiber from airline wing tips to be reused. The JCATI project is a continuation from the work done by previous senior class engineering students and has a new set of issues to be addressed each year. This year there was a need for a new oven system for the JCATI carbon fiber recycler with this project’s focus being on designing the oven’s heating system to reach an overall temperature of 500°C ± 5°C in 15 minutes and to be able to hold that temperature for 30 minutes. Twelve mathematical analyses were conducted during the designing of the heating system to determine design parameters such as voltage/power required and stresses/forces the system will encounter while running. Then the oven heating system was built in three sections, heating controls, heating cartridges, and the thermocouple assemblies with some parts being manufactured/created in house whilst others were purchased through outside vendors. The new heating system device demonstrated good performance with it taking approximately 14 minutes and 23 seconds on average to reach the required temperature threshold 500°C ± 5°C and the actual temperature was the same as the displayed temperature. The device was also able to hold an average temperature of 500°C ± 5°C for the 30-minute cycle needed to run the machine

    Biological Processes Associated With Up-Regulated Genes in Aging Human Skeletal Muscle

    The precise molecular factors that contribute to declines in skeletal muscle size and function with advancing age are not completely understood. PURPOSE: To identify biological processes associated with upregulated genes in aging human skeletal muscle. METHODS: Skeletal muscle biopsy samples (vastus lateralis) were analyzed from healthy younger (27±3yr; 8M, 1F; BMI: 24.5±2.0) and older adults (68±5yr; 6M, 3F; BMI: 25.9±4.7 kg•m-2). Muscle biopsies were obtained after an overnight fast under resting conditions controlling for previous physical activity. Total RNA was isolated and whole transcriptome next-generation sequencing (HISeq2500, Illumina) was performed on cDNA.     Role of Body Mass and Physical Activity in Autonomic Function Modulation on Post-COVID-19 Condition: An Observational Subanalysis of Fit-COVID Study

    The harmful effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can reach the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and endothelial function. Therefore, the detrimental multiorgan effects of COVID-19 could be induced by deregulations in ANS that may persist after the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Additionally, investigating the differences in ANS response in overweight/obese, and physically inactive participants who had COVID-19 compared to those who did not have the disease is necessary. The aim of the study was to analyze the autonomic function of young adults after mild-to-moderate infection with SARS-CoV-2 and to assess whether body mass index (BMI) and levels of physical activity modulates autonomic function in participants with and without COVID-19. Patients previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and healthy controls were recruited for this cross-sectional observational study. A general anamnesis was taken, and BMI and physical activity levels were assessed. The ANS was evaluated through heart rate variability. A total of 57 subjects were evaluated. Sympathetic nervous system activity in the post-COVID-19 group was increased (stress index; p = 0.0273). They also presented lower values of parasympathetic activity (p \u3c 0.05). Overweight/obese subjects in the post-COVID-19 group presented significantly lower parasympathetic activity and reduced global variability compared to non-obese in control group (p \u3c 0.05). Physically inactive subjects in the post-COVID-19 group presented significantly higher sympathetic activity than active subjects in the control group. Parasympathetic activity was significantly increased in physically active subjects in the control group compared to the physically inactive post-COVID-19 group (p \u3c 0.05). COVID-19 promotes changes in the ANS of young adults, and these changes are modulated by overweight/obesity and physical activity levels

    Examining Enrichment Use by Captive Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

    Environmental enrichment is important for animal welfare because it can promote psychological wellbeing and enable animals to express their natural behaviors in captive settings. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) have unique cognitive abilities and are prone to engaging in abnormal behaviors in unstimulating conditions. Environmental enrichment can meet their need for mental stimulation and prevent the expression of abnormal behaviors in captivity. However, chimpanzees may show individual variability in the way in which they benefit from enrichment and use enrichment devices, so investigating nuances in enrichment use as well as understanding individual differences in enrichment use are important to be better able to meet the enrichment needs of captive chimpanzees. In the current study, a sample from 2,054 videos of captive chimpanzees (P. troglodytes) housed at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in Cle Elum, WA, using enrichment items was coded using a detailed ethogram to determine if the ethograms were effective in capturing the use of different types of enrichment objects, engagement in manipulation behaviors, and the social contexts surrounding enrichment use. The majority of enrichment object use and manipulation behaviors were accounted for by the ethograms, with “other” designations being rarely used in coding. As predicted, specific enrichment objects correlated with different manipulation behaviors and social contexts, suggesting that enrichment objects can fulfill different behavioral and social needs. Additionally, individual chimpanzees showed unique preferences for enrichment objects, indicating that caregivers of captive chimpanzees should consider individual needs of enrichment rather than using a “one size fits all” approach to enrichment provisions
