The Influence Student Behavior is Having in Today\u27s Schools
This study examined teachers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the interrelationships between behavior policy, student behavior, and autonomy-supportive behavior. It approximated the realities experienced by teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they encountered in implementing behavior policies and fostering autonomy-supportive behavior. While attrition, shortage, and dissatisfaction were not the primary focus, they significantly influenced the teacher participants based on their experiences with high teacher turnover in their schools. I collected qualitative through semi-structured interviews to explore teachers’ realities, using six participants from Memphis Shelby County Schools. By utilizing conflict theory and the ambiguity-conflict matrix adapted from Matland (1997), I explored the conflict created by the potential lack of autonomy in creating behavior policy and implementing autonomy-supportive behavior. Based on the findings, participants did not attribute classroom behaviors to the students themselves. Instead, they constructed a reality around student behavior characterized by understanding and a desire for supportive policies for students struggling with autonomy-supportive behavior. They believed student behavior was symptomatic of deeper issues requiring counseling and more extensive social-emotional learning. Simultaneously, participants recognized that negative student behavior significantly contributed to learning loss and adversely affected bystander students socially and academically. The ambiguity in schoolwide behavior policies was a source of conflict. Participants felt unsupported by the administration in dealing with extreme behaviors and perceived the behavior policy as inconsistent at all levels. As a result, they relied on their autonomy within their classrooms, heavily emphasizing relationship-building with students to promote autonomy-supportive behavior. The final chapter offered implications for research and practice, such as promoting autonomy-supportive behavior and providing access to counseling and therapy for students with severe behavioral issues
What is Sports Wagering? A Scoping Review
Sports wagering has been defined as wagering on the outcome of an athletic competition, specifically a single-game sporting event. In recent years, this definition has proven insufficient to account for the different technological opportunities to engage in sports wagering. The goal of this scoping review was to examine the terms, definitions, and specific gambling activities that comprise sports wagering and to review operationalizations of sports wagering measurement. A systematic search was used to extract (e.g., betting, gambling), definitions, gambling modes (online vs. in-person), encompassed activities, and measurement methods. Seventy-seven articles reveal similarities and discrepancies in the definitions and operations of sports wagering. A consensus definition for traditional sports betting is proposed, excluding activities such as propositional bets, fantasy sports, esports, and animal races, which require distinct definitions for clarity. These findings underscore the need for future research to refine the conceptual boundaries and definitions of sports wagering-related activities
Beauty in Mortality: Leonor Fini\u27s Hermetically Influenced Ancient Egyptian Sphinx
This thesis explores how Surrealist artist Leonor Fini employs a version of the ancient Egyptian Sphinx in her paintings Little Hermit Sphinx (1948) and Petit Sphinx Gardien (1943-44). Specifically, Fini reframes the Sphinx’s role as a contemplative guardian presiding over the liminal threshold between life and death. Fini merges the images inspired by the ancient Egyptian Sphinx’s recumbent pose with the Hellenistic Sphinx’s feminine attributes while invoking Hermetic and psychological concepts of transformation and duality. Through analyzing Fini’s Sphinx motif alongside her Surrealist contemporaries—such as Jane Graverol, Frida Kahlo, Paul Delvaux, and Dorothea Tanning—and comparing to those of previous artistic movements, focusing especially on fin de siècle Symbolist artists such as Gustave Moreau and Ferdinand Khnopff, this thesis demonstrates how Fini innovatively restored the Sphinx to its ancient status while modernizing the motif in twentieth-century Surrealist art in order to present an alternative understanding of mortality and femininity
ACCURATE AND AUTOMATED QUANTIFICATION OF HEPATIC STEATOSIS AND IRON OVERLOAD USING MRI VIA SIMULATIONS, PHANTOMS AND PATIENT DATA
Hepatic steatosis and iron overload are common manifestations of diffuse liver disease. They can cause lipotoxicity and iron toxicity respectively via oxidative hepatocellular injury and can lead to progressive fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually, liver failure. Over the past two decades, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a non-invasive tool to diagnose steatosis and iron overload. Multi-spectral fat-water models incorporating R2* correction have been proposed to simultaneously quantify fat and iron overload. However, there is still an ongoing debate on whether the multi-spectral signal model assuming same R2* (single-R2*) or different R2* (dual-R2*) for fat and water is accurate in the presence of fat. Additionally, current studies lack thorough investigation of R2* techniques for fat and iron quantification covering the entire clinical range. Apart from this, clinical reporting of steatosis and iron overload from MRI images requires manual liver segmentation, which is time intensive and can have reader bias, hence serving as a bottleneck in the clinical workflow. To overcome these limitations, the purpose of this dissertation is firstly, to evaluate the performance of multispectral fat-water models for fat and iron quantification using simulations covering the entire clinical spectrum and validating using phantoms and secondly, to design an automatic liver segmentation algorithm for expediting the clinical reporting of hepatic iron overload
Changing Roles for the Printed Hymnal at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century: An Analysis of Three Non-Denominational Hymnals
The 1990s saw a marked increase in hymnal publication, an area of printing that had remained steady but slow through most of the twentieth century. The work of hymnal committees and marketing departments during this decade suggests a real optimism about church music and re-energized congregations for the new century, but the flurry of publishing activity was more likely fueled by complicated changes begun decades earlier. The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) had opened the door for new worship forms as they considered the needs of lay worshippers; counter-cultural movements of the same decade all but demanded new music for young Jesus-followers, creating the songs that would eventually find their place in both supplemental and primary hymnals. Worship wars that segmented congregations by worship style, technological advancements that offered viable alternatives to printed books, and deep ideological rifts within denominational groups meant that many denominational publishers had already printed their last major hymnal by the turn of the century, and others would print what was likely their last before two decades had passed. This study arose from a survey of materials in the Fettke Collection of the Robert E. Hooper Archives at Beaman Library of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee—in particular, three non-denominational hymnals edited by Tom Fettke, and work product for those hymnals. The author explores the 1990s rise in hymnal publishing activity—and the subsequent decline—through an analysis of these three hymnals. Without the same theological considerations (and pressures) that denominational publishers might have, non-denominational publishers are primarily concerned with producing a printed book based on perceived worship music preferences across a broad range of churches. In these non-denominational hymnals, changes in broader worship music trends and preferences are more clearly evident than in denominational hymnals where changes based on specific theological or doctrinal positions may also be reflected
The Impact of Prison Education on Prison Misconduct
Prison education programs can be found in nearly every carceral institution and are the cornerstone of rehabilitative efforts. Prison education, ranging from basic adult education to college-in-prison programs, provides numerous transformative educational opportunities that can lead to successful desistance. While the benefits of participation in prison education programs are evident, including reduced recidivism, increased employment, and family impact, the impact on reducing prison misconduct is less clear. This study aimed to determine the association between prison education and misconduct while controlling for the demographic, educational, and social factors that impact participation in prison education programs. A secondary analysis was conducted using the Bureau of Justice Statics’ 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI). The results a logistical analysis of the impact of prison education on write-ups indicated that respondents who participated in prison education within the past 12 months were more likely to have a write-up in the past 12 months, when compared to non-participants while controlling for the individual, family, crime, and system-level factors that contribute to misconduct. These findings imply that prison education is does not necessarily contribute to decreased misconduct and that further exploration of contextual factors contributing to misconduct is warranted
First Generation Ultrasound Body Scanner
The development of a first-generation ultrasound body scanner aims to acquire preliminary signal data and image results that will aid in the design of a system with a scalable transducer array for comprehensive abdominal imaging. This system aims to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound with the potential for improved image quality, a broader field of view (i.e., better body coverage), and quantitative images. Currently, the prototype utilizes two single-element transducers mechanically swept across a 180-degree arc, with the goal of expanding to a scalable curved transducer array in future designs to enable potential clinical use. Furthermore, the first-generation ultrasound body scanner aims to provide data to evaluate the potential of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) to produce high-resolution, cross-sectional, and volumetric 3D images of the abdomen through multistatic transmission ultrasound data. Key research objectives include improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) through noise mitigation techniques, optimizing the time gain compensation (TGC) curve, and comparing monostatic and multistatic acquisition configurations. Full synthetic aperture (FSA) acquisition using various angular densities (16, 32, 48, 64) around the arc is analyzed, showing improved image quality with the increased number of acquisition points. The findings show a decrease in noise by 2.95 dB when using metallic shielding around the connector, as well as a TGC curve that reduces amplitude variation vs. depth by less than 10%. Image quality improved both qualitatively and quantitatively when comparing monostatic and multistatic imaging configurations as well as when the angular sampling density (i.e., number of positions around the arc) was increased. These results demonstrate the potential of the ultrasound body scanner to offer diagnostic-quality imaging with improved clarity and contrast, providing a promising alternative modality for abdominal imaging
