Appropriate Use of Healthcare Services: A Patient Education Initiative

    No full text
Many patients struggle to determine when and where to seek medical care. This is especially present in those with limited health literacy, language barriers, or unfamiliarity with the U.S. healthcare system. This can lead to the misuse, underutilization, or overutilization of primary care and other healthcare services, which contributes to excessive healthcare spending, crowding, and poorer long-term outcomes. This project employed a mixed-methods approach to assess provider perceptions of patient understanding regarding appropriate healthcare utilization. A survey and clinical vignette-based assessment were distributed to staff at a primary care outpatient clinic to identify common areas of confusion. In response to the findings, an educational poster was developed in English and translated into Spanish, visually outlining appropriate uses for primary care, urgent care, telehealth, emergency departments, and other healthcare services. The poster is designed as a template to be adapted into additional languages and serves as a tool to improve health literacy and reduce misutilization. The project highlights the need for multilingual, culturally sensitive patient education to enhance navigation of the U.S. healthcare system

Plateau-Descent joint Symmetry On Quasi-Stirling Permutations

Stirling permutations, STnST_n, are permutations of the multiset [0,0,1,1,,n,n][0,0,1,1,\dots,n,n] which avoid the pattern 212212. Elizalde showed, extending a result from Bona, that the bivariate generating function for the plateau and descent statistics, P and D, respectively, is jointly symmetric over STnST_n. This dissertation considers an extension of the Stirling permutations introduced by Archer et al. called the Quasi-Stirling permutations, QnQ_n. Quasi-Stirling permutations generalize Stirling permutations by requiring only that patterns 12121212 and 21212121 are avoided. While the P and D statistics extend naturally onto QnQ_n the corresponding bivariate generating function is no longer symmetric. We propose a new statistic, PdP_d, which reduces to PP over the Stirling permutations, and we conjecture produces a jointly symmetric generating function with DD over QnQ_n. We prove this symmetry for a subset of QnQ_n in two ways using both a finer partition of the descent statistic as well as a recursion on intransitive trees. This work features heavily the combinatorial analysis of rooted edge labeled plane trees, rooted vertex labeled binary plane trees and intransitive bipartite trees. We generalize the connection to bipartite trees by introducing a new notation which generates tripartite graphs and conjecture the existence of a map on these objects which demonstrates the PdDP_d-D joint symmetry on all of QnQ_n.Mathematical SciencesDoctor of Philosophy (PhD

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists & Dietary Recommendations...What We Know So Far

    No full text
GLP-1 receptor agonists have been increasingly prescribed to both diabetic patients as well as overweight/obese patients. However, there is ambiguity on dietary recommendations that should be made to these patients to avoid nutritional deficiencies/muscle wasting. This project includes a literature view on what current recommendations are for these patients

Understanding Veterans’ Preferences for Firearm Safety Conversations: Developing Culturally Conscious Approaches to Suicide Prevention

    No full text
Background: United States military veterans suffer a disproportionately high suicide rate compared to the general population. Firearms represented the majority of lethal means involved in successful suicide attempts in veterans from 2001 to 2022. Communication with firearm owning patients is often difficult with a prevalent distrust of providers during interviews. For the provider, lack of training can lead to hesitancy approaching the topic. Once provided training, providers self-report more confidence speaking to the topic. Methods: A survey and interview guideline were designed using data from a literature search focusing on veteran suicide and firearm owning cultural competency. Data collection was performed with community partners and a convenience sample of veterans, active military, and reservists. Raw data was coded for thematic similarities and trends in themes were analyzed for formal results. Results: 11 total valid responses were obtained. Physician questioning is preferred when there are concerns on safety at home. Veterans are generally in favor of lethal means safety discussions, emphasizing the need for safe and secure storage, especially when children are present in the household. Participants preferred nonconfrontational language that emphasizes firearms being discussed in the same tone as other lethal means like medications. Participants also prefer conversations with trusted providers who have knowledge of veteran culture and of firearms safety. Conclusion: Themes are supported by existing literature on the general population. Further studies should include a larger sample and focus on elucidating cultural touchpoints that firearm owning veterans would find relatable to create and disseminate lethal means safety resources.University of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of VermontUniversity of Vermon

“synthesis Of Resistance”: An Investigation Into The Poetic Resistance Traditions Of Ireland And Palestine

    No full text
This thesis is an investigation into the echoes and correspondences of poetics across the geographies and temporalities of the respective colonized experiences of Ireland and Palestine. By using a malleable understanding of temporality, one that is not necessarily equal in scale, this thesis seeks to illustrate how poetic literature is often written as a mode of response and resistance to violence and colonization. Since the colonization of Ireland is an extensively long timeline in comparison to Palestine, this thesis claims we can use a timeline where key moments (the moment of colonization, moments of disaster, and moments of resistance) are placed in parallel in order to analyze the poetry surrounding the events in an act of cross-cultural identification. Placing Ireland and Palestine in parallel can be difficult due to their distinct geographic, temporal and cultural differences, however there are many preexisting postcolonial theorists that use Ireland and Palestine as examples of cross-colonial identification such as Edward Said and Joe Cleary. While an understanding of their complex histories of corresponding experiences is an important step in the identification process, this thesis goes a step further and analyzes their lineages of poetic literatures together through a process of parallel close readings. This style of framing allows for analysis indigenous themes across the respective poetries while also preserving their alignment for analysis of identification and correspondence. By framing each close reading with the colonial history, this thesis illustrates how colonialism impacts the thematic and formal poetic stylings of communities.EnglishMaster of Arts (MA

(Food) waste as a failure of the imagination: Circular menu design

    No full text
GraduateMy transdisciplinary research explores the role of chefs (any skilled professional who is responsible for and has a specialised knowledge of sourcing and transforming ingredients for human consumption) as change agents for food system transformation, applying a circular economy lens as a framework for sustainable food systems – i.e., a food system where waste is designed out. This poster presentation will focus on the “Circular Menu Design” scale I developed for the second phase of my Vermont-based study exploring the relationships, values, and practices of chefs that may contribute to accelerating a circular economy for food

Using a quantitative trait nucleotide simulation to assess the impact of migration and thermal selection on local adaptation in a mussel hybrid zone

    No full text
GraduateMarine environments face temperature change and novel introductions of invasive species, altering native species’ genetic makeup. Invasive species may occupy the range of a native species of the same genus, leading to a hybrid zone. A hybrid zone along the southeastern coast of Australia consists of invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels and native Mytilus planulatus mussels. Populations with higher proportions of M. galloprovincialis genomes establish in warmer temperature regions. This study proposes to use a combination of evolutionary simulations and larval selection experiments to assess how migration, admixture, and thermal selection impact adaptation, and how climatic scenarios influence hybrid population survival

Spatial Optimization and LiDAR for Vermont Energy Resilience (SOLVER)

    No full text
GraduateElectrical Grid Utility providers spend time and money on maintaining the reliability and resilience of their grid systems; electrical grid distribution utilities have limited resources for maintaining vegetation. New statewide LiDAR collects of Q1 quality data are high enough resolution to assess vegetation risk to distribution grids, allowing for risk assessments to grid resilience at lower cost to utility providers. Contingencies were created based on these risk metrics and simulated using Transmission & Distribution Co-Simulation, identifying the severity of potential outages and proliferation of upstream effects within distribution feeders and transmission systems
