Fat Shaming, Body Stigma and Corpus Writing in Roxane Gay’s A Memoir of (My) Body

    No full text
Identifying herself as the other in a world where thinness is a passport to ecstasy and social acceptance, the Haitian immigrant Roxane Gay impregnates her book Hunger with a plethora of traumatic experiences she withstands due to the pervasiveness of fat phobia and fat shaming in every nook and cranny of American society. Being an ardent proponent of feminism and fat acceptance, Gay shakes the ground of what Graham calls “lipoliteracy” through deconstructing the binary fat / thin, black / white. The first part highlights the current beauty standard. The second section examines the multifaceted oppression Gay experiences because of her fatness. This includes her hyper(in)visibility and cultural strangeness in social interaction, media paradigms, and medical establishment. The ultimate part charts Gay’s journey of coming to terms with her body. It zeroes in on the cathartic potential of “corpus vocabulary” by relying on the ideas of narrative psychologists. Through corpus writing, she sloughs off her former self and etches a new identity marked by power and self-value

The study aims to isolate the fungi that present with the symptoms of palm leaf spot disease in certain orchards in Al- Najaf Governorate. The study indicates that various species of fungi have emerged through the process of isolation, including Fusarium oxysporum; Aspergillus sp; Alternaria spp; Alternaria alternate; Thielaviposis paradora; Cladosporium herbarum; Fusarium solani; Mucor sp; and Aspergillus spp. Furthermore, during the researchers' testing, it is discovered that isolated fungi such as Lind Gar Cladosporium herbarum, keissler Alternaria alternate, F.solani (Mort.)sacc, and Fusarium oxyporum schelecht  possess the pathogenic capability to induce palm leaf spot disease. The results of an experiment have assessed the efficacy of two different chemical pesticides. It has been observed that the chemical pesticide Othello top 32.5% SC TM effectively reduces the rate of fungal infection. Specifically, after spraying in the orchards of Al-Mishkhab district, the infection rate decreased to 2.33%. In contrast, the infection rate remained higher at 20.67% after spraying in the orchards of Al-hira district. Similarly, the results of spraying Al Najaf district orchards with the chemical pesticide (Brak 24 EC) for infection severity show that the lower infection rate after spraying is %1.9. However, in the orchards of Al-Haydaria district, the infection rate increased to 18.5% after spraying. There is no significant difference in infection severity between the two types of pesticide used in the orchards of Al Najaf and Al-Mishkhab districts. Furthermore, the chemical pesticide (Othello top 32.5% SC TM) is more efficient in pesticide spraying. It achieves an efficiency rate of 85.1% in Al-Kufa orchards and a lesser rate of 61.66% in Al-Hira orchards. In addition, the chemical pesticide (Brak 24 EC) demonstrates a higher level of effectiveness in orchards located in the Al Najaf district, with an efficiency rate of 70%. Conversely, orchards in the Al Abbasia district show a lower efficiency rate of 57.27%.  Besides, the chemical pesticide, (Othello top 32.5% SC TM), is superior in terms of spraying efficiency. It effectively reduces the percentage of pests in four different orchards, with an average spraying efficiency of 78.67%

Poor sleep quality will cause negative effects on the health of elderly, including those with hypertension. The sleep pattern may change, physiologically or be disturbed by certain conditions. Therefore, several non-pharmacological interventions are needed to improve their sleep quality, such as relaxation and Atsiri oil aromatherapy. This study aims to analyse the effect of the combination of these two therapies on the elderly’s quality of sleep in Kadu Village, Jatigede district, in Sumedang, West Java Province. This study used the Quasy Experimental method with control group. The elderly population were 189 people, with 36 respondents as our samples that were divided into two groups, the intervention and control group. A purposive sampling technique was utilised and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used for the pre and post-test. It is found that in the intervention group, before the therapies were implemented, the sleep quality of the elderly was categorised in 6% had good sleep quality and 94% of them had poor sleep quality. After being given the interventions for two weeks, they showed a better the sleep quality, with the results of good and poor sleep quality were 72% and 28% respectively. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test of the intervention group showed the p-value 0.004 (< 0.05). It means that there was a positive effect of relaxation with atsiri oil therapy on elderly’s sleep quality. It is because there several substances in atsiri oil’s extraction that may increase the relaxation hormones like serotonin and melatonin when it was inhaled. Get PDF
Background and aim: The most widespread pathological condition of peripherals and coronary artery disorders, as well as of cerebellar problems, is atherosclerosis (AS). Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder world wide and is one of the major risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Leptin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) are released by adipose tissue, which is a tissue that is found throughout the body and is considered an important endocrine system, these are essential for the control of immunological and energy responses. Methods:A case-control study was used in the design of the current investigation. 100 male participants, comprising 60 atherosclerosis individuals, 30 obese patients, 30 normal weight patients, and 40 healthy people, 20 of whom were obese and 20 of whom were of normal weight. Age between(40-65). This work was done between November/2022 and May/2023. Patient from the Karbala Center for Cardiac Disease and Surgery. A 3 ml sample of venous blood was obtained from patients and was healthy. In addition, some information was taken from each person(age, height, weight). Results:There has been a significant increase in concentrations of each one of the hormones (Leptin, PAI-1) in all groups when compared with non obese control. Conclusion:leptin and PAI-1 plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis in obese individuals. A person's risk of developing atherosclerosis increases with rising body mass index. It was discovered that the hormone Leptin, which regulates metabolism, is rising, which might be an indicator that the metabolic problem in obese people is becoming more common

The Enigmatic Literary Gradations of News as Mass Media Staple/Consumables

    Get PDF
News is the enigmatic representation of factual and sometimes concocted daily events. But the presentation of news as a mass media staple goes beyond the mere portrayal of events as they occur. The journalistic output is mostly defined by gatekeepers and entrepreneurs of media outfits. This study adopts a dispassionate look at news as a mass media literary staple and the contributing factors in news portrayals. It discovered that apart from the heuristic perception of news, there is a conundrum behind news-fare and this conundrum is inherent in the internal factor of the mass media stable’s setup itself (house-style and literary ideology), qualifying factors such as media ownership (entrepreneurship), media system (environment) and external factors such as audience/readership as well as individual’s literary perception of the importance of media fare, and the utility of the news-fare itself. The study proffers a mitigation of these influences on the mass media portrayals in order to resolve the conundrum that media fare has become, and to prevent its perception as media farce. News items should not be reduced to a conundrum due to contrived gatekeeper choices in mass media portrayals. This would play a mitigating role in moderating the resulting perception of news as a ruse or as a mere shibboleth that should be endured for its nuisance value

Female Oppositional Gaze in Scopic Regime: A Case Study of Tess of the d’Urbervilles

    Get PDF
In the conventional scholarship surrounding Thomas Hardy’s works, Tess is commonly perceived as an object of desire for the male gaze, as well as a victim of the sexual politics of her time. This research addresses this critical issue from a (post-)feminist perspective, with a particular focus on the dimension of the female oppositional gaze. The aim is to explore the defiant gaze strategy that Tess employs when confronted with Alec, a representative of the male Scopic Regime, and to elucidate its profound implications. Through an inquiry into Tess’s use of both external anti-gaze techniques and spiritual insight as means of resistance against the abuser’s attempts at alienation, this essay argues that Tess effectively dissolves, impedes, and ultimately thwarts the abuser’s will to conquer, thus inducing a sense of counter-alienation regarding sexual politics. Consequently, Tess’s oppositional gaze not only contributes to the development of a unique Scopic Regime among British women but also assists in constructing a special visual poetics in the Victorian era
