    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aimed at identifying the prevailing parenting styles in the Bekaa region- (Lebanon) from adolescents’ perspective. In addition, it aimed at detecting the adolescents’ self-esteem levels, and the relationships between parenting styles and adolescents’ self-esteem. Approach/Methodology/Design: A purposeful sample of 728 students completed the study questionnaire. The questionnaire was adapted from previous studies and its validity and reliability were established. The study followed the descriptive analytical approach for the purpose of data collection and data analysis. Findings: The results showed that the prevailing parenting style as perceived by adolescents in Bekaa is the authoritative style (88%). Another finding was that 78.3% of the adolescents have normal levels of self-esteem. Moreover, Pearson’s r showed a moderate, positive and significant correlation between self-esteem and authoritative parenting style and a weak, negative correlation between self-esteem and both authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. Linear regression analysis indicated that the three parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative and permissive) and father's educational level are the predictors of self-esteem. Originality/value: The value of this study lies in serving the community by highlighting some points that play an important role in shaping and forming the personality of our children who, in turn, will be active members of our society

Muslim Cosmopolitanism in Rural Bangladesh: The Construction of Power Dynamics vis-à-vis Cosmopolitan Identity

    Get PDF
The article addresses how the migrant Bangladeshi workers, in their bid to be a part of the Middle Eastern Muslim Cosmopolis, make sense of the negotiation between the concepts of nation-state and umma. The article also examines whether these migrants’ endorsement of a ‘foreign’ Muslim culture in Bangladesh has created a community of ‘other’ Muslims perceived to be less Muslim because of being less exposed to the Middle East culture. In a rapidly changing context in terms of cultural identification, it is pertinent to investigate if the power, prestige, and privilege that these Bangladeshi migrants enjoy in Bangladesh rely solely on their becoming ‘better’ Muslims or rather chiefly stem from their monetary gain. The article explores whether a good financial status becomes the driving force in creating the Muslim ‘other,’ and how it has been inspiring others to migrate to the Middle East to become successful and ‘Global’ Muslim Citizens. The concepts of umma and cosmopolitan constitute the conceptual framework of the study. The study also presents a critique of cultural influence and identity construction based on faith. In addition, some migrants were interviewed to reflect upon their experience and the role of religious affiliation in the construction of cosmopolitan Muslim identity. Both collective conscience and the sense of religious affinity are addressed

    Get PDF
Purpose: The study aimed to find out whether pregnant women were more likely than non-pregnant women to be hospitalized and had the worse outcome due to COVID-19 and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Methods: The study is of cross-sectional design.  One hundred and nine pregnant and non-pregnant in child bearing age (16- 49 years) participated in the study. Information about their stay, gestational age, if pregnant, and the presence of medical diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, asthma, or other disease were recorded. There was a follow-up regarding the duration of hospital stay, their prognosis, and the mortality rate was taken. Results: Diseases such as hypertension and the increase in maternal age were prevalent among the women admitted to ICU. This group of participants has the worst outcome. In our study, pregnant ladies needing respiratory support with CPAP bad prognosis since 18 of the 19 pregnant ladies died. Conclusion: Women of reproductive age with SARS-CoV-2 were shown to be at increased risk of pneumonia and even death. Even with ICU hospitalization, 18 of 19 pregnant ladies who participated in this study and who needed CPAP as respiratory support died. The 17 ladies with hypertension included in our study had the worse outcome regarding hospital stay duration and bad prognosis or even death

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study examines all the financial literature available on the empirical studies conducted to investigate the dominants of factors that affect the dividend policy of non-financial and publicly traded firms. In preparing this review article, Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) have been employed to examine the systematic review thoroughly. Methods: The study enlists six main models that provide theoretical explanations of DIV policy: signaling theory, Agency Costs, cash flow theory, bird in hand theory, clientele effects of DIVs hypothesis, tax effect hypothesis, and DIV irrelevance theory. Furthermore, this study enlists the various empirical studies conducted to determine the factors that affect the DIV policy of non-financial publicly traded companies. Findings: In this study total of 400 papers have been screened, and 26 of them found relevant and appropriate. The study only reviewed the studies undertaken by non-financial companies, and the financial firms have been excluded. Furthermore, only publicly traded firms are included in the study. This paper summarizes main theories that explain dividend policies including signaling theory, agency cost cash flow theory, bird in hand theory, and dividend irrelevance theory among others. Moreover, it outlines and identifies major factors that are investigated in empirical studies as determinants of dividend policies of publicly-traded non-financial firms. Originality/Value: This study examines all the financial literature available on the empirical studies conducted to investigate the dominants of factors that affect the dividend policy of the non-financial and publicly traded firms

Purpose: This study investigated the emotional intelligence and work commitment levels of public school administrators (elementary and secondary) in the districts of Candijay, Alicia, Mabini, Anda, and Guindulman (CAMAG), Division of Bohol, for the School Year 2018 – 2019, with the end view of proposing recommendations. Approach/Methodology/Design: Data from 49 participants on emotional intelligence and work commitment are extracted using Schutte Intelligence Scale or Assessing Emotions Scale and Meyer and Allen's Three Commitment Model (TCM) Questionnaire. It espoused a descriptive-correlational research design with the aid of standardized tools. Findings: Results showed that females dominated among the respondents, wherein most of them obtained only a few Master's units. All dimensions of emotional intelligence were rated "Very High," and in general, they obtained "Very High" emotional intelligence level. The research participants have very high affective, continuance, and normative commitment levels. Overall, they possess a "Very High" commitment level. On the other hand, the respondents’ demographic profile (as to age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, and length of service as administrator) did not correlate with their emotional intelligence and work commitment levels. Furthermore, a correlation exists between emotional intelligence and work commitment, which implies that emotional intelligence is a determinant of their work commitment. Provident recommendations were given to address the studied phenomenon. Practical Implications: The study aimed to explore if emotional intelligence is a predictor of work commitment. Originality/value: This study investigates the level of intelligence and work commitment of public school administrators

    Get PDF
Purpose: The main objectives of this study were to determine the role of autonomy as a predictor of employee performance in a hospital setting in Kenya. Approach/Methodology/Design: The study was an explanatory study which offers a profile to describe relevant aspects of the phenomenon of interest to the researcher. The target population was 2000 nurses who work in Moi teaching and referral hospital Eldoret. A sample of 330 nurses was selected using simple random sampling. The research instrument used was a 5 point likert scale questionnaire. The study used questionnaires as a tool of collecting data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as tables, pie charts, One-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Findings: From the findings, the null hypothesis that states that there is no relationship between autonomy and employee performance is rejected. This is because the results of the study showed that the level of autonomy in the hospital had a high influence on employee performance (β4=0.443, P Value =0.000). Originality/value: The study findings brings out the importance of  a nation’s largest group of health professionals, nurses as they play an important role in the delivery of quality and cost effective health care. As a result of focusing on the need for nurses to work to their full potential, health care system efficiency will be optimized and retained through autonomy. This study therefore came up with autonomy strategies that can assist the leadership of the hospital to harvest to their full potential of nurses hence employee performance

Technology and Human Agency in Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron and Player Piano

    Get PDF
The present study aims to explore the intricate relationship between technology and ideology in the formation of social structures. It highlights the increasing dependence on super-advanced technology and touches upon the potential dangers associated with its manipulative use. Furthermore, this study examines the dehumanizing effects of technology highlighting how it can serve as a tool for not only imposing ideology but also eroding a character's agency. Drawing on Slavoj Zizek's theories regarding technology and agency, the profound impact of technology and ideology on human agency is addressed. To illustrate the effects of technology on society and government control, Kurt Vonnegut's short story, "Harrison Bergeron," and the novel Player Piano are analyzed. In Vonnegut's dystopian stories, the government uses technological devices to enforce ideology and manipulate characters even leading to job unemployment. Ultimately, the article achieves its three-fold objectives by examining how ideological subjects regard their unfreedom as freedom, examining the dehumanizing effects of technology as a means of ideological enforcement, and analyzing the erosion of agency of ideological subjects in a technologically advanced society governed by an oppressive regime such as the one in Harrison Bergeron and the elites in Player Piano

A Comparative study between Different Treatment Modalities of Floating Knee Jnjury At Aswan University Hospital

    Get PDF
Purpose: The study aimed at presenting a comparison between the modalities of treatment different of floating knee injury at Aswan University Hospital.  Materials and Methods:  This study is a prospective study including all of our 20 cases of floating knee injuries who were treated utilizing various treatment modalities at Aswan University Hospital between December 2018 and September 2019 with a follow-up period of 12 months  Results: Based on the data analysis,  nailing is a better modality in floating knee injury (especially with diaphyseal long bone). Moreover, plating is a good choice for distal fractures, the external fixator is considered a choice for limb saving(as in popliteal ischemia, open fractures(OG3), and compartment syndrome).  Conclusion: Management of floating knee injury is critical as floating knee injury is not like other fractures. Floating knee injuries are serious injuries with a high rate of complications. Besides being caused by high-energy trauma with extensive skeletal and soft tissue damage, they are also associated with potentially life-threatening injuries of the head, chest, and abdomen. There are multiple controversies in surgical management starting from choosing suitable fixation for each patient according to variable conditions.  Floating knee injury remains a challenging orthopedic problem in which regaining good knee function outcome is a major concern. Stable osteosynthesis to achieve rigid fixation and early mobilization should always be attempted

Cloning of the Soul and Reproduction of the Self through Space and Time with Reference to Literature and Translation

    Get PDF
Texts’ souls have been cloned and their selves reproduced. History of ideas have been passed from generation to generation and translated from one language to another. In each generation, a text represents an author’s ideas that are enclosed in a time-space frame. Representation of ideas may take another turn with the death of the author: soul cloning or self-reproduction. Between cloning and reproduction, translation stands as a reconstruction of memory and a channel through which a rebirth of texts, loaded with ideas, concepts, traditions, and cultural practices, are transmitted. Between the source text and the target, text a third text lingers in space and time waiting to be reborn.  I argue that space and time play an important role in the emergence of the ever-evolving third text giving it an identity based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope. The third text is constructed by the readers’ interpretations rather than the authors’ intentions as Roland Barthes maintains. The author is dead, the reader is there to interpret and the text floats, mutates and is reshaped through time and space
