The epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin and acts as a protective barrier between our 
body and the external environment, including solar UV radiation and pathogens. Cutaneous 
squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is cancer of the epidermal keratinocytes, the most abundant 
cell type in the epidermis. cSCC develops due to cumulative exposure to UV radiation 
throughout life. Although most cases can be effectively treated when detected early, advanced 
cSCC can spread throughout the body, is very difficult to treat, and is associated with poor 
outcomes. Abnormal cell proliferation and ability to spread (metastasis) are defining 
characteristics of tumours. My research aims at understanding how two proteins called Kindlin 1 
and Kindlin 2 regulate growth and motility in cSCC cells. My project aims at better 
understanding the characteristics of cSCC to contribute to future therapies.

Can sport events be leveraged to create social change?

Through my sport participation and work experiences at sport events, I have witnessed firsthand 
the joy sport events can bring to host communities. Sport events provide host cities the 
opportunity to leverage the events resources and create positive outcomes for local residents. 
However, positive outcomes from sport events do not occur automatically and all too often result 
in negative outcomes for the host communities instead. Positive outcomes require copious 
amounts of planning, resources, and strategic networks to ensure their sustainability. What is 
missing from research, however, is knowledge of an effective planning process for creating 
positive outcomes. The purpose of my research is to examine the ways in which sport events 
may be leveraged to create positive outcomes and to create a toolkit to help event stakeholders in 
this planning process. By addressing this gap, we can enhance the potential of future sport events 
to be catalysts for social change.

Mining the knowledge gap of Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections 
among Black youth in Canada 
 
My name is Bethelehem, and I am going into my second year of Masters in Health in 
Rehabilitation Sciences program here at Western.  
 
I am conducting a research study to help improve knowledge and understanding about 
prevention and testing for Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBIs) among 
Black youth in Canada. My goal is to find out what helps or inhibits youth in my community from 
taking preventive measures for STBBIs and to see how much this population already knows 
about these infections. I also want to understand the challenges Black youth face in accessing 
information about prevention and testing. 
 
To investigate, I will be talking to Black through interviews and focus groups. As well as 
interviews with experts including nurses, doctors and community leaders. These discussions will 
cover topics like what makes it challenging or easy to learn about STBBIs, Black youth’s 
thoughts on vaccines and treatments, and their experiences with getting information for STBBIs.  
 
The findings from my research will be important for developing strategies that can help Black 
youth in Canada better understand and prevent these diseases. It will also contribute to the 
national goal of reducing the impact of these infections in Canada by 2030.

Language and Working Memory Online Assessment Tool 
 
The relationship between linguistic ability, the ability to understand and use language, and working 
memory, where verbal information is temporarily stored, encouraged us to explore their effects on 
language performance and design an online comprehensive assessment tool that addresses both 
language ability and working memory. 
For this purpose, we modified the Token Test, a test initially created to study the ability to follow 
spoken instructions. For Token Test, individuals listen to the instructions and touch or move the 
shapes displayed to them. Our proposed systematic language and working memory Token Test 
consists of two parts. The first part assesses the working memory by employing sentences that 
gradually increase in length. The second part assesses language ability by embedding sentences of 
diverse linguistic constructions. This tool will provide a more thorough demonstration of language 
performance and help to detect developmental language disorder (DLD). DLD affects language-
related activities, such as learning.

Unveiling the Hidden Burden: Exploring Pain Disparities among Racialized Populations in Canada 
Pain is a critical indicator of population health, influencing healthcare needs, quality of life, and longevity. 
Remarkably, one in four Canadian adults experience chronic pain, yet little is known about pain disparities among 
racialized communities. Our study addresses this gap and explores how social factors, notably discrimination, 
contribute to these disparities. 
Using quantitative methods, we analyze survey data from 2020-2022, focusing on self-reported chronic pain and 
interfering pain among Canadian adults. Our initial findings reveal notable pain disparities, with distinctive patterns 
for chronic and interfering pain. Notably, Indigenous Canadians exhibit the highest prevalence of chronic pain, while 
South Asian, Black, and Indigenous Canadians experience disproportionately higher rates of interfering pain. 
By acknowledging and investigating these disparities, we endeavor to promote health equity and develop evidence-
based healthcare policies that address the unique challenges faced by racialized communities!

Have you ever wondered what your romantic partner truly thinks about you? As we move 
about our day-to-day lives, we form thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and our close others, 
and those individuals also form thoughts and beliefs about us. 
Previous research tells us that our beliefs can have a large impact on our own mental 
health and well-being. What we do not know, however, is what effect the beliefs held by our 
closest others, often our romantic partner, have on us. I am currently investigating just that; how 
someone’s beliefs about their romantic partner affect both individuals’ daily well-being. I 
suspect that the beliefs held by one’s partner may even play a role in shaping one’s own 
experience with mental illness. If such a role is found, it may serve to inform couple and 
individual mental illness treatment plans.

There’s gold in them hills: Optimizing exploration of the Troilus deposit, Quebec by 
reevaluating the mechanisms of ore deposition

Exploration Quebec’s historical Troilus deposit by the Toronto-based company Troilus Gold 
Corporation has shown tremendous potential to produce gold, copper, and silver if the mine is 
reopened. However, the deposit remains poorly understood due to metamorphism, deformation, 
structural zonation, and remobilization of metals which occurred during multiple stages of 
mineralization. As a result of this complexity, the source and distribution of metals at the Troilus 
deposit is not well understood which is an obstacle to growing the resource and reopening the 
mine. I seek to constrain the evolution of the Troilus deposit by understanding the structures and 
rock types hosting ore, the fluids they precipitated from, and the tectonic processes which 
occurred during mineralization. This work will be applied to target promising zones of 
mineralization during exploration and assist with the development of the Troilus deposit into one 
of Canada’s largest gold mines.
