Accessing Providers for Co-Occurring Health and Mental Health Disorders for Children 
and Youth in Ontario

Children and youth with life-long physical health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, 
epilepsy) are at an increased risk of developing mental health problems (e.g., anxiety, 
depression) compared to those without health conditions. While these youth and their family are 
likely to have already accessed services for their physical conditions, less is known about how 
these children and youth navigate mental health services. Are they receiving referrals from health 
specialists, general physicians, and/or other health care providers? My research seeks to 
understand how visiting a healthcare provider for a physical condition influences mental health 
service use and the types of mental health providers. I am analyzing data from the 2014 Ontario 
Child Health Study and Ontario Health Insurance Program billing data to help our understanding 
of the connection, and disconnection, between physical and mental health service delivery.

Preserving the plant partner: how copper affects plant-bacteria symbiosis 
 
Many plants form a symbiosis with soil bacteria. This mutually beneficial partnership 
provides a home for the bacteria, which in turn produce hard-to-get-nutrients and protect the 
plant from disease. Legumes like soybeans and chickpeas partner with specific bacteria called 
rhizobia that give them nitrogen. Nitrogen is an essential element for all life, but it normally exists 
in an inaccessible form. Legumes create protective nodules in their roots to house the rhizobia, 
and in return the rhizobia make the nitrogen accessible using an enzyme. This enzyme is essential 
to symbiosis but is also very sensitive to degradation by oxygen. Heavy metals like copper are 
often released into the environment. These metals may have a detrimental effect on the 
symbiosis between legumes and rhizobia because of their ability to induce oxidative stress. I am 
studying the oxidative stress caused by copper and how this affects the plant-bacteria 
partnership.

Write-Up for Inspiring Minds 2023: Embodying Guilt in Neoliberalism 
I research anti-work originating from Italian Autonomism. Today’s entrepreneurial neoliberalism 
is increasingly built on white-collar innovation replacing industrial factory production. Although 
the factory is no longer central to work, individual experience has seen a rise in productive 
efficiency exemplified by smart technology and the control of biological rhythms such as eating, 
sleep, and sex. The body must voluntarily receive sacrificial corrections to perfect the inner 
entrepreneurial self which would develop in tandem with capitalist growth. Thus, work becomes 
a way of holding the body guilty. 
The guilty body is found both in rationalist philosophy and its religious precursors. Original Sin 
informs the credit economy – individuals incur student and housing debt, work towards future 
redemption, crippling the embodied present. Disembodiment pervades online dating, designed by 
algorithmic rationality, and extends to climate collapse through ordered gentrification. I explore 
degrowth possibilities in anarchist care economies to rescue the body from its own 
financialisation. (150 words)

Facebook’s machine translation (MT) is causing significant issues that include potential
miscommunication, decline in language proficiency and spread of misinformation. This is due to
how Facebook’s MT functions automatically, with its mediation of communication invisible to
users. To address these dynamics, I created and exhibited a research-creation project to increase
awareness of Facebook's MT and the issues that arise from its interventions. My project is a
series of twelve two-dimensional artworks designed to mimic Facebook posts. Each piece has
three different layers of paper with images and texts. Two top layers incorporate machine
translated text and the image that represents the text, while the bottom layer contains the original
text and image. Installed for public audiences in the FIMS and Nursing Building on campus,
viewers are invited to touch the work, lifting each layer to compare how MT has altered the
images and text, with significant implications.

Did You Hear That? When What We Hear Influences What We Say 
Can you remember an instance when you mispronounced a word that you knew how to 
say? Did you correct yourself right after? The answer is likely yes. While this response is one of 
second nature, have you ever considered how our mind knows how to make the correction so 
readily? The answer lies in the relationship between what we hear (auditory feedback) and our 
brain’s monitoring of our speech-related muscle movements (speech motor control). While this 
relationship is important for language acquisition and exists in adulthood, it is not present at 
birth. Our research looks to establish how the relationship between speech motor control and 
auditory feedback develops throughout childhood. Specifically, we will be studying the 
responses of typically developing children to altered auditory feedback. The findings will inform 
future research on atypical development and could allow for improvements in the care provided 
to children with communication disorders.

Immigrants play a vital role in our society, contributing their diverse skills and 
enriching our communities. However, when it comes to making decisions about 
COVID-19 vaccination, their journey is far from simple. 
  A Journey of Discovery: Understanding Immigrant Perspectives 
We're embarking on an exciting study to shed light on this important issue. By 
conducting a systematic review, we'll dig deep into various databases, hunting for 
clues in articles that explore COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among immigrants. 
  Bridging the Gap: Targeted Interventions for Immigrant Communities 
Our goal? To identify the predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among 
immigrants, unlocking insights that can help us design effective strategies and 
interventions.  
Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive future for all 
individuals, regardless of their background or immigration status.

My work spans information science, philosophy, and human-computer interaction. My research
investigates how users associate and translate knowledge across domains. Part of this work
involves creating user interfaces which visualize ontologies, information organization artifacts
which describe a scientific field, in dynamic ways. When presented to users these interfaces
allow ontologies to be used not just for AI software agents but also for pedagogical tasks related
to information retrieval and knowledge generation. Ontologies are hierarchical arrangements of
concepts which describe a given field. For instance, the Gene Ontology describes the complete
human genome. The Gene Ontology is built on BFO, a top-level ontology which makes it
interoperable with other biomedical ontologies. However, for achieving ontology alignment, tools
which allow users to make mappings between ontologies are necessary, in order to establish
isomorphisms between scientific fields. My work investigates how people make these
isomorphisms and how they understand what the mappings mean.

Fanfiction: how copyright violation can benefit brands 
 
Every year, hundreds of thousands of stories are published on Fanfiction websites. 
These stories deepen fan relationships with beloved media franchises by letting 
them return to the characters, settings, and plots they love. Brands have not always 
recognized this, and in some cases have pursued copyright claims against fanfiction 
authors, who are disproportionately LGBTQ+. In my research, I use large scale data 
sets to demonstrate that removing this legal threat spurs increased fanfiction 
production. Additionally, my experimental work shows that reading fanfiction can 
increase purchase intent for future brand products, which suggests that brand 
antagonism to fanfiction authors may be misguided. My goal is to bring attention to 
fanfiction as a form of consumer engagement that has been largely overlooked in 
the marketing literature, and to bridge the gap between the humanities and 
quantitative marketing research.

Two Australian Composers, Two Sonatas, Two Canadian Pianists 
Sonatas for piano four hands (two pianists, one piano) fell out of favour with composers 
and pianists in the twentieth century. In 2009 and 2013 respectively, contemporary 
Australian composers Carl Vine and Stuart Greenbaum each resurrected this neglected 
genre with new visions for its compositional and performance value. This research 
includes in-depth theoretical analysis and a public performance of each composer’s 
Sonata for Piano Four Hands. The analyses through formal, motivic, rhythmic, 
harmonic, textural, narrative-based, and performance-related perspectives demonstrate 
the compositional worth of this undervalued genre, and the recital will be the Canadian 
premiere for both works. Vine and Greenbaum have different compositional ethos and 
technique, the former insisting upon pure music and the latter using a highly narrative 
approach. These two works make excellent companions for analysis and performance, 
showcasing in unique ways the full pianistic, compositional, and emotional expression 
available through the four hands genre in this century.
