My research tackles a critical problem in Canadian healthcare: many young children who need 
speech therapy face long waitlists, missing the chance to get therapy when it is most effective. 
One solution is a “tiered service model”, a system where children receive progressively more 
focused services based on their needs and adjusted over time. Tiered service models have 
improved wait times and service capacity for other therapy services in schools. However, they 
have yet to be adapted for speech therapy services in preschool healthcare settings. My research 
aims to figure out the best way to apply such a system within the context of Ontario’s Preschool 
Speech and Language program. By reviewing existing research on tiered services and gathering 
input from speech therapy service coordinators, I aim to create an evidence-based framework 
that could help more children get the support they need at the right time.

How do our brains process and perceive audiovisual information?  
 
To exist within our dynamic world, we are dependent on our brain's ability to process, 
integrate, and then perceive sensory information. Interestingly, our perception is highly 
malleable, constantly shifting to accommodate our current environment. At present, 
however, we do not understand how the brain can merge multiple sensory modalities, 
such as auditory and visual, into a single percept that is capable of adapting to our 
surroundings. 
 
My graduate work focuses on how our brains process and perceive auditory and visual 
information (i.e., audiovisual processing and perception). Using advanced neuroscience 
techniques to record and manipulate neurons in behaving animal models, we aim to 
parse apart the cells and circuits responsible for audiovisual processing and perception. 
We hope to not only better understand how sensory perception manifests in mammalian 
brains, but also why it may become disrupted in some clinical populations such as 
autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

Self-Driving or Self-Danger? 
In today’s fast-paced world, imagine grabbing your double-double at Tim Hortons and letting 
a driverless Tesla take you to work. Sounds exciting—but would you really trust it? Tesla’s Full 
Self-Driving(FSD) system includes features like automated lane changes and signal 
handling, yet past incidents and studies reveal serious flaws, including fatal crashes. My 
research tackles this gap by building a Time-To-Materialization(TTM) model to enhance 
safety in autonomous vehicles. While Advanced Driver Assistance Systems(ADAS) offer 
collision warnings and lane keeping, questions remain: when is a situation truly “risky” or 
“dangerous”? For example, is running a red light more dangerous than suddenly switching 
lanes without signaling? This project dives into such questions using real-world driving 
data—vehicle movement, driver gaze, and object detection to predict hazardous moments. 
By linking risk to behavior and environment, my model aims to make smarter decisions and 
move us closer to truly safe, trustworthy self-driving cars.

Contemporary Indigenous literature in the Americas has become a powerful space of 
resistance and cultural affirmation. My research explores how Quichua writers in 
Ecuador use literature to revitalize language, reclaim memory, and challenge colonial 
narratives. A new wave of writers is crafting poetry and fiction in both Quichua and 
Spanish, expressing collective aspirations and cultural resilience. By connecting literary 
analysis with decolonial theory and Indigenous epistemologies, I aim to highlight how 
this literature affirms cultural identity and fosters self-determination. Drawing on my 
lived experience as a Quichua teacher and community member, I will compile and 
analyze contemporary texts, including written and oral forms. This project uplifts 
emerging Indigenous voices and contributes to broader conversations on cultural 
survival, resistance, and knowledge justice.

Sport as a public emergency: The case for basic humanitarian standards in sport 
Sport is widely considered an “internalist” practice. This means that the goings-on within the practice of 
sport are in some significant sense “apart from” rather than fully “a part of” society more broadly. This 
coupled with the fact that there are many situations deemed ethically acceptable within the context of 
sport that are decidedly unacceptable within normal social situations (e.g. punching someone in the 
head is acceptable in boxing but decidedly not so at a neighbourhood café) leads to the conclusion that 
sport is a space where the normal rules of society do not (always) apply. In this sense, sport, like a 
natural or human-made disaster, constitutes a “state of emergency”. Whereas international agreements 
on basic humanitarian standards attempt to ensure that risk of harm is managed, and human dignity 
maintained, during various forms of disaster, my research asks whether similar standards could and 
indeed should be applied to sport.

How excited is your brain for pain?: Combined TMS-EEG during acute muscle pain 
 
Pain is a universal human experience, from minor discomfort to severe debilitation, yet its 
underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Effective, non-pharmacological pain 
management remains elusive, especially amid concerns over opioid use. A promising approach 
lies in studying pain at the cortical level, where brain plasticity can influence how pain is 
detected, interpreted, and even maintained into chronicity. My research uses advanced concurrent 
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) with 
neuronavigation to explore how the brain responds in-real-time to acute muscle pain in healthy 
individuals. Particularly, I assess cortical excitability (i.e., how responsive the brain is) before, 
during, and after pain in both male and female volunteers. These findings will provide new 
insights into how brain activity is modulated during pain and how such changes may relate to 
pain perception, helping to explain individual differences in sensitivity and uncovering potential 
sex differences.

Collaboration has been suggested as a way to manage the increasing complexities of the 
healthcare system. It has been shown to have benefits for patients, healthcare 
professionals and the healthcare system. Research on collaboration tends to focus on the 
general principles or specific tools to enhance collaboration but there is less research on 
how these components come together in practice settings.  
For people with atypical parkinsonism, a group of neurodegenerative conditions with no 
cure, a team approach is the best practice recommendation to manage symptoms. My 
research project focuses on the lived experience of healthcare professionals working in a 
unique interprofessional clinic for people with atypical parkinsonism where a team of 
healthcare professionals work with a patient and their caregiver in the same room at the 
same time.  If we understand the impact of different models of collaborative care, we can 
more effectively reap the benefits of working together.

Bridging Cultures Through Music: Exploring the ‘Neither Here Nor There’ Identities of 
Ghanaian Third Culture Kids Living in Canada 
What happens when music becomes more than sound, when it becomes a way of remembering, 
negotiating, and becoming? As a Ghanaian living in Canada, I noticed how many young people 
of Ghanaian descent felt disconnected from their heritage, even when surrounded by it. This 
study explores how music functions as a cultural bridge, allowing Ghanaian Third Culture Kids 
(TCKs) to engage with their heritage while negotiating their place in Canadian society. These 
children live between worlds, shaped by both the Ghanaian culture of their families and the 
Canadian culture of their everyday lives. Through collaborative music, artworks, and 
performance, participants creatively explore their hybrid selves. Despite their complex cultural 
journeys, Ghanaian TCKs remain underrepresented in TCK research, and their experiences offer 
vital insights into identity, heritage, and belonging. My research is not just about the music they 
hear, but how they hear themselves in it through creativity, self-discovery, and community.

HIV stigma remains a significant barrier to effective HIV prevention in Canada. Racialized 
immigrants and structurally exposed groups remain disproportionately affected by new HIV 
infections due to institutional and policy neglect whereby public health strategies have largely 
failed to address the unique socio-structural barriers faced by immigrant communities including 
language barriers, lack of culturally competent care, fear of criminalization for HIV non-
disclosure, and potential deportation. Also, the persistent HIV stigma and heightened vulnerability 
of these populations to new HIV infections stem from a confluence of factors including racism, 
systemic discrimination, precarious immigration status, unequal healthcare access, and lack of 
culturally sensitive HIV care. Nonetheless, significant knowledge-practice gap exists relating to 
HIV stigma reduction among racialized in Canada. This study evaluates the cultural 
appropriateness, effectiveness, adoptability, and sustainability of an evidenced-based HIV stigma 
reduction intervention in two provinces (Ontario and Alberta) of Canada, known as Acceptance 
and Commitment to Empowerment (ACE).
