Tracing the Genealogy of Urdu Crime Fiction in the Indian sub-continent 
 
My research explores how crime and detective fiction can impact, and, in some cases, 
anticipate contemporary forensic trends. During late 19th and early 20th century, translations of 
Sherlock Holmes became popular in the Indian sub-continent, and a string of Urdu transcreations 
and pseudo-forensic manuals, pertaining to the study of the criminal mind, followed in their wake. 
These early trends in crime fiction led to a deep interest in the working of the police force in 
colonial India, and in many cases, law enforcement agencies relied on fictional crimes and their 
solutions for help in solving real world crimes.  
My research focuses on tracing the genealogy of Urdu detective fiction and the possible 
reasons for its popularity, and looks for a possible correlation between a changing socio-economic 
climate and the popularity of Urdu detective fiction.

 Improving Efficiency and Confidence through Mental Practice: A Guide for Music 
 Educators 
 Nearly everyone has given up learning something at some point because it was inconvenient, 
 and nearly everyone has experienced some form of performance anxiety. What if we could 
 improve our skills in a way that increased the convenience and efficiency of our practice and 
 boost confidence at the same time? By engaging in mental practice, we simulate physically 
 practicing in our mind without the need for instruments, equipment, or facilities. This can have 
 huge benefits to learning. 
 My work will consolidate and clarify existing research, so that music teachers can find the most 
 optimal practice routines for improving their students’ musical skills and maximizing their 
 efficiency when they have limited physical practice time. This will help not only current 
 musicians, but also many people who might otherwise quit to continue enjoying playing music 
 (and improve their performing skills), with associated benefits for mental health, lifelong 
 learning, and community building.

 I am enrolled in the  Music Cognition  collaborative  specialization, which was not listed as an 
 option, but provided the inspiration and foundation for my submitted work. The specialization 
 coordinator (also the professor who oversaw my initial work on this project) is Dr. Jonathan De

 course-based and not research-based, which is why I did not list him as such in my submission.

Burnout among New Graduate Nurses (NGNs)- Are we ready to take the load? 
New Graduate Nurses are considered frontline health care providers, asset of the nursing 
profession and represent the future of nursing profession. During my clinical experiences, I have 
noticed that final-year graduating students feel exhausted during their clinicals, and they were 
scared of being infected with Covid-19, during pandemic. The impact of COVID-19 on NGNs 
has depicted through mental stress, insecurity, increased workload with extended duty hours, 
higher incidences of patient mortality, and burnout which affects their mental, physical, and 
psychological well-being (Lai et al., 2020). Moreover, NGN currently experience burnout during 
their transition from student to NGN. They are susceptible to negative attitudes and unrealistic 
expectations which leads to burnout. Hence, it is imperative that NGNs physical, mental, and 
psychological health must be appropriate for the betterment of their patients. The study findings 
hope to provide a platform for the institutions to take appropriate measures to reduce burnout 
among NGNs.

From Stardust to Life: Exploring Molecules in the
Cosmos

Why did the molecules throw a party in space?
Because they wanted to have an "out of this world" bonding experience!
All molecules we have in our bodies were formed somewhere out there in the Universe.
Studying molecules in space is our opportunity to answer fundamental questions like how stars
are formed and how life originated. I study molecules in a particular region - clouds of gas and
dust between the stars. The molecules in there absorb the starlight, causing distinct absorption
signals. Although these bands were first detected in 1919, their exact molecular origins remain
largely unknown, except for C+60. Out of more than 500 bands that are already detected, we
know the origins of only five. My research narrow down the list of possible molecules until
we find an exact match. I do that by carefully examining the absorption signals. The shapes of
those signals are associated with how molecules move in space (rotate and vibrate), and thus
those shapes are a gateway to understanding what kind of molecule is responsible. I will soon
know what is the size of the molecules and what it looks like.

 What might motivate corporate leaders to increase their financial investments in 
corporate environmental responsibility (CER) initiatives? Although many interventions might 
inspire leaders to invest in such initiatives, my research will explore whether leaders who 
undergo a mindfulness meditation intervention will be more likely to invest in CER initiatives 
than leaders in a control condition. As part of the methodology, I will recruit students who will 
play the role of a corporate leader of a fictitious organization. After these leaders undergo the 
mindfulness intervention, I will ask them to complete a budget allocation task; they will be 
asked to invest money in various business initiatives, including CER initiatives. Thus far, 
research confirms that participation in a mindfulness meditation intervention increases one’s 
propensity to engage in eco-friendly behaviours (e.g., recycling). As such, I expect leaders who 
undergo the intervention to invest more in CER initiatives than those who do not.

In times when global media reportage appears oversaturated with visuals of human conflicts 
and catastrophes, how can the documentary image generate new modes of situating political 
violence? My research engages with contemporary forms, processes, and conversations in 
documentary practices that devise inventive frameworks for addressing socio-political injustice 
and human rights violations. The nature of political violence, as I consider it, is not limited to 
spectacularly aggressive manifestations in public spaces. It involves a range of unspectacular 
phenomena affecting personal relationships, psychic states, identity concerns, and other 
quotidian realities. I am interested in how contemporary practitioners are reimagining the 
generic tenets of the documentary medium to examine these subliminal terrains. My project 
seeks to employ curatorial approaches as methodological tools for research and pedagogy, 
which will foster inclusive community participation involving art practitioners, writers, 
curators, archivists, and scholars in the field.

Title: Guided Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Adults with Tinnitus in 
Ontario: A Randomized Controlled Trial 
Tinnitus is the perception of sound such as ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring or grinding noise 
without an external, sound producing source. About 43% of Canadians aged 16-79 years usually 
experience tinnitus in their lifetime. The prevalence rate increases with age, which is of great 
concern with an increasing aging population in Canada.  
Studies have shown that tinnitus has debilitating psychological effects such as depression, anxiety, 
stress, insomnia, poor concentration and cognitive dysfunction which significantly impacts quality 
of life and inflicts socioeconomic and healthcare economic burdens on the individual.  
My current study will seek to investigate how effective guided internet-delivered cognitive 
behavioural therapy will be in the long-term treatment of chronic tinnitus among adults in Ontario 
in a randomized controlled trial.  
The results of this research will establish a cost effective, easily accessible and an effective long-
term treatment for tinnitus to help improve the overall quality of life of tinnitus patients.

Online self-disclosure encompasses any messages about the self (e.g., 
experiences, thoughts, personal needs, and observations) that a person purposefully 
conveys to others online. Disclosing personal information online can yield benefits 
for individuals, such as maintaining existing relationships and establishing new 
ones. Being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing number of young 
adults aged between 18 and 29 are suffering from psychological distress, with over 
90% of Canadian post-secondary students reporting high levels of stress and 
symptoms of anxiety and depression.  
My research aims to longitudinally investigate the online self-disclosure 
behavior of distressed post-secondary students and evaluate its impact on their 
well-being. By observing their online disclosure behavior, I will explore whether it 
directly affects their positive or negative well-being. The findings will seek to 
identify effective online self-disclosure skills that can potentially improve the 
mental health of young adults.

Title: Gastronomy & Peace  
 
My research proposes a novel connection between peace and gastronomy. My goal is to create 
a model which shows how peace can be built through gastronomy based on the relevance of 
food systems and the power of everyday practice to advance peacebuilding and Sustainable 
Development Goals agendas. The model will be designed by analyzing how to strengthen 
relationships among actors across different food systems stages at different levels to strengthen 
mutually beneficial relations that foster positive socio-economic and political change. Colombia 
will be used as a case study to demonstrate why food systems have the potential to advance 
peacebuilding, and what the potential benefits of advancing peacebuilding through gastronomy 
are. My research outcomes will serve as a compass for NGOs, international organizations, 
governments, and even inspire social responsibility offices to implement projects or programs 
with an interdisciplinary and creative cut centred on enduring sustainability and environmentally 
conscious efforts.

According to Speech-Language and Audiology Canada, hearing impairment is the third most 
common chronic disability observed in older adults. Hearing Aids (HAs) form the most common 
rehabilitation option for a majority of hearing loss configurations. The performance of HAs in 
challenging noisy and reverberant environments, and the measurements of HA speech 
intelligibility, speech quality, and loudness are of paramount importance for clinical Audiologists, 
hearing aid researchers and development engineers. My research addresses these issues and 
endeavours to make the following contributions: (a) development and validation of a multi-task 
machine learning model that can simultaneously predict the intelligibility, quality, and loudness 
from the HA output alone; (b) development and validation of a machine learning model that 
enhances speech in challenging communication environments; and (c) implementation of the 
developed speech enhancement model within a portable assistive hearing platform, and its 
evaluation by listeners with hearing loss.
