THE ARTISTS 
 
Jennifer Cyr, soprano, is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal 
Performance at Western University. Jennifer is an avid performer who was selected as 
one of eight Canadian singers to embark on a concert tour of China. While in China, 
Jennifer performed Western opera arias and ensembles as well as traditional Chinese 
folk songs in ten cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin, and Kunming. Jennifer 
recently performed in Western Opera’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro as Contessa 
Almaviva. 
 
Jennifer’s past operatic roles include Donna Anna from Don Giovanni by Mozart, Suor 
Angelica from Suor Angelica by Puccini, the Governess in The Turn of the Screw by 
Britten, Musetta from La Bohème by Puccini, Antonia from Les Contes D’Hoffmann by 
Offenbach, Micaela from Carmen by Bizet, and Pamina from Die Zauberflöte by Mozart. 
Jennifer has been fortunate to work with many wonderful opera programs and 
companies including Vancouver Opera, La Musica Lirica, the Accademia Europea 
dell’Opera, the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, ViVace, the Centre for Opera Studies 
in Italy, Opera Nuova, and Opera on the Avalon. 
 
 
Samantha Lee is a pianist from Markham who completed her Masters in Literature and 
Performance at University of Western Ontario as John Hess’ student. In pursuing her 
music career, she has received an Honours Bachelor of Music degree and Chamber 
Music Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University. Samantha has participated in several 
concerts and festivals, including the Kiwanis Festival, Newmarket Lions Music Festival 
and the WLU concerto competition. She enjoys collaborating with musicians in 
auditions, concerts and summer programs, such as the Vancouver International Song 
Institute, Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, Orford Academy, and the Elora Festival 
Academy of Music. 
 
 
Clarinetist Catherine Fraser holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and a Master of 
Music degree from Arizona State University where she studied with Robert Spring and 
Joshua Gardner, worked as a Teaching Assistant, and did research on wellness for 
musicians. Catherine earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Western University 
where she studied with Marie Johnson. She enjoys musical collaborations and exploring 
new music.

Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano 
I find that the experience of getting to know someone can be quite fascinating. The people that I 
interact with always influence me in some way. There are four movements in this piece, and each 
movement is a representation of my memories of a particular person or a group of people. I’ve recalled 
their personalities, and tried to portray them in my music. The piece is a narrative, expressing with love 
or regret, the time I have spent with these people.  
 
Caretaker of Collection 
Nearing the end of a piece. Throughout there’s this elaborated succession of phrases with ending notes 
that are determined by a sequence of descending pitches.  
 
Nearing the end of it I'm writing out these held tones that have a written out slowing down rhythm. Get 
to the end and think “oh I wonder what it'd be like if I made the points in the line where they slow down 
that sequence of pitches from earlier”. Go back and check, it's already that sequence in reverse without 
even trying.

Annual Chamber Groups and Student Composers Gala

The London Music Scholarship Foundation
The London Music Scholarship Foundation (LMSF) has 
supported excellence in performance at the Don Wright Faculty 
of Music at Western University for more than two decades.
LMSF was founded by a group of Londoners who loved 
music. When the provincial government offered a matching 
grant program in 1997, the group donated their funds to 
the university. Interest from the scholarship fund provides 
scholarships for the finalists and expenses of the competition. 
We thank Bessie and Joe McManus, Guy Lombardo, Healey 
Willan and all donors who supported the LMSF Fund.
Western maintains a fundamental commitment to ensure 
that all qualified students are able to attend the program of 
their choice regardless of financial circumstances. The Don 
Wright Faculty of Music is committed to raising $1.1 million to 
support scholarships and awards for music students. Award

Sankofa 
Sankofa is a word in the Twi 
language of Ghana that translates 
to “Go back and get it” and also 
refers to the Asante Adinkra 
symbol represented either with a 
stylized heart shape or by a bird 
with its head turned backwards 
while its feet face forward carrying 
a precious egg in its mouth. 
Sankofa is often associated 
with the proverb, “Se wo were fi 
na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which 
translates as “It is not wrong to 
go back for that which you have 
forgotten.”
