In modern societies, emerging adults aged 18-25 are particularly at risk for mental health issues, 
including those related to body weight. While it is known that such issues can be harmful for 
their mental health, the role of social media use has not been fully studied. Since social media is 
widely used among young people, it can play a major role in how they perceive and feel about 
themselves and others. Therefore, my research uses an online survey explore how social media 
affects the relationship between self-perceived weight status and mental health problems in 
university students aged 18-25. Additionally, I aim to use this research to help find potential 
solutions for young adults to navigate through these challenges, while also looking at differences 
in this population such as ethnicity, age, gender, and relationship status to help find specific 
insights that could lead to better support and interventions.

You’ve whipped up a delicious cake and the beater is dripping with batter. What do you do? Lick it? 
Think again. Poultry eggs and meat are a common source of Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause 
gut-churning consequences. Poultry pose a significant concern as they can harbour large amounts 
of Salmonella without showing any symptoms, making it difficult to identify contaminated birds. 
While numerous control measures can be used on poultry farms to prevent Salmonella 
contamination, they are often costly and/or difficult to implement. Therefore, my goal is to develop 
a ‘green’ vaccine: an edible Salmonella vaccine that is made in plants. This would provide a 
cheaper and easier method of protecting poultry, as the leaves of the plant could be ground into a 
powder and added to poultry feed. If effective, this could reduce the prevalence of Salmonella in 
poultry flocks and subsequently lower the rate of human infection.

Examining the predictors of response to ICBT for tinnitus treatment outcomes: A 
secondary analysis of intervention study 
Tinnitus, a condition characterized by the perception of sound without an external source, affects 
10-20% of the global population and 43% of Canadian adults. Despite various management 
strategies, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) remains the most effective for reducing tinnitus 
distress. Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ICBT) offers increased accessibility 
for the diverse tinnitus population.  
This study aims to identify predictors of response to ICBT among tinnitus patients in Canada 
through secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial. Predictors such as 
demographic factors, tinnitus-related variables, and clinical characteristics will be examined. 
Primary outcomes will be assessed using the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), while secondary 
outcomes will measure insomnia, anxiety, depression, hearing disability, life satisfaction, and 
cognitive function.  
The study expects to identify significant predictors affecting ICBT treatment outcomes, 
facilitating the triaging of patients to the most suitable interventions and enhancing the efficacy 
of tinnitus management.

Quantifying seismic response of helical pile-supported bridges using machine learning 
 
Bridges are vital links in transportation networks, especially in regions prone to earthquakes. This research 
explores the potential of helical piles, known for their efficient installation and minimal soil disturbance, to 
demonstrate their use in highway bridge foundations. By evaluating different helical pile configurations and bridge 
geometries through thousands of numerical analyses, we assess their effectiveness under seismic conditions. The aim 
is to train a machine learning model that can predict the seismic damage to bridges equipped with helical piles 
immediately following an earthquake. This predictive capability is crucial for rapid assessment and response, enabling 
quicker decision-making, potentially reducing the impact of seismic events on critical infrastructure, and aiding 
engineers and decision-makers in determining whether bridges are safe for public or emergency use and in executing 
post-earthquake rehabilitation operations.

In vivo neuromelanin imaging in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: Elucidating

Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) exhibit restrictive and repetitive 
behaviours (RRBs), which are deemed pathological when they interfere with learning, 
socialization, and adaptive functioning. Although prior work implicates the catecholaminergic 
system in RRBs, the underlying pathophysiology of RRBs remains largely misunderstood.  
 
Recent advancements in neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI), has 
offered a unique and non-invasive way to examine dopamine and norepinephrine concentrations 
in human midbrain structures, reflected in neuromelanin signal changes in the substantia nigra 
and locus coeruleus. Using this novel neuroimaging technique, our goal is to probe midbrain 
dopamine and norepinephrine functioning in children with and without NDDs to elucidate the 
underlying pathophysiology of RRBs.  
 
Exploring the utility of NM-MRI in characterizing RRBs may help to identify early diagnostic 
biomarkers, novel neuropharmalogical intervention targets, and predictors for treatment 
response, with the goal of improving quality of life among children with NDDs.

My research focuses on the decarbonization of Canada’s residential sector by integrating 
renewable resources with mechanical systems. The methodology of my research utilizes 
solar photovoltaic (PV) to run heat pumps, supplying heating/cooling and hot water 
demands of residential houses. It is the focus because residential heating/cooling and 
hot water demand accounts for approximately 80% of the total energy demand in 
Canadian homes. This PV+HP system stores excess energy in a thermal battery. This 
strategic integration bolsters the system's reliability and energy storage capabilities, 
thereby enhancing both the self-sufficiency and self-consumption rates of the solar PV 
setup. My preliminary results show that the PV+HP system achieves a self-sufficiency 
rate of 30.6% and a self-consumption rate of 30.2%. Further, my research explores the 
cumulative benefits of integrating PV, heat pumps, and thermal batteries, aiming to 
develop a comprehensive solution to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Did You Hear That? Responses to Altered Auditory Feedback in Children 
Our brains use the sound of our voice to monitor the coordination of the movements of our 
mouths while we speak. This relationship between auditory feedback (how we hear ourselves when 
we speak) and speech motor control (the brain’s monitoring of speech-related muscles movements) 
is important in speech acquisition as it plays a key role in identifying and correcting speech errors. 
This relationship has been studied in adulthood, but current research is limited as to how it 
establishes itself in childhood.  
We are studying responses to altered auditory feedback (i.e., simulating a speech error) in 
180 2-13 year-old children to determine when this relationship becomes evident in children. We 
are also interested in whether the development of this relationship is related to other areas such as 
cognition or language. Our findings will inform future research on this topic and could improve 
the care provided to children with communication disorders.

Separately, listening to music and reminiscing on events from one’s own life often conjure up 
emotions. Together, these activities could rely on those emotions to forge the uniquely vivid and 
complex connection between them, giving rise to the phenomenon of music-evoked 
autobiographical memories (MEAMs). Surprisingly, older adults with emotion recognition and 
memory deficits caused by various degrees of cognitive decline still generate MEAMs. One of 
the most obvious examples of this is when those with Alzheimer’s Disease “come back to life” 
while listening to familiar or personally significant music. My research seeks to better 
understand the emotional mechanism driving MEAMs. Inspired by my personal interest in the 
field of music therapy, studying this phenomenon in older adults with and without mild cognitive 
impairment might inform music therapists’ work with clients for whom memory and identity 
preservation is a treatment goal.

Graduate Training in Applied Behaviour Analysis: Interprofessional Collaboration 
 
Interventions based on applied behaviour analysis (ABA) are among the most effective 
in achieving positive outcomes for individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities, 
yielding improvements in adaptive behaviour, social skills, and communication skills. 
Behaviour analysts, who are among the most qualified to administer ABA-based 
interventions, are often expected to collaborate with professionals from multidisciplinary 
backgrounds during the provision of their services. Unfortunately, it’s unclear whether 
graduate training is adequately preparing behaviour analysts to work alongside non-
ABA professionals when supporting clients. 
 
Through quantitative and qualitative methods, my research examines the quantity and 
quality of training that students receive in interprofessional collaboration competencies 
within ABA graduate programs across Canada and the USA. Findings from my research 
will aid in establishing an up-to-date benchmark for graduate training standards in ABA. 
This is essential to improving the quality of services provided by behaviour analysts, 
which in turn will result in greater service outcomes for clients.
