Law Reform for Sexual Violence Survivors 
 
The criminal justice system (CJS) is failing in its efforts to combat sexual violence, a fact 
reflected by the extremely low reporting rates of sexual violence to police.  The need to address 
this serious access to justice problem, a problem experienced predominantly by women, 
motivated me, a former Crown prosecutor, to pursue law reform through my PhD studies.  
 
My research, which is interdisciplinary, incorporating both theoretical perspectives and imperial 
data, focuses on the need to change the policies and practices that govern how complainants of 
sexual violence are treated by the CJS. I argue that the current treatment violates women’s 
human and Charter rights. I also suggest that state-funded legal counsel for sexual violence 
complainants would mitigate many harms complainants experience and provide them with the 
empowerment and voice they currently lack.

The role of body-related self-evaluations and emotions in the development of self-concept in 
adolescent girls 
 
In Western cultures that emphasize narrowly defined appearance and beauty ideals, the 
body is central to how adolescents define their concept of self. This is of particular concern for 
girls because the onset of puberty entails physical changes in the body (e.g., weight gain) that 
often move girls further away from the socially defined and often unrealistic idealized female 
physique. Researchers have posited that these negative evaluations of the body drastically 
undermine girls’ global evaluations of the self. Yet, research linking physical self-evaluations 
(e.g., “I am a strong person”) and higher order evaluations of the self (e.g., “I am a worthwhile 
person”) is scarce and has exclusively been limited to cross-sectional designs and trait-level 
measures. As such, the overall purpose of my program of research is to longitudinally examine 
the temporal development and reciprocal relations between girls’ self-evaluations, self-concept, 
and global self-worth during adolescence.

Sleep is an essential human occupation. Yet, the majority of shift workers obtain 
insufficient sleep, negatively impacting key cognitive functions required for driving. 
While shift workers represent approximately one-in-three Canadian workers, they carry 
a disproportionate burden of injury and fatality arising from motor vehicle crashes. My 
doctoral research engages multiple methods to examine the impact of insufficient sleep 
on driving performance in healthcare shift workers. I use both in-depth interviews to 
explore shift workers’ lived experiences of sleepy driving; and, online questionnaires 
and remote data collection methods quantify differences in sleep, sleepiness, and 
driving events between healthcare workers on rotating shifts versus standard day work 
schedules. My passion for this research stems from my clinical occupational therapy 
rehabilitation practice focused on adults seriously injured in motor vehicle collisions. 
Through this research, my goal is to better understand shift workers’ driving 
performance and inform strategies to enhance road safety for all.

Concrete water reducers are essential components of building materials applied widely in the 
construction industry today. They decrease the amount of water required during concrete 
preparation to improve its workability, durability, and strength. Presently, majority of concrete 
water reducers in the market are produced from petroleum derived synthetic materials which 
pose both health and environmental challenges. The few available bio-based concrete water 
reducers are produced from lignin, a complex bioresource which requires multi-stage processing 
to obtain the final product. Also, there has been limited study on the production of concrete 
water reducer from cellulose which is considered the most abundant lignocellulosic 
biomaterial. My research focused on the production of a bio-based concrete water reducer by 
dual chemical functionalization and modification of crude cellulose obtained from solvent 
fractionated mixed saw dust. It investigated and optimized the product synthesis conditions and 
measured its performance relative to a commercial concrete water reducer.

Geography and astronomy are separate fields with strong similarities. Through our research, we 
take advantage of this connection by applying geographical spatial analysis methods to 
astronomical digital imagery, such as the multispectral images from Hubble Space Telescope. Here 
we use machine learning to classify galactic components within nearby spiral galaxies by training 
the computer to identify specific areas within an image. These galaxies are particularly interesting 
as they have both spatial and temporal patterns of stellar populations and other phenomena, which 
are critical components in both astronomy and geography. By classifying galactic components in 
nearby spiral galaxies, we can apply our findings about the distribution of galactic components to 
more distant spiral galaxies that we cannot observe in detail, and for better understanding of the 
origin and evolution of the universe.

Health Providers Perspectives on the Access and Use of Formal Health and Social Services by Stroke 
Caregivers 
 
Informal stroke caregivers, comprised of family and friends, can experience prolonged stress that 
places them at risk of poor health and social outcomes. These caregivers may benefit from 
formal health and social services, but they are often underused and inaccessible. This qualitative 
study sought to explore health providers’ perspectives on the factors that impact stroke 
caregivers' access and use of formal health and social services. In-depth, semi-structured 
interviews were conducted with 18 health providers. Resultant themes include, health system 
fragmentation contributes to a lack of continuity of care; gaps in health providers' knowledge and 
heavy workloads negatively impact service accessibility; persons living with stroke and their 
caregivers are inextricably linked, but caregivers need be recognized as individuals; providing a 
single access point for follow-up is essential for success. Health providers are critical 
stakeholders due to their rich understanding of this issue, highlighting the importance of their 
involvement in caregiver initiatives.

People with hearing loss often experience effort while listening to speech. Despite the 
importance of motivation in speech comprehension, current studies of listening effort use 
disconnected, uninteresting listening stimuli. If listeners are not motivated to engage with 
listening, then the measure of listening effort obtained may not be representative of real-world 
listening. I plan to use spoken stories as listening materials to gain an ecologically valid, 
continuous measure of listening engagement in children. Children with normal hearing aged 9-12 
will listen to a story while engaging in a secondary task requiring quick response to a visual 
stimulus. The more engaged a child is in the story, the fewer cognitive resources available to 
attend to the secondary task, and the longer they will take to respond. Reaction times will be 
combined across participants to index engagement across the story, providing the first 
continuous measure of listening engagement in children.

Governments are expected to address many issues, from delivering essential services to 
legislating on abortion. How do governments decide which policy issues to prioritize? My 
research examines the role that politics, particularly party ideology and party systems, plays in 
setting the policy agendas of provincial governments. Policy scholars argue that agenda setting is 
largely apolitical and driven by external factors, such as crises. Yet, provincial agendas are set by 
executives formed by a single, disciplined political party with few institutional checks on power. 
Parties have historically and socially rooted positions on policy issues that are hard to break. I 
assemble a new dataset that maps changes to the ideology of provincial parties from 1945-2020 
using party manifestos. I then use this data to examine how party positions influence the 
governing priorities laid out in Speeches from the Throne, which open the start of every sitting of 
legislative assemblies.

Reducing Residual Motion and Noise from Myocardial Perfusion for Assessment of 
Coronary Artery Disease using Deep Learning 
 
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) occurs when coronary artery(ies) become blocked or narrower, 
lowering the blood supply to the heart. CAD is assessed/scored based on how much the arteries 
became narrower as compared to their average healthy size. The CT imaging technique that offers 
foundation for this scoring is known as Myocardial Perfusion Reserve (MPR).  
 
Although MPR can successfully detect and score the CAD, it often deals with noise and residual 
motion. MPR uses low-dose radiation as the myocardium is radio sensitive. But when the radiation 
is low, the constructed image is noisy. Besides, in MPR, the images are taken over a period so if 
the patient moves or the organ has motion itself, then the time point images have residual motion. 
These problems make CAD scoring a challenging problem.  
 
Our target is to solve these two optimization problems, denoising and registration, together as one 
shot using Deep Learning.

When a resource has a better metadata in general it tends to be more valuable, but our
theory guides what metadata we record. Current cataloguing theory conceives of texts as
instances of essential ‘works.’ However, just as organisms inherit genes from their ancestors,
texts actually inherit memes from their antecedents. The transition from Lnnaean to Phylogenetic
taxonomy in biology suggests an analogous paradigm shift for library cataloguing.
By modelling meme-flow between texts, new forms of bibliographic arrangement and
organization become possible. This Phylomemetic Catalogue would allow users to create links
between the catalogue records, adding meaningful connections. By collecting these connections
library catalogues could include family trees or clades of texts.
This opens the possibility of new types of visualizations and even novel user
collaboration in catalogues. A catalogue based on a Phylomemetic paradigm could implement a
level of consilience, allowing conflicting perspectives about a text to be productively unified.
