Examining the effectiveness of More Than Words: A parent-mediated intervention for 
preschoolers with autism 
For preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), social communication skills are 
often impaired, impeding their ability to interact with others. My research is in partnership with 
the Hanen Centre and their program More Than Words®, which provides parents of preschoolers 
with ASD strategies to support the development of their child’s social communication skills. 
Each year there are an estimated 15,000-21,000 families around the world that participate in this 
program. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the entire delivery of this program has moved 
to the virtual environment. Through analyzing parent experiences in and the effectiveness of the 
virtual More Than Words® program, I will be able to provide a program evaluation and 
recommendations for quality improvements. An effective virtual program will allow families 
who live in rural and remote communities to have access to this program even beyond the current 
pandemic.

Is There a Secret Recipe to Choosing the Right Cofounder? 
 
Perhaps you have a brilliant entrepreneurial idea but recognize you can’t pull it off alone. Who will 
be the Woz to your Jobs? Choosing a cofounder is a highly consequential decision, as founders have 
outsized influence over the trajectory and success of the venture, and blow-ups among them are a 
common source of venture failure. But it’s hard to know who is the “right” cofounder for you and 
your venture, especially in the early stages, amidst extreme novelty and uncertainty. My research on 
cofounders reveals that there are various dimensions of “cofounder fit” to consider when choosing 
a cofounder. By analyzing how different selection approaches and key cofounder dynamics are 
associated with satisfaction and venture performance, I seek to help entrepreneurs make informed 
cofounder selection decisions and maintain an effective cofounder relationship through all the ups 
and downs of starting a business.

Few patients with knee osteoarthritis are prepared for the disappointment of a joint replacement 
surgery that doesn’t improve their pain and function. Although many consider joint replacement 
a cure for osteoarthritis, at least 1 in 4 people are unhappy with their outcomes after surgery. 
Studies show knee joint inflammation can predict who will need a knee replacement in the 
future, but we don’t know if inflammation can predict or explain poor outcomes after surgery. 
Our approach uses both clinical and lab-based tools to understand how an impaired immune 
system impacts the patient’s experience. This work will improve our understanding of the role of 
the immune system in knee OA and improve the care/management of people undergoing joint 
replacement surgery.

Banco de la República, Colombia’s central bank, has played a major role in the country’s 
economic modernization and has striven to gain the trust of Colombians amidst turbulent times. 
Banco de la República is well known for the ample cultural programs of its Office of Cultural 
Affairs (BanRepCultural), which includes archaeological, documentary and art collections, a 
yearly concerts programme, a public library system, ten museums, and a digital library.  
Covid-19 ignited an unparalleled crisis in the history of Colombia. These circumstances demand 
that the Office of Cultural Affairs be more innovative than ever to be able to continue delivering 
its institutional mission, strengthen the peoples’ sense of citizenship and serve its public. 
In my research, I study BanRepCultural past innovations to unveil the visionary principles that 
have led Banco de la República to become a central actor in the cultural modernization of 
Colombia and may guide its digital transformation path.

My MA thesis is based on the literature and cinematography that exists around the 
Cambodian Genocide, with a focus on film director and literary author Rithy Panh. How do 
survivors move forward with their lives after undergoing extreme trauma and watching their 
entire family be killed and waste away into nothingness? In Rithy Panh’s memoir 
(L’élimination) he writes about his extreme melancholia, the pain of surviving the genocide 
and the grief that follows after losing everything. He highlights the missing images of his 
own life (his family) but also, within history itself. All of this manifests itself in his film 
(L’image manquante), where there are no “real” characters and only includes archival 
footage (images that are real and exist) and scenes with clay characters as avatars of Rithy 
and his family (entities that are constructed and cease to exist apart from in his mind)

A Middle Ground: The Gendered Division of Housework in Heterosexual Mixed-Nativity 
Couples 
 
My project explores the gendered division of housework in heterosexual mixed-nativity unions 
within the United States. Although the gendered division of housework is well-studied, little is 
known about it within mixed-nativity marriages and cohabitations. With a growing number of 
intermarriages across America, understanding the division of housework within these 
relationships is key.  
 
Using data from the American Time-Use Survey and quantitative methods, I address the 
following questions: (1) How does the division of housework for heterosexual mixed-nativity 
couples, both married and cohabiting, compare to that of their same-nativity counterparts? (2) 
How does the gendered division of housework for heterosexual cohabiting mixed-nativity 
couples differ from that of married mixed-nativity couples? My findings indicate that within 
both marriages and cohabitations, mixed-nativity unions operate as a middle ground between 
same nativity native-born couples and same nativity foreign-born couples in terms of women’s 
time spent on housework, with few notable differences amongst men.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans can be used to obtain information about 
individuals’ brain responses to sensory stimuli. Such data on patterns of neural activity can provide 
insights into consumers’ subjective perceptions and decision-making while making purchasing 
decisions. Such stimuli can include images, words, and other symbols that can also comprise 
trademarks. Trademarks are signs or combination of signs used exclusively by market players to 
distinguish their goods or services from those of others. It has been suggested, in the American 
context, that neurological evidence (coined ‘neuromarks’(Mark Bartholomew, “Neuromarks” 
(2018) Minn L Rev at 521-585)) may be incorporated into trademark law. My research examines 
whether ‘neuromarks’ can have a place under current Canadian trademark law, and if not currently, 
whether, given Canada’s international treaty and trade agreement commitments, Canadian law can 
adapt to permit them.

The Unfolded Protein Response is required for antifungal drug resistance in yeast.

Antifungal drug resistance is increasingly becoming a larger cause for mortality, 
especially in immunocompromised individuals. In yeast, the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) 
functions to restore proteostasis of secretory proteins in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) 
through the activation of the ER stress sensor Ire1. The Ire1 can be activated both by 
accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER lumen, and ER lipid bilayer stress. This triggers a 
transcription response to restore the ER folding environment, lipid homeostasis and cell wall 
integrity. However, the mechanisms of UPR activation and genes responsible for yeast resistance 
from exposure to common antifungals, like caspofungin remains unknown. Interestingly, we 
found deletion of the Ire1 luminal domain, which senses misfolded protein accumulation 
sensitizes cells to caspofungin treatment. Using genetic screens and genome-wide transcriptome 
analysis, we are now seeking to identify UPR target genes required for the antifungal response in 
both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the pathogen Candida albicans.

Despite years of health interventions, Nigeria contributing one of the highest numbers of 
maternal and child death is a telling sign of the ineffectiveness of these interventions. Given what 
we currently know about infectious diseases and weak health systems, there is a strong 
possibility that more women and children will die from the consequences of the current 
pandemic. We do not know the impact of the pandemic in health-seeking behaviour and how that 
will affect women’s experiences with healthcare during the pandemic. My research will explore 
the experiences of women with children who may or may not have accessed primary health care 
during the pandemic. The aim is to generate evidence for a people-centred approach to policy 
formulation representing women’s views, opinions, and experiences with the health systems.
