Balancing Interests in Data: The Legal Constructs of Personal Data Protection and Data

As described in my work, the two different Canadian Covid-19 contract tracing apps take two 
different approaches to data and the legal consequences differ: personal data protection law 
specifically gives Canadian organizations responsibilities with respect to collection, use, and 
disclosure of individuals’ personal information but does not apply to non-personal data. 
Technological advances can blur distinctions between identifiable and de-identified personal 
data. The law creating “data exclusivity” gives pharmaceutical companies a legal monopoly for a 
period of years over clinical trial data they provide to the federal government to establish the 
health and safety of drugs (and thus be allowed to distribute the drugs in Canada). Data 
exclusivity traditionally only protected de-identified data but now companies are legally required 
to keep identities of participants available in clinical trial contexts. I explore whether personal 
data protection and data exclusivity are coming to overlap amidst the shifting legal parameters 
involving health data. (150 words)

How wide is a river? This may seem obvious, but for dynamic, multi-channel “braided” rivers it 
is complicated and contentious, involving concerns such as flood vulnerability and land use 
regulation. Braided rivers occur naturally but constriction by human encroachment and river 
management has limited or even eliminated them in landscapes in which they were once 
common. Constricting braided rivers between artificial flood embankments, or encroaching on 
the channels, restricts their natural dynamics and may increase flood risk. An international trend 
towards restoring these rivers has raised significant questions - how much constriction causes 
loss of braiding and how much room does a braided river need to return to natural form and 
function? My research will explore these questions by tracking historic changes of several 
braided rivers in New Zealand that have undergone constriction to discover their natural width 
and help to develop ideas for sustaining these remarkable riverscapes.

Every year, millions of birds prepare to embark on a great journey – migration. But how do they 
know where to go? One of the many ways that birds navigate is through their perception of 
Earth’s Magnetic field. Invisible to human beings, birds sense this force, and can use it to travel 
towards a pole or the equator. I study songbirds’ brains to understand how songbirds perceive 
magnetic fields. One brain region, called Cluster N, seems to be important for some songbirds 
to “see” the magnetic field at night. But there’s still so many questions we have. Can Cluster N 
be used outside of migration? What other types of stimuli can activate Cluster N? Can Cluster N 
be found in non-migratory birds that also perceive electromagnetic fields? By asking these 
questions, we will further understand how songbirds navigate with their “eyes for the 
invisible”.

The need for water purification and reuse increased in recent years as many world 
cities are approaching their Day Zero. The key challenges driving future water 
research are global change (population and climate), large urban areas, water 
resources risk management, protection from water, and protection of water. In my 
research, I am developing novel, efficient, cost-effective band-engineered solar 
photocatalysis process to purify water. This advanced oxidation process-based 
project involves multi-disciplinary fundamental research that includes materials 
engineering for the formulation of visible light-activated semiconductors, 
understanding of solution chemistry to monitor the fate and transport of endocrine 
disrupting components, pharmaceutical and personal care products in wastewater, 
and process development for large-scale water treatment units. The scope of the 
project is not only limited to treatment processes but also to generate fresh potable 
water from other water body sources using renewable energy sources to lessen global 
warming.

In the Litchfield lab, we research Casein Kinase 2 (CK2), a protein kinase which is implicated in the 
development of various cancers and neurological diseases. Protein kinases mediate cellular signalling via 
the transfer of a phosphoryl group, a chemical modification, onto downstream proteins in a process 
known as phosphorylation. CK2 is a master regulator of biological cell processes and is therefore 
involved in much of the cellular signalling that takes place. However, this CK2-dependent cellular 
signalling is often disturbed and pathologically rewired in diseased cells.  
My research involves identifying genuine downstream substrates (i.e. protein targets) of CK2 
phosphorylation. By identifying genuine substrates of CK2, it is then possible to monitor cellular CK2 
activity and learn more about its role in cellular signalling. This would then allow us to monitor patient 
response to CK2-targeted therapies and to evaluate novel CK2 inhibitors.

A PARTICIPATORY APPROACH TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EVALUATION 
FRAMEWORK

Research Summary: 
The Education Act states school boards must regularly evaluate the effectiveness of 
policies. However, no guidance is provided on how. The focus of my research is the design an 
evidence-based plan to guide the creation of an evaluation framework aimed at supporting a 
large urban and diverse school division in Western Canada. The lack of an evaluation framework 
needs to be addressed to meet legislative requirements. However, the process of creating the 
framework can contribute to organizational learning and assist the division in better 
understanding how their policies impact student success. A contributing factor for consideration 
is equity, specifically who participates, to what degree are policies equitable and how are 
judgements ultimately made. The framework will be created using a participatory approach to 
support utilization. Grounded in principles of engagement, participatory evaluation can create 
new opportunities to support leadership in their efforts to use data to improve performance.

Representation of Pandemics in the Media: The Spanish Flu Case Study 
This Major Research Paper compares the portrayal of the 1918 Influenza in the media in 
Spain and Canada. This pandemic, dubbed by the public as the “Spanish Flu,” presents 
a historical case study that demonstrates the detrimental social, economic, and political 
implications of associating a virus with a foreign nation, which is particularly relevant in 
the face of the COVID-19 pandemic today. To this end, the study analyzes headlines, 
stories, advertisements, and political/editorial cartoons in Spanish and Canadian 
newspapers (such as El País and The Globe and Mail, respectively) to document the 
Canadian press’ role in perpetuating this harmful rhetoric, which in this case lead to 
discrimination against Spaniards in Canada and affected international relations between 
the two countries for decades afterwards.

I’m a Western “lifer”, having earned a BHSc (’20) and MSc (’21) here, and now, I’ve signed up 
for a PhD too. I’m still here because I’m passionate about the research.  
 
As a member of the Women’s Health Matters Research team, I work with women who have 
experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) to learn about how to best support their health. 
Considering that 1 in 3 women will experience IPV in their lifetime, it’s clear that a this is a 
massive public health issue with ramifications across the lifespan.  
 
However, public health decisions to support women require evidence-based recommendations. 
In recognition of this, I use mixed methods to elucidate the reality of women’s experiences of 
IPV in Canada. For example, I’ve studied the increase in IPV in response to COVID-19 public 
health measures to help inform violence-informed pandemic response planning.

Can Mathematics Help Restore Forests?
When thinking about mathematics, complicated equations, formulas, and graphs frequently come
to mind. What some may find surprising is just how broad the reach of math really is. By harnessing
the power of mathematical and computational tools, we can tackle problems in seemingly disparate
fields such as ecology. This allows researchers to take an integrative approach to problem solving,
where ecologists and mathematicians can collaborate. For example, invasive weed species can lead
to depletion of natural forests, which can trigger a cascading effect that also impacts the local wildlife
that depend on the forests for survival. Various methods, like herbicide application, have been sug-
gested and applied as possible control measures against forest depletion. By applying mathematical
theory and using computers to perform simulations, we can make predictions on which control mea-
sures might be most effective in the long run without having to wait. After all, time is of the essence!
