Being pushed and pulled: understanding how climate change and foreign 
investment interact to influence rural-to-rural migration in sub-Saharan Africa 
 
My doctoral research explores how climate change and foreign investment interact to 
influence people’s decisions to migrate from rural areas in northern Ghana to rural 
areas in southern Ghana, and the gendered differences in these experiences. I want to 
identify who migrates, where they migrate to, and what work they do in the migration 
destination. I am also interested in learning about why some people never migrate, and 
why some migrate but return to the migration origin. I chose to study migrant 
communities in sub-Saharan Africa because my own parents migrated from northern to 
southern Ghana to provide me with better educational, economic and health 
opportunities. I focus on rural communities and rural-to-rural migration because four 
out of five people living in poverty globally are rural dwellers. I expect my research to 
inform economic and social policies that can improve the lives of rural people in Ghana 
and sub-Saharan Africa.

Recent years have witnessed a shift to place patients at the center of their care as active partners 
rather than passive recipients. Achieving this goal requires close attention to the use of language. 
My research analyzes 136 responses from nurses collected for a large international survey that 
focuses on the term "pain catastrophizing." Pain catastrophizing is a label often used by 
healthcare providers to categorize patients. These patients are described as helpless and are 
thought to exaggerate their pain. Ultimately, this label creates barriers to pain management by 
silencing patients, creating stigma, invalidating patients' experiences, and fostering patient 
blame. Nurses play a crucial role in promoting patients' strengths and advocating for 
collaborative care; therefore, it is important to explore how nurses understand and use the term 
pain catastrophizing to shed light on the impact that language has on patient-centred care and to 
inform strategies that minimize patient blame and stigma.

My PhD research explores the ways in which women who are childless not by choice 
(CNBC) experience a sense of community and develop self-empowerment through singing in the 
Childless Voices Choir in England. Pronatalist discourse stigmatizes women who, like me, are 
CNBC, positioning them as Other to those who have children, often leaving them without 
supportive communities of empathetic and similarly circumstanced people. Singing is a creative, 
embodied, and vulnerable act that provides opportunities for personal growth. Music education 
and community music research demonstrates that choral singing fosters a sense of community 
among singers and serves as a catalyst for self-empowerment. Through ethnographic methods, 
and a collaborative composition and recording project, my research critically examines the ways 
in which CNBC women recognize, critique, and resist pronatalist discourses within the choral 
environment. I examine how a capacity for action derived from solidarity may lead to 
opportunities for self-empowerment through singing together.

Studies have confirmed stimulus-induced activity in response to verbal and non-verbal self-
referential processing (SRP) in cortical midline structures, temporoparietal cortex and insula. 
Whether SRP can be causally modulated by non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has also been 
investigated in several studies. Here we summarize the NIBS literature including 27 studies of 
task-based SRP comparing response between verbal and non-verbal SRP tasks. The studies 
differed in design, experimental tasks and stimulation parameters. Results support the role of left 
inferior parietal lobule (left IPL) in verbal SRP and for the medial prefrontal cortex when 
valenced stimuli were used. Further, results support roles for the bilateral parietal lobe (IPL, 
posterior cingulate cortex), the sensorimotor areas (the primary sensory and motor cortex, the 
premotor cortex, and the extrastriate body area) and the insula in non-verbal SRP (bodily self-
consciousness). We conclude that NIBS may differentially modulate verbal and non-verbal SRP 
by targeting the corresponding brain areas.
