Why wait? Early rehabilitation strategies during casting of broken wrists to improve recovery.  
Broken wrists require weeks of physical therapy to recover from the losses of strength and range of 
motion that comes with keeping the arm still during casting. Standard care is to start rehabilitation 
interventions after the cast is removed. Instead, I’m interested in using strategies that don’t require 
physical movement, to start treatment earlier. To do this I will be implementing in-home nerve 
stimulation and mental rehearsal interventions while the wrist is still casted. The goal is to shorten 
reduce the losses of strength and range of motion from immobilizing the wrist and shorten recovery 
time. This study will produce early treatment strategies to improve care for the large number of people 
who break their wrists. Once developed these early treatment strategies can be adapted for other 
patient populations requiring immobilization.

‘Body image’ refers to the inside view of one’s body and constitutes how we see, think 
about, feel, and behave towards our body. Given that criticizing and evaluating one’s 
body negatively is tied to worse mental and physical health (e.g., eating disorders, 
depression, exercise avoidance), my research aims to uncover structural (e.g., gender 
and weight-related discrimination) and individual (e.g., low self-compassion) factors that 
may be targeted to improve one’s relationship with their body. Unfortunately, 
experiencing body dissatisfaction has been described in the literature as ‘normative 
discontent’ for girls and women, meaning that girls and women talk about and evaluate 
their bodies so negatively and consistently that it is considered ‘normal’. Thus, the 
mission with my research is to shift the conversation for girls and women from how their 
bodies look to everything that it can do and develop interventions that help realize their 
potential beyond body shape, size, and appearance.

REDUCE. ELIMINATE. PREVENT. 
 
Government initiatives across Canada aimed at addressing gender based violence share a 
common goal of reducing, eliminating, and ultimately preventing violence. However, questions 
remain as to how the goal of prevention is reached and how the violence against women (VAW) 
sector is evaluated in making progress toward prevention. The purpose of this research is to first 
analyze the discourse of prevention in the VAW sector to shed light on what prevention means 
and how it is constructed in government documents. Second, my research aims to understand 
how current primary prevention efforts in Canada that target one pervasive form of VAW, 
namely intimate partner violence (IPV), are evaluated. The goal of this research is to develop a 
standardized evaluation model or manual for IPV-related primary prevention efforts in Canada to 
identify measurable outcomes of success for these programs, how programs should be monitored 
or evaluated, and determine program accessibility.

"Moments of meeting": the impact of "being known" on the inclusion of individuals 
with disabilities in musical contexts. 
"Moments of meeting" can be described as moments of mutual recognition, as an 
encounter between two or more individuals, in which they experience being "seeing and 
known"1. In short, a moment when we are recognized and valued by another person.  
Throughout ten years of teaching music to individuals with disabilities, I have observed 
that relationships played a crucial role in inclusion. Moments of shared experiences in which 
students and teachers create things together, such as stories, compositions, improvisations, may 
provide meaningful participation and learning opportunities for all. 
This relational perspective has been little explored in studies within music education2. 
Therefore, in my doctoral research, I decided to examine the relational aspect focusing on 
moments of mutual recognition. I am interested in understanding how "moments of meeting" 
occur in inclusive musical settings. And how such moments may impact the inclusion, learning, 
and lived experiences of individuals with disabilities in those contexts.

Throughout the spring of 2020, the beginning of a pandemic gripped Canada and the world. By March of 2020 
medical professionals including nurses were being called upon to provide care for ill patients in the face of PPE 
shortages. Nurses in particular were singled out as “heroes” during this time, and their identity as a “caring” 
profession was held out as a rationale for them to provide care in what they viewed as unnecessarily dangerous 
conditions.   
            Drawing on national media accounts, this study examined the narrative of nurses as healthcare heroes, and 
the underlying ideas about caring, with the contradictory reports from those working on the frontlines. Using the 
outbreak of COVID-19 as a context, and drawing on historical information from SARS, this study seeks to establish 
caring as a discourse and examine how that discourse may have impeded nurses’ ability to protect themselves from 
harm both then and now.

Exercise, Nutrition and Pregnancy: Keeping Two Generations Healthy! 
 
Pregnancy is a complex time in a person’s life. No, really – it’s more than just growing a 
baby for 40 weeks. An individual’s exercise and nutrition habits while they are pregnant 
could impact their risk of experiencing adverse pregnancy outcomes or developing obesity, 
diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. Healthy lifestyle choices during pregnancy can even 
help the growing fetus have better health outcomes, like better weight at birth and a lower 
risk of developing chronic disease after birth. 
 
I am working to find the best way to help pregnant people begin being physically active and 
eating well during their pregnancies, and even after the baby is born. Starting early in 
pregnancy, individuals are introduced to an exercise and nutrition program that helps them 
gain appropriate weight throughout pregnancy. My work can help reduce the risk of chronic 
disease and improve the health of two generations: mom AND their baby!

Title: Moving Beyond Diagnostic Labels in ASD and ADHD Could Improve Access to Treatment.  
Clinical definitions of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) 
may fall short in identifying some of the milder symptoms in these disorders. One way to 
improve access to treatment is to look at the entire range of symptoms in these disorders where 
individuals do not need an official diagnosis and instead, can have issues ranging anywhere 
from clinically severe, to minor. By using this approach, I have found that even those without an 
official ASD or ADHD diagnosis struggle with aspects of language, learning, and social 
communication. This research shows that we do not need an individual to be functioning at the 
lowest level, as often indicated by an official diagnosis, in order to benefit from treatment. Those 
with varying levels of the disorder who are not yet diagnosed can also benefit.
