Reputation in Prohibited Marks, Geographical Indications, and Moral Rights: A Key Link? 
 
During my Master’s thesis research, I noted intellectual property enactments include two 
different types of protection: classic intellectual property devices (patents, copyright, and 
trademarks) -- known to be monopolies that bring economic benefits to their owners, and 
characterized as tradable, licensable, transferable, and therefore alienable rights -- and other 
devices, such as prohibited marks and geographical indications, and moral rights, that are not 
tradable, not licensable, not transferable, and therefore inalienable. Can the latter three, if not 
intellectual property, be linked together as their own set? What is the link that can unite them 
and set them apart from the classic three intellectual property devices? I hypothesize the 
unique link amongst prohibited marks, geographical indications, and moral rights is ‘reputation’ 
(as understood in defamation law) and it distinguishes them, as a class, from intellectual 
property. What might this mean for the futures of prohibited marks, geographical indications, 
and moral rights?

Tackling Chronic Disease during a Pandemic 
Chronic diseases (CD) have been plaguing our mental and physical health for far too 
long. The inherent premise of CD is its ability to be treated but not cured. As our population 
continues to reach higher life expectancies, quality of life is diminishing as CDs such as 
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer engulf our capacity to live healthier and fuller 
lives.  
However, there is a caveat; most CDs are preventable, with modifiable risk factors 
including diet, physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol intake. My passion for managing and 
preventing CD in Canada fueled my interest in searching for a practicum that aligned with my 
goals. Thus, as a Master of Public Health student, I am interning at Heart & Stroke, where my 
projects surround providing access to equitable heart failure care for populations most at-risk. 
My goal is to aid in decreasing its incidence and prevalence rate in the country.

My research aims to investigate the association between social determinants of health and 
physical activity and to understand which social determinants of health are the strongest 
predictors of physical activity among middle-aged to older adults. The health benefits of 
physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease are well-established. 
However, those who are more socially advantaged are more likely to have the time and 
resources to engage in regular physical activity and less likely to experience the negative health 
outcomes of physical inactivity. Knowledge of the social determinants of health and its impact 
on physical activity engagement is needed to effectively promote physical activity equitability. 
It is inappropriate to recommend 150 minutes of physical activity a week as a blanket solution 
to all individuals without taking into consideration the social context in which health behaviours 
take place, which ultimately shapes how an individual experiences health.

Do our Hands see what our Eyes see? 
 
Daily, mammals recognize, identify and classify a large variety of objects in their 
environment instinctively. Our  human ability to see, understand, remember, and manipulate 
mental images in order to problem solve are known as spatial abilities. Similarly,  translating “how 
things feel” into a mental image refers to our haptic abilities. Although both spatial and haptic 
abilities are thought to be important for learning and technical skills in science, technology, 
engineering and mathematics, termed STEM disciplines,  we do not know if there is an association 
between them. My experiments explore potential linkages between these abilities by examining an 
individual’s speed and accuracy while performing a unique object manipulation test relying on 
one’s sense of vision, touch, and their combination. Ultimately, these experiments will expand our 
understanding of the importance of what we touch and whether it is related and interacts with what 
we see.

Should we welcome human extinction? I argue that the answer is yes, but not yet. Philosophers rooted
in the pessimist tradition initiated by Arthur Schopenhauer in the 19th century argue that existence is 
always determined by suffering and endless strife. Given a choice, it is always better to not have been 
born. Ultimately, pessimist philosophers favour extinction. Our demise, however, must come about 
voluntarily, the result of a conscious decision - not something thrust upon us against our will. This is 
why pessimists agree that the existential threats humanity faces should be defeated. Contemporary 
existential risk philosophers have taken it upon themselves to understand these threats and propose 
ways of countering them. For these philosophers life is good and extinction should always be avoided.
I show that pessimists and risk management philosophers can come together in order to save life on 
this planet, even though their motivations are different.

I never thought that the answer to “Where am I going to use math again?” would be to understand 
how birds make decisions. Bird migrations are a formidable scientific challenge because of 
missing puzzle pieces such as, “How do birds make decisions to get from Alaska to Argentina?” 
One possibility could be the Earth’s magnetic field. This invisible shield around Earth not only 
protects us from solar radiation but it could also double as a navigation cue for birds. My research 
examines this relationship. I first connect geomagnetic data to bird movement data. Then I use this 
fused dataset to build mathematical models. My goal is to understand how birds integrate 
geomagnetic and other cues (like habitat and wind) to make migratory decisions. My work will 
unravel a part of the mysterious process that occurs as birds take to the skies to migrate hundreds 
of kilometers each year.

Campylobacter jejuni is a leading cause of foodborne diarrheal disease worldwide, typically 
obtained through contact with contaminated poultry products. My research focuses on 
development of a biosensor for detection of C. jejuni in food samples. A biosensor is any device 
that converts a biological response to a measurable signal. Bacteria pass genetic information to 
each other through a process called conjugation – which we plan to exploit as the basis for our 
biosensor. DNA from a non-disease-causing species of Escherichia coli will be passed to C. 
jejuni via conjugation, and will trigger C. jejuni to produce proteins. These proteins will activate 
a signal in E. coli, which results in the bacteria becoming fluorescent. This proposed system will 
be a fast, highly specific, and low-cost alternative to current detection methods by food 
manufacturers.

Empower to Collaborate 
I still remember my first monitoring session. The instructor stood at the lectern and read 
from the textbook. With no voice, the millennial students toyed with their smartphones. 
Like students, employees also need a voice—their voice. The goal of my research in 
educational leadership was to explore how a collaborative approach to leadership can influence 
both students and employees’ engagement at the college where I work. 
In my experience, most instructors choose to lecture to students and many leaders prefer 
directing employees. While both have merit, such practices would not be optimal at my college 
where innovation is crucial. But innovation requires participants who are engaged (Amabile, 
1996; Hedges, 2018). Indeed, engaged people become empowered and empowerment inspires 
autonomy—antecedents to organizational success (Avolio & Gardner, 2005). Furthermore, 
empowering people gives them voice which stimulates intrinsic engagement—arguably an 
integral precursor to collaboration so necessary in today’s workplace.

Innovating the Meaning of a Product 
Many IT companies claim they are innovative, but what are they innovating? I cross-examine IT 
product designers and ask them, among many other questions, why their products are innovative 
and how these differ from competing products. I find that some designers innovate technology, 
e.g., making thinner cameras for self-driving cars. Yet others innovate the meaning of the product, 
e.g., making smart speakers to create a modern and convenient home rather than aiming for perfect 
sound quality. Advanced technology is not always good and sometimes even hinders product 
innovation, that is because it can be too difficult to understand or too expensive. Mindlessly 
pushing technology might be a road without an exit. At the same time, designers cannot ignore 
advanced technology that might make products competitive. Thus, I study how designers 
strategically leverage advanced technology to innovate the meaning of a product.

Every fall and spring, billions of birds undertake the ultra-marathon that is migration. Migration is a 
monumental challenge, requiring many adaptations for birds to complete the journey. One poorly 
understood area of adaptations is the mitochondria – the powerhouse of the cell. The objective of my 
PhD research is to investigate how birds alter their flight muscle mitochondria to meet the demands of 
migratory flight. My first study investigates how mitochondria are affected by damage from simulated 
migratory flight. Next, I am investigating how birds alter their mitochondria during seasonal preparation 
for migration. My last study is to investigate how mitochondria vary with the difficulty of migration: 
long-distance vs. short-distance vs. non-migratory. My PhD research will shine a light on metabolic 
mechanisms that birds use to overcome the challenges of migration and how mitochondria are modified 
by animals to overcome extreme endurance exercise.
