I was born and schooled in Bardiya, a rural district in western Nepal  which is synonymous with 
Tharus as this is their ancestral homeland. Tharu is one of the many severely  disadvantaged 
indigenous communities in Nepal, although the country prides itself  being a cultural mosaic. I 
grew up with them celebrating their festivals, their  culture and traditions,  and speaking their 
language. Although the district was predominantly Tharus, they remained almost invisible in 
public schools. There was a complete disconnect between their schooling experience and home 
experience resulting their alienation from schools. Public schools are conducted in  Nepali 
language that celebrate dominant high-caste hill Hindu culture in schooling processes serving 
mostly dominant community.  Given this context, I am now investigating for how public school 
leaders,  those who are committed for social justice,  ensure education success for these 
students who are the victim of the education system they are the part.

When any engineering device is designed, there is a fundamental question that needs 
to be answered: Will the product fail under operating condition? And if yes, how 
long does it take? The answer to this question is extremely important, especially for 
the products in which their safety and economic operation is imperative, e.g. a car 
engine, a gas vessel, or a nuclear reactor. To access accurately the life cycle of these 
engineering products, there has been an increasing interest in the past decade in the 
engineering simulators. The more advanced features these simulators have, the more 
reliable they are. In my PhD studies at the Mechanical and Materials Engineering 
department of Western University, I have been working on the development of such 
an advanced simulator which can be used in the nuclear energy sector.

The Stories of Women Experiencing Homelessness Facing Child Separation: A 
Narrative Inquiry Study 
Homelessness is recognized as the leading cause of family separation, including mother-child 
separation in Nigeria. Mother-child separation – another obstacle to exiting homelessness, has 
been identified as a significant barrier to exiting homelessness and a source of grief to mothers 
facing homelessness. While a gap in understanding the experience of homeless women and the 
impact of child separation exists in Sub-Sahara Africa, no studies have directly examined the 
processes through which separations occur in families experiencing homelessness in Nigeria. 
It is unknown how child separation does or does not impact homeless experiences for mothers 
in Nigeria. Through a critical feminist lens, a narrative inquiry research methodology will be 
used to explore the stories of women experiencing homelessness facing child separation and 
understand how these women cope with child separation.

How many of us can proudly declare that they speak both official languages of Canada, English 
and French? Bilingualism may be at the heart of Canadian identity, but not so many among can 
confidently speak French even after all those years spent in compulsory French class. What 
happens in Core French class and why so many students stop their language studies after grade 
9? Why student engagement in Core French classroom is notoriously low and how can we, 
practitioners, get to the root of the problem, analyze the research findings and draw 
meaningful implications for practice for thousands of disheartened Core French teachers out 
there who strive to keep their students engaged and motivated, yet find the task extremely 
challenging. My name is Irina Klimenko, and my MPEd Capstone project is dedicated to 
exploring practical solutions to improve, maintain and hone student motivation in second 
language learning.

This past year, I began developing Naverra Music Collective (@naverramc), a grassroots 
instrument library and mobile recording studio created with the intention of eliminating 
barriers in musical experience. It is typical that musicians of any age are limited to what 
instruments they have access to. Naverra aims to give individuals the opportunity to find 
their new favorite instrument, whether it's a banjo, a trombone, or anything in-between, 
without worrying if they will be able to afford it.  
Naverra Music Collective also strives to develop a collection of recording equipment 
capable of delivering professional quality to hobbyist and rising star alike. Naverra strives 
to offer recording studio experiences that would normally be impossible without access to 
specialized equipment.  
Through this program, everyone can participate in music-making and recording, helping to 
create life-long music enthusiasts and reduce the number of individuals that stop making 
music once it’s no longer a required course.

If	you	imagine	the	worlds	thinnest	and	fastest	coffee	filter,	you	understand	the	basis	of	what	I	
am	trying	to	do	with	my	research.	I	am	trying	to	use	a	very	thin	and	strong	material	to	create	
the	ultimate	filter	which	could	be	used	to	clean	water	or	air.	The	material	I	am	testing	is	called	
graphene	which	is	made	up	of	carbon	atoms.	This	material	is	naturally	like	a	wall	so	to	create	a	
filter,	I	drill	holes	in	it	using	a	beam	of	electrons.	I	place	the	graphene	on	a	well	and	charge	it	up	
with	gas	until	the	graphene	inflates	or	remove	the	gas	until	the	graphene	deflates.	I	then	
measure	how	fast	the	gas	flows	out	of	or	into	the	hole	I	drilled.	I	will	use	this	information	to	see	
which	parts	of	the	gases	the	graphene	can	keep	in	or	out	and	how	well.

In my research, I explore how Ontario school principals understand equity in virtual 
schooling. Virtual schooling is a type of educational instruction that is delivered partially or 
completely through virtual technology, as opposed to a brick and mortar school. In Ontario, 
virtual schooling became a required part of the high-school curriculum in March 2019. This use 
escalated exponentially when, in March 2020, in-person schools across the province and the 
globe were forced to emergency switch to virtual schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If 
virtual schooling becomes a normalized part of Ontario high-school students’ experiences in the 
post-pandemic world, new policies will have to be created. Research shows that school 
principals are the strongest influence on school policy implementation and success. By exploring 
how school principals understand equity in virtual schooling, gaps in understanding may be 
revealed. These understandings and gaps may help to inform more equitable virtual school 
policies.

Curriculum, Theory and Practice: Exploring Nurses and Nursing Students' Knowledge of, 
Attitudes Towards and Self- Efficacy in Caring for The Elderly in Canada 
My study explores nurses and nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy in caring 
for the elderly, and addresses the factors contributing to nurses' perspectives. It also examines the 
nursing curriculum's contributions to nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy and provides 
suggestions to reconfigure the nursing curriculum for comprehensive geriatric nursing care. A 
mixed-method research design was used to address the purpose of the study. The results revealed 
that most nurses possess neutral attitudes toward caring for geriatric patients, and their knowledge 
ranged from mild to moderate levels; most nurses had an average level of self-efficacy. Results 
also showed a statistically significant positive correlation between nurses' attitudes and knowledge 
level and between self-efficacy and knowledge level. Similarly, there was a statistically significant 
positive correlation between nurses' attitudes and self-efficacy and between self-efficacy and years 
of experience. This study demonstrated the positive impact of the Canadian nursing curriculum on 
nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy.
