My research focuses on human-robot interactions (HRI) in the context of mobility assistance, specifically 
personal assistive and rehabilitative devices that rely on a robot's ability to understand and adapt to 
human intentions and perceptions. The product of my research, the Smart Walker (SW) is a prototype 
equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with machine learning capabilities, Time of Flight 
(ToF) range sensors, and pressure sensors on the handles. The sensors measure and interpret the states 
of the walker and the human user. The walker also includes hydraulic disk brakes on the wheels that 
respond to control commands. I developed an algorithm with five key operational states that relate 
human movements to desired actions for the walker. The algorithm utilizes a decision tree framework for 
classifying various states. I conducted a series of experiments to investigate how the walker could 
interpret human movement patterns and adjust its function to offer regulated assistance. The SW device 
opens up the possibility of integrating robots into the human environment as personal companions, 
allowing people with mobility issues to live independently. The insights gained from my research can be 
applied to a broader spectrum of HRI applications.

Failure to Protect or A Failure to Be Protected? The Criminalization and/or                 
Revictimization of Intimate Partner Violence Victim-Survivors Who Are Mothers 
 
 Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant societal, legal, and public health concern. 
Yet, current Canadian policies/approaches for addressing IPV are doing a significant degree of 
harm to victim-survivors, who are disproportionately women. In particular, social services and 
institutions such as the healthcare system, child welfare system, and the criminal justice system 
are serving to revictimize and/or criminalize women who are IPV victim-survivors - with 
specific respect to women who are also mothers. Often, mothers who are IPV victim-survivors 
are blamed for ‘exposing’ their children to violence. In addition to the damage that this 
revictimization and/or criminalization is doing to women, it also draws attention away from 
those who perpetrate violence while obscuring women’s victim-survivor status. As a result, my 
research seeks to better understand how - based on the experiences of mothers who are IPV 
victim-survivors - we can create policies and practices that support them and their children.

Building a Better Mousetrap: Finding A More Nuanced Approach to Fostering Culture in the Digital Age 
Don’t mess with the mouse is a cautionary tale about Disney’s intellectual property. Creation, education, 
and access are the public interest goals of copyright. Ownership of copyrighted material most often 
resides in corporate hands who wish to maximize their own profit through artificial scarcity and lobbying 
legislation and trade deals. Canadian courts have long been champions of users’ rights, which are also 
human rights. However liberally Canadian courts interpret copyright, access to content can still be 
controlled via distribution. Broadcasting and telecommunications regulations in Canada have been 
increasingly at odds with supporting Canadian creators. Canadian policy needs to see Canadian creators 
supported in a more holistic way that encompasses the needs of creators, users, and owners. Canadian 
policy makers need to borrow a page from Canadian creators and write a new way forward.

Students’ Levels of Resilience and their Experiences of Diversity and Inclusion 
Abstract: 
This study’s primary purpose was to assess, quantitatively, the relationship between 
Ontario undergraduates’ levels of resilience and experiences of diversity and inclusion, and to 
identify demographic factors most associated with these outcomes. The secondary purpose was 
to explore, qualitatively, students’ experiences of diversity and inclusion and their perspectives 
on how these experiences influenced their resilience. Demographic questions, three scales, and 
(focus group and individual) interviews were used. Undergraduates (n = 276) from 19 Ontario 
universities completed the survey. Pearson’s correlation revealed a positive relationship between 
resilience and experiences of diversity and feelings of inclusion. Demographics indicative of 
equity-deserving group membership were most associated with levels of resilience, experiences 
of diversity, and feelings of inclusion. Through interviews (n = 25), students described mostly 
positive experiences of diversity at university, with room for improvement regarding inclusion 
experiences. These findings can inform meaningful institutional practices to advance 
undergraduates’ experiences of diversity and inclusion.

Rapid, Reliable, and Risk-Free Detection of Fentanyl

Canada is in the midst of an opioid crisis: potent drugs like Fentanyl have been
responsible for over 42,000 overdoses across the country each year. Canadians are consuming
street drugs underhandedly cut with cheap and deadly fillers designed to increase their potency.
To combat the increasing number of misrepresented narcotics, drug analysis can be performed at
safe consumption sites, alerting users of the presence of dangerous fillers and verifying the
chemical composition of each substance before consumption.
My research is focused on creating an analytical technique that offers rapid, reliable, and
risk-free methods for drug investigation, implementing Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
(SERS) to detect trace amounts of Fentanyl in street drugs.
I have designed a highly sensitive SERS method that is calibrated to reveal the molecular
fingerprint of Fentanyl in under 5 minutes using arrays of raspberry-shaped gold nanoparticles
(AuNPs) on a glass coverslip as the drug loading platform.

Summary 
This proposal focuses on the experience of stroke caregivers using online health 
information. Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability, requiring significant care, often 
provided by family and friends known as stroke caregivers. Caregivers face multifaceted 
stressors, including emotional, physical and financial challenges. With the widespread use of the 
internet, caregivers increasingly turn to online health information for support. There's limited 
research on how caregivers utilize online resources. This study aims to explore this gap by 
conducting a qualitative study using Interpretive Description methodology recruiting participants 
from support groups and social media. Through thematic analysis of interview data, the study 
seeks to uncover the nuances of caregivers' experiences with online health information, including 
its impact, sources used, and challenges faced. Ultimately, the study aims to inform the 
development of targeted interventions and resources to better support stroke caregivers in the 
digital age.

Contextual Considerations 
 
To understand the nature of postgraduate research-creation in popular music technology and 
creativity at Western, it helps to view MA and PhD studies in this area as an extension of the 
undergraduate program in Popular Music Studies. 
 
Since its inception in 2006, the BA in Popular Music Studies has focused on music production, 
songwriting, and sound media, with research-creation as a core value. Courses devoted to 
creative processes, technology, and production lie at the heart of the module (77% of the 
offerings) and prepare students for careers as creative practitioners. 
 
Graduates from the BA in Popular Music Studies regularly seek MA and PhD opportunities that 
allow them to further their technological and creative work – for example, recent PhD recipients 
at Western have focused on mastering, production, and songwriting. 
 
 
 
Definitions 
 
Research-Creation in Popular Music Technology & Creativity 
• projects in this field combine creative processes and academic research practices to foster  
 innovation and the development of knowledge through artistic expression and experimentation 
 
• both the act of creating something novel and the processes, techniques, and methodologies  
 belonging to technology and creativity in popular music are central to this work 
 
• research-creation projects realize ideas through an exploration of new methods and techniques 
 
Artist-Researcher 
• an individual whose work embraces both the creation of art works and the research that

Practice-as-Research (also known as Practice-Based Research) 
• practice-as-research projects are designed to answer specific questions about art and the  
 practice of it, questions which cannot be explored and answered successfully by other means 
 
• this form of research-creation emphasizes creative exploration and innovation and draws on a  
 range of methods and/or research processes within the framework of artistic practice 
 
• because a practice-as-research dissertation focuses on the creation of an art work, the artefact  
 on its own provides the contribution to knowledge 
 
• moreover, since the originality of the dissertation is demonstrated through a work of art, a  
 complete understanding of the significance of that artefact is achieved only by experiencing   
 the art work as a whole 
 
• in other words, the artefact is not merely an illustration of the strategies employed –  
 it is the research 
 
• practice-as-research projects regularly include a written text (the exegesis) which describes  
 and/or explains the thinking that shaped the artistic practice, even if this description/  
 explanation differs from established points of view held in the scholarly community 
 
• although the exegesis provides the context and methodological framework for the project, its  
 primary function is to make readers aware of the thinking that led to the creation of the artefact  
 – it is not a “research” document in any traditional sense 
 
• in summary, practice-as-research articulates creative ideas and produces an artefact using  
 relevant tools, techniques, and methodologies – new knowledge is gained through practice and  
 the outcomes of that practice 
 
Practice-Led Research 
• research that leads to new understandings of practice 
 
• it is concerned with the nature of practice and produces knowledge appropriate for practitioners 
 
• this research includes practice as an integral part of its method, and although the research may  
 be adequately explained through text alone, the advancement of knowledge is greatly enhanced  
 by the presence of a creative artefact 
 
• nonetheless, the primary goal of practice-led research is to generate new knowledge about  
 artistic practice
