Teaching What Isn’t Taught:  
An e-Learning Course in Physical Activity for Early Childhood Educators 
 
Early childhood educators (ECEs) are young children’s primary daytime role models and are 
responsible for programming active play experiences in childcare; yet, they receive little related 
education in their schooling. My doctoral research entailed creating an e-Learning course on 
appropriate physical activity for young children, in consultation with over 50 experts around the 
world, to fill this gap in training. I pilot tested the course with three Canadian pre-service ECE 
college programs, and over 100 practicing ECEs. ECEs showed increases in their knowledge, 
confidence, and intention to promote physical activity in childcare, and they recommended that 
this e-Learning course be offered to all Canadian ECEs. With such encouraging outcomes, 
positive feedback from participants, and the recent shift to virtual platforms, leveraging e-
Learning to deliver physical activity training to ECEs nationwide is a feasible, effective approach 
to ensure educators are confident and prepared to lead active play in childcare.

Why can bacteria be harmless one day but deadly the next?

Most of the time when someone gets a cut, they will put a bandage on it and wait for it to heal 
with no complications. Sometimes that cut may get infected, but a little bit of antibiotic ointment 
will clear it up easily. In the worst of cases, instead of the infection clearing up, it will enter your 
body and cause a potentially fatal bacterial infection. I study the bacteria commonly known as 
“staph” but known to scientists at Staphylococcus aureus. Around 1/3 of the world’s population 
have S. aureus living naturally on their skin doing no harm until it sees an opportunity. My 
research aims to understand why sometimes S. aureus will cause no issue, but other times lead to 
fatal infections. The hope is that the more we understand the conditions leading to such deadly 
infections, the better we will be able to prevent and treat these diseases.

The Phenomenological Basis of Embodied Agency 
Embodied agency and bodily awareness are closely interrelated. How one experiences 
one’s body “from the inside” via proprioception or interoception plays a crucial role in one’s bodily 
actions. A controversy underlying their relationship is about whether bodily awareness, especially 
proprioceptive awareness, is necessary for bodily action. One important account has proposed that 
the capacity for ordinarily bodily action requires the capacity for proprioception. However, the 
proposal relies on a susceptible interpretation of controversial pathologies. My research aims at 
defending this account from another tradition. I argue that the resources from phenomenology 
fasten the significance of bodily awareness for bodily actions. Not only that phenomenology 
provides theoretical basis for the necessity claim, but the up-to-date experimental evidence also 
supports the dependence of bodily actions on bodily awareness. Moreover, this avoids relying on 
the undetermined pathological cases. If my argument works, the claim that embodied agency 
requires bodily awareness can be met.

Portraits of internationally minded educators 
As the global educational landscape continues to evolve, teachers are increasingly being called upon to 
internationalize the curriculum. What this means to them and how they might go about doing this 
requires teachers to possess and promote particular types of dispositions and sensibilities that embrace 
an ethical sense of global awareness and responsibility. International mindedness is one of the ways in 
which these sensibilities have been conceptualised and is the phenomenon of focus in this study. In 
order to better understand how international mindedness develops, this study will explore with 
participants the types of lived experiences that foster a teacher’s interest, investment and commitment 
to international mindedness.  The ultimate product of this research will be a series of “portraits” 
intended to capture the essence of international mindedness as represented by each participant.

My work focuses on the International Criminal Court’s (ICC’s) principle of complementarity. 
The principle of complementarity obligates the ICC to intervene only when domestic courts 
are unable or unwilling to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. My 
research examines the effect of ICC-led interventions on gender-sensitive justice, sustainable 
peace, and legal pluralism, focusing on post-conflict Uganda. To safeguard human 
flourishing, it is essential to pursue accountability without destabilizing post-conflict societies 
and triggering the resurgence of conflict. I argue that flexible and context-specific 
accountability mechanisms are sufficient to meet local understandings of justice and can lead 
to sustainable peace in societies transitioning out of periods of war. My research will 
contribute to a deeper understanding of how the principle of complementarity can apply to 
other post-conflict societies in a gender-sensitive manner, thereby contributing to the promise 
of a more equitable and lasting peace.

A member of an ethnic minority from West China, I have worked in business and sustainable 
development in three continents over the last decade. I feel a strong sense of belonging to where 
I originated and, at the same time, a global attachment.  
 
My dissertation focuses on how local organizations can achieve sustainable development and 
improve lives in a world of unprecedented global challenges. To answer the question, I collected 
qualitative data through conducting ethnography at LuxuryYak, a Tibetan luxury enterprise with 
a place-based approach that has developed unique strategies to foster economic prosperity while 
preserving local ecological and social well-being. I developed three essays that collectively offer 
insights on the mechanisms of space and place that guide organizations' actions in achieving 
sustainable development between the local and global. 
 
In so doing, I contribute scholarly to help organizations and local communities adapt in a 
radically changing world.

For most of us, buying a house will be the largest investment that we make. These homes are where we 
feel like our families and belongings are safe. In general, we assume that since our homes are built by 
professionals following the building code, they must meet some appropriate level of strength. However, 
the risks posed by extreme weather are increasing and the national building code hasn’t adapted to 
address these perils for houses. There is a need for updated standards to ensure that houses are built 
for long-term resilience. I am studying damage caused by extreme wind events and developing cost-
effective options for preventing devastating failures. I work with homebuilders to troubleshoot the 
proposed measures so that future building code changes are more likely to be accepted by the industry. 
Our goal is to identify the simplest solutions that do the most good to protect communities from 
weather-induced losses.

Investigating Physiological Determinants of Mental Health in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Fifty-seven percent of children with cerebral palsy (CP) experience mental health 
symptoms including symptoms of anxiety and depression. Although CP is non progressive, 
secondary conditions like pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances can have progressive effects on an 
individuals’ functional abilities. Our study aimed to understand how these factors and physical 
activity impact mental health in children and youth with CP. Identifying factors that contribute to 
mental health symptoms may prevent the maintenance of these issues into adulthood. From our 
observational study, we found that these risk factors were predictive of mental health behaviours 
including behavioural, depressive and anxiety related symptoms in youth with CP. This study 
will help develop evidence-based interventions to treat these factors and have the potential to 
inform clinicians on the determinants of mental health outcomes. Individualized, targeted 
interventions can be developed to address the modifiable risk factors that threaten the wellbeing 
of children with CP.
