Humans are colonized by billions of bacteria but remain healthy because most microorganisms do not 
cause disease and the immune system is effective at eliminating microbes that enter our body. But some 
bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus can thwart the immune system’s defenses and cause disease. 
To treat these infections, drugs termed antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria. However, S. aureus and 
other pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance against many existing antibiotics, rendering these 
drugs obsolete. Antibiotic resistance has reached crisis proportions and is predicted to result in over 10 
million deaths annually by 2050 if new and effective antibiotics are not discovered. My research aims to 
find new antimicrobials to treat S. aureus infections. To date, I have discovered a molecule called 6-
thioguanine that prevents drug resistant S. aureus from causing skin infections by inhibiting its ability to 
make toxins that are responsible for this disease.

Children who are ‘late-to-talk’ have delayed language, but their other skills (e.g. play, motor,   
social) are typically developing. These children with delayed language skills are at risk for 
lifelong social and educational difficulties. The primary objective of this research is to assess the 
effectiveness Hanen’s Target WordTM Program for children who are late-to-talk and determine 
whether and how outcomes vary across children. In this waitlisted controlled study, families will 
be assigned to an experimental or control group with those in the experimental group beginning 
Target WordTM immediately, and those in the control group placed on a waiting list. Both groups 
will be assessed at four time points using standardized assessments of children’s language and 
social skills to determine overall language ability. The proposed research will generate new 
evidence for the effectiveness of Target WordTM and contribute to the literature on parent 
training programs for children with language difficulties and disorders.

Epistemic Injustice in Workplace Hierarchies

Almost no one can be outside the workplace. In workplaces, we are vulnerable to 
various kinds of injustice, and sometimes we do injustice to people. Epistemic injustice—a 
distinctive kind of injustice— in workplaces has not received due attention. Epistemic injustice 
occurs when people as knowers are not properly treated. Victims of epistemic injustice may be 
thought to be less trustworthy because of prejudice such as race. They may also find it hard to 
understand and express the injustice done to them because there is no resource for them to do 
so. I would like to examine theories of workplaces and try to identify epistemic injustice in 
workplaces. With the diagnosis of injustice in workplaces, we will be in a better position to cure 
injustice, to understand and fight with injustice, and to be a just and good person.

Ghosts of Madwomen Past: Historical and Psychiatric Madness on the Late
Twentieth-Century Operatic Stage
Insanity has been important to opera since the beginning of opera. For four hundred years, operas
have featured characters driven mad by love, jealousy, and shame. Some of these characters are among
opera’s most famous, and are still performed today. Over the past four centuries, though, cultural
understandings of what it means to be insane have changed many times. My research explores
twentieth-century operas with mad characters. In these operas, modern understandings of insanity and
mental illness contend with a centuries-old heritage of operatic and theatrical madness. These characters
still sing long, dramatic arias like their predecessors, but also show symptoms of twentieth-century
diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, agoraphobia, and alcoholism. Opera composers are not doctors, so these
medicalized portrayals of madness demonstrate the growing centrality of medical perspectives to insanity
as a concept, and provide insight into how people outside the medical field understand madness in the
twentieth century.
