Traditional clinical trials test whether a novel medical treatment works in ideal settings. But the 
real world is messy and unpredictable. Patients and doctors need to know whether medical 
treatments work in the context of routine clinical care. The solution: pragmatic trials. These 
trials are embedded into clinical settings and ideally include all patients who will receive 
treatment in clinical practice. But recruiting patients by obtaining their written informed 
consent may disrupt the workflow of busy clinics to the extent that the trial no longer mirrors 
clinical practice, consequently undermining the aim of the trial. Since consent is a central 
protection of patient autonomy, the question arises: how can the ends of autonomy and 
pragmatism both be served? My solution is to operationalize respect for autonomy as the 
requirement to obtain verbal consent with documentation in patients’ medical records. This 
solution promotes patient autonomy and facilitates pragmatic trial conduct.

Why I Write: My First Prize Woman
She was bent forward, like a tulip bent on its stem, like when you are looking for something for 
so long that you have forgotten what it was but you still remember the feeling of looking for 
something that belonged to you. Squinting her eyes, like the roaming wind making desert 
dunes, she would stand on her doorstep looking for someone to tell her stories. Neighbours 
ignored her because "she talks a lot", "she is living the past". But, she and I, we loved 
storytelling. So, she would talk for hours of her love, sorrow, joy and pain; and I would listen.
"This story is the voice of a woman who wanted to be heard and that is why I write", I walked 
down the stage holding her prize in my hands and I knew she was in the room standing upright, 
smiling.

Advanced computer simulation allows medical trainees and pre-operative planners 
to practice and plan surgical procedure in a virtual environment. Particularly, 
simulated bone-drilling applications allow users to input patient medical scans 
(such as a CT scan) that automatically convert to a 3D virtual scene. The purpose 
of my research was to design and implement an automated system capable of 
analyzing and recording simulated bone-drilling as it occurs in the virtual 
environment. Additionally, after the simulated procedure, the user may replay their 
performance, view statistics, and re-attempt chosen portions of the virtual surgery. 
Thus, reducing the barrier to train and evaluate surgical bone drilling procedures, 
such as mastoidectomy.

I am working on a dissertation that explores the function of nursery rhymes during the 
period of the Cold War. Specifically, I am planning to undertake a comparative study of 
children’s exposure to these artforms in the USA and the USSR in order to examine two 
questions: 1) How did individuals engage with existing nursery rhymes during the Cold War 
period? 2) What imaginative mediums for children were developed in response to the Cold War 
and how were they applied in everyday life?  
I hope that my project will reveal the ability of nursery rhymes to preserve and transmit 
socio-cultural values expressed through a culturally complex, texted musical tradition. In so 
doing, this work will lay the foundation for further study of children’s music during the Cold 
War, and will advance research in various fields, including musicology, Soviet and American 
studies, Cold War studies, and cultural studies.

“The Seed of Life” 
As one must prepare a fertile soil to grow a healthy plant from a seed, so 
does nature prepare the mother’s uterus for her egg to grow into a 
healthy baby. As the seed develops new roots to draw nutrients from the 
soil, the egg makes a new organ called the “placenta” which invades the 
uterus to draw nourishment for the baby. If the uterus is not ready, the 
placenta invades poorly, leading to a poorly grown baby and serious 
maternal disease called preeclampsia. 
Our lab has discovered many molecules that controls placental invasion, 
one of them called ‘decorin’. An overproduction of decorin by the uterus 
impairs baby’s development and makes the placenta sick. Fortunately, 
we discovered that increased level of decorin in mom’s blood can predict 
preeclampsia before the symptoms appear. We hope to design therapies 
to cure preeclampsia  and save the developing baby or this “seed of life”.

Using Robotic Telescopes to Observe Lunar Co-Orbital Asteroids 
As a Master’s student studying Astronomy here at Western University, my research involves an asteroid 
survey using remotely operated, robotic telescopes. I am looking for a unique subset of asteroids that 
have never been observed before. These asteroids -if they exist- would share the Moon's orbit. If 
discovered, they would provide researchers with the opportunity to do a long-term study on nearby 
(astronomically speaking!) asteroids, and potentially answer questions like whether asteroids played a 
role in bringing the necessities of life, like water or organic molecules, to our planet. This project also 
provides the opportunity to observe different types of asteroids that are quickly passing by Earth. This is 
exactly what happened on November 18th, 2020, when we observed a previously unknown asteroid, 
now designated ALA2xH. This provisional discovery has proven the capabilities of our continued survey.

Improving Interventions for Individuals with Trauma 
My interests in psychology pertain to technological innovations to psychological 
interventions and improving interventions for people with trauma histories, such as those with 
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex-PTSD (CPTSD). CPTSD is a newer diagnosis 
that addresses repeated or prolonged traumatic exposure throughout one’s lifetime. My current 
research focuses on virtual reality (VR) and neurofeedback applications to meditation to 
determine if these factors improve mindfulness and decrease distractibility. I intend on 
researching other intervention types, beginning with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and 
acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in VR to have a toolbox of interventions at my side 
ready to be catered to individuals seeking treatment. As I am interested in improving treatment 
for individuals who have experienced trauma, all of the interventions I implement and research 
will have a trauma-informed approach, meaning acknowledging the presence of trauma and 
allowing safety, trust, transparency, individual choices and empowerment.

How Do We Engage More Community Members in Active Music-Making?

How do we engage more community members in active music-making, rather than mere passive 
observation? This question guides my scholarly work as a composer, community musician, and music 
educator. For example, I interrogate the understudied ways in which composition and composers play a 
role in inclusive community “musicking”. This investigation began with an international study of 
composers, community music facilitators, and leaders, resulting in my relational composition theory. I 
have also considered how composers might help communities to discover their voices through 
community singing. Furthermore, I have branched out to examine how composers are prepared—or not 
prepared— in their studies for this work in communities. Motivated by love for others and belief in 
reclaiming community music-making’s centrality in what it means to be human, my own composition 
and leadership practices also come under scrutiny as I re-evaluate then adjust processes to align with 
my inclusive values.

Mental health benefits of physical activity in youth with cerebral palsy: a scoping review. 
 
Youth with cerebral palsy (CP) are at an increased risk for developing mental health 
problems. Physical activity (PA) may be an effective strategy to promote quality of life (QoL) 
and reduce mental health symptoms in conjunction with evidence-based therapies. However, 
limited research exists on which to base recommendations for PA interventions and inform 
future research. As such, a scoping review was conducted to describe existing studies examining 
the mental health outcomes (e.g., QoL, well-being, anxiety, and depression) of PA interventions 
in youth with CP. From the 21 studies included in the review, only one study assessed mental 
health symptoms of anxiety and depression following a PA intervention. The association 
between PA and QoL was examined in most studies, with mixed results. Ultimately, more 
research is needed regarding the benefits of PA on symptoms of mental health conditions, such 
as anxiety and depression, in youth with CP.

With the development of the computer aided design techonoloy, there are several different type of CAD 
tools, such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, ProE, UG NX, Catia, and there are accordingly product data 
management system (PDM) to manage these CAD files and their process. AutoCAD use PDM360 PDM 
system, Solidworks use E-PDM system, ProE Cero use Windchill PDM system, UGNX use Teamcenter 
PDM system, Catia use Enova PDM system. There are exchange stanadar between these CAD files. Such 
as STEPs etc, but there no exchange standard between those PDM systems. With the development of 
the Product Lifecycle manayment (PLM). There are more requiments form the user to exchange these 
data between different PDM systems and to other production systems, such ERP system. So the need of 
a PDM Data Exchange Standard is more important.
