People with brain injuries are four times more likely to suffer from mental health problems than 
the general population. These problems are prevalent and disabling, but they often go untreated 
for various reasons, including stigma and accessibility. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural 
therapy (ICBT) overcomes face-to-face therapy barriers by reaching a wider group of patients who 
experience unequal access to healthcare. However, a gap remains in its use and effectiveness 
among patients with brain injuries. Therefore, we created a specialized ICBT program tailored for 
individuals with brain injuries, and the goal is to significantly improve their health outcomes and 
mental health care delivery. The program emphasizes learning skills that individuals can 
implement into their daily lives to help manage their symptoms. We hope that through my research, 
we will get a better understanding of the vast potential of virtual mental healthcare and create 
pathways to make psychological services accessible and cost-effective.

Decolonizing ‘Femicide’ in International Frameworks: A Decolonial Feminist Approach  
 
The term femicide is currently defined in international legal and political frameworks as “the 
killing of women and girls because of their gender.” This definition, while seemingly 
straightforward, is limited by the way colonial logic constructs gender. By deconstructing 
colonial logic, it becomes evident that the gender binary itself, is a colonial attempt to 
dehumanize the group which it terms ‘Indigenous women.’ My research evaluates solutions to 
decolonizing ‘femicide’ in international frameworks through an extensive literature review of 
decolonial feminist scholarship. The only solution to observing femicide clearly, is to 
deconstruct the category based logic of colonial modernity.  In seeing beyond what is accepted as 
common sense, it becomes clear that race, gender, class, and space work congruously to 
construct the frame that sees Indigenous women as inhuman and disposable in colonial societies.

Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer globally, is a serious complication of 
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine leading to 
colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Studies show that CAC can arise from a rare cell in 
the intestine called a tuft cell. DNA methylation changes that can affect gene expression have 
previously been detected in CAC. In this study, I will test the hypothesis that inhibition of DNA 
methylation inhibits CAC formation. This will be investigated using the tuft cell derived CAC 
mouse model. In this model, a genetic and a pharmacologic approach will be used to inhibit 
DNA methylation. I will then further investigate the mechanism by which inhibition of DNA 
methylation decreases tumor formation. This study will provide insight into the role of DNA 
methylation in tuft cells on CAC formation and shed light on whether modulating DNA 
methylation can affect CAC.

Validity of Quality-of-Life Measurement in Economic Evaluations: Agreement between Western 
Ontario and McMasters Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the EuroQOL 5D (EQ5D) Utility scores 
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and knee is a common condition that eventually requires total joint 
replacement (TJR). The economic burden of OA was $2.9 billion in 2010 and is projected to be $ 7.9 billion 
by 2031, in Canada. Economic evaluations are commonly conducted through cost-utility analysis, where 
health benefits are measured using utility scores. One of the most common utility measures is the 
European Quality of Life (EQ-5D). OA research studies commonly use disease-specific quality of life tools 
such as the Western Ontario and McMaster’s Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) to derive utility 
scores; but the validity of this method is unknown. The purpose of this research is to determine the 
agreement between utility scores derived from WOMAC and the EQ-5D surveys among patients who have 
undergone TJR. The results of this study will support decision-makers with accurate estimates of the utility 
of TJR for OA patients.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Public Safety Organizations 
The mental health of public safety personnel, including police, firefighters, and 
paramedics, is a growing issue, requiring new and innovative solutions.  My doctoral work in the 
Faculty of Education’s EdD Program focused on understanding the human and financial costs of 
trauma-related mental health conditions, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in 
public safety organizations. Using adaptive and team leadership approaches, a plan for PTSD 
prevention, treatment, and return to work services was applied to an Ontario fire and rescue 
organization. The outcome of this work is a novel approach to addressing the impacts of PTSD 
on public safety personnel and their workplaces, with the potential to inform change initiatives 
municipally, provincially, and federally.

Research shows that in sub-Saharan Africa, gendered social norms impact food insecurity. 
Understanding how and why gender shapes food insecurity requires analyzing sociocultural 
norms that differ from place to place, meaning contextual research is needed. In northwestern 
Benin, gender and food security research has not been a focus. My research aims to fill this gap, 
revealing how interactions within the agrarian household are affected by food insecurity because 
of how men’s and women’s gendered identities, roles and responsibilities are shaped by 
sociocultural norms. Men tend to be seen as breadwinners, responsible for growing food. Due to 
structural factors such as environmental change, farming is becoming increasingly difficult, 
which leads to men often being ‘blamed’ for food insecurity. Meanwhile, women’s workloads 
are increasing to compensate for poor yields and they are frustrated with their husbands’ 
‘failures’ regarding food provisioning. Food insecurity has contributed to these gendered 
responsibilities being contested and renegotiated.

Title: How can single moms care for themselves and their children during a pandemic? 
 
I study how single mothers maintain their health and support their children’s health during a 
pandemic. Single mothers have unique challenges because they may not have another person 
helping in the home, and help outside the home may be restricted by public health rules. My 
research plan will answer 3 questions about their experiences: 1) How did family responsibilities 
change?  2) How do they implement health rules to prevent COVID-19, like social distancing 
and mask wearing; and what things affected those changes? and 3) How do they maintain other 
healthy behaviors like: healthy eating, exercise, and mental health?  I will use surveys and 
interviews to understand their experiences and needs, and then make recommendations. This 
issue is very meaningful to me because I grew up with a single mother in Ecuador and I saw her 
struggle to provide food, safety and a better life for her children.

Promoting Pre-Service Teachers’ Understanding and Implementation of Equity, Diversity, 
and Inclusion Practices 
 
Schools in Canada are hubs for students with diverse cultural, socio-economic, and racial 
backgrounds. Additionally, students come to their classrooms with unique interests, learning 
profiles, and achievement levels. Rather than adopting a “one-size-fits-all” approach, educators 
need to be well-prepared to implement inclusive and equitable teaching practices such as 
differentiated instruction (DI). Yet, despite policies encouraging these strategies, professional 
development initiatives that aim at enhancing teachers’ readiness to apply DI are limited. 
Furthermore, research on teachers’ implementation of DI in Ontario schools is scarce. Thus, we 
lack understanding in terms of whether the set policies are being effectively employed.  
 
Accordingly, my research tackles equity, diversity, and inclusion practices in Ontario science 
classes. The study explores the impact of DI-focused training integrated in one of the Teacher 
Education Program courses on science/STEM teacher candidates’ views and implementation of 
DI; on a hope that similar opportunities would promote teachers’ readiness in the future.
