Hypophonia, or quiet speech, is a common and disabling symptom in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). 
The causal mechanisms associated with hypophonia are uncertain. It has been proposed that 
hypophonia may be related to an impairment in the perception of one’s own loudness. This 
suggests that individuals with PD hear their own speech as abnormally loud and that they attempt 
to compensate for this perception deficit by speaking very quietly. To explore this further, I will 
conduct a speech loudness matching experiment. The experimental tasks will involve loudness 
matching of one’s own speech and pre-recorded speech, to different loudness targets while using 
different amplification levels. This study will provide new information about the potential role of 
a self-loudness perception deficit in the hypophonia associated with PD.

My research was first inspired by Fatty Legs, a memoir by residential school survivor, Margaret 
Pokiak-Fenton. When Margaret is forced to read a script expressing gratitude for being in 
residential school on radio, she makes the courageous decision to say nothing in hopes that her 
parents would understand the meaning of her unusual silence. My research considers the 
importance of listening to silences and non-dominant modes of communication in contemporary 
novels by Korean-North American and Korean female authors. Traditionally, women in Korea 
have been excluded from publicly speaking and often resorted to speaking in indirect manners. 
Their indirect communication such as song and body language are considered “silent” and 
mistaken as non-communication. But, if we listen carefully, forms of expression other than 
speech do communicate, even silence. How have we failed to listen to the various modes of 
communication of women? My research intends to start listening to the “silence”.

How do we predict rewards? : What animal models can reveal about basic behaviours
Making associations between environmental cues that predict positive outcomes and adjusting
our behaviours accordingly is critical for our survival. Over time, these associations can become
inflexible due to repeated exposure to the same cues. For instance, driving to work might take
less effort due to repeated exposure to the same street signs. This is known as
stimulus-response learning and is known to be implicated in a brain region called the striatum.
However, not much is known about the underlying mechanisms of this form of learning. My work
seeks to use animal models to determine whether a specific population of neurons found in the
striatum are important for stimulus-response learning. Using cognitive assessments, while
simultaneously silencing these neurons in mice, will help to further elucidate the underlying
mechanisms. By understanding the basic mechanisms of this form of learning we can
understand diseases where this learning is impaired, including Parkinson’s disease.

I study future event thinking: the ability to project the self forward in time to pre-experience an 
event. Future event thinking is relevant for behaviour regulation and involves gathering 
information to anticipate future events. It also involves placing these events in a coherent 
autobiographical context to be perceived as likely occurrences. Since our futures are individual 
phenomena, I take a tailored approach to assess how people simulate future events, what details 
they use in the description, and the phenomenological experience. Thus far, my findings show 
that likely events are experienced as sensorily real and with a lot of details, but only if associated 
knowledge is available. If events are unknown but likely to happen, people can still simulate 
them, but in broad ways. These results may be of interest for the understanding of mental health 
issues associated with unfamiliar future-prolonged situations such as culture shock, immigration, 
or the COVID pandemic.

The current push to electrify transportation in response to climate change has sparked 
growing interest in deep seabed mineral resources. Commercial exploitation is now imminent. 
Scientists and policy-makers warn that gaps in international law and governance leave highly 
biodiverse and poorly understood ecosystems unprotected and species at risk of extinction. My 
research will analyze the Draft Exploitation Regulations of the International Seabed Authority’s 
Mining Code governing deep seabed mining, and their relationship to the forthcoming Biodiversity 
Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement. I will focus on the Arctic region, where melting sea ice 
is rapidly altering the marine environment, opening the area to new economic activity. My 
geographical approach is intended to contribute to wider discussions regarding the 
appropriateness of deep seabed mining, and will include policy recommendations to establish 
high seas marine protected areas in the Central Arctic Ocean.

Development of a Measure for Capturing Conversation Difficulties and their Social and 
Emotional Impacts for a Rare Dementia  
 
Abstract:  
Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a rare dementia syndrome in which language (reading, 
writing, speaking, and understanding) is the primary impairment with minimal effects on other 
cognitive domains until later stages. Communication breakdowns create barriers that have 
devastating impacts on quality of life (QoL), relationship well-being, and family dynamics for 
persons with PPA and their loved ones. The impact of PPA is magnified by the fact that it is a 
younger onset dementia, often affecting people in their 50’s and 60’s. Despite this, there are few 
robust measures for evaluating communication changes in this disease. This has been a limiting 
factor in designing clinical trials for treating these devastating communication difficulties. My 
research study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of a measure developed for 
persons with Alzheimer’s dementia in PPA with the goal of optimizing the measure for use in 
PPA clinical trials.

Reconciliation Requires Housing: The Role of Housing in Enhancing Access to Higher Education for 
Indigenous Learners 
 
Housing is well established as an important social-economic factor in health and well-being. In the realm 
of higher education, researchers have consistently demonstrated access to student housing positively 
influences the experiences and completion rates of post secondary learners.  However, little is know about 
the student housing experiences of Indigenous learners. 
 
Western University, like most Canadian universities, have launched numerous initiatives in response to 
the Truth and Reconciliation of Canada’s “94 Calls to Action”.  Demonstrable change is happening in the 
classrooms across campuses from coast to coast to coast.  However, the relationship between student 
housing and academic success for Indigenous learners has not yet been a part of these “reconciliation” 
initiatives.  This community-driven case study of student housing experiences of Indigenous learners at 
Western University articulate why reconciliation at Canadian universities requires housing.

Trauma Patterns Among Pedestrians and Cyclists Involved in a Motor Vehicle Collision 
 
Of the 1.35 million deaths that occur annually worldwide due to motor vehicle collisions (MVCs), 
more than half of these involve pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. In Canada, there is an 
increasing number of motor vehicle pedestrian (7%) and cyclist (2.5%) collisions compared to 
previous years. In Ontario, these MVCs involving pedestrian and cyclist deaths are investigated 
by the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario which include autopsies done by pathologists who 
document the injuries sustained. My research involves collecting injury data from the pathologists’ 
reports and crash data (vehicle type, speed, impact zone, location) from the police report to 
understand the injury mechanisms. Using this information, I plan on creating a predictive model 
using machine learning that can be used not only by pathologists to assist coroners and police 
investigators in collision reconstruction (especially hit and run’s), but also provide evidence-based 
data to emergency or trauma centers for triage.

Title: The State-Trait Model of Cheerfulness: Psychometric Validation, Cross-Cultural Findings, 
and its Associations with Well-Being  
 
The State-Trait Cheerfulness Inventory (STCI) measures the temperamental basis of humor 
involving cheerfulness, seriousness, and bad mood. The present research addresses two main 
objectives to: (1) assess the reliability and validity of the newly constructed measures of the 
STCI and (2) broaden the understanding of the theoretical framework of the STCI and its 
association with humor and well-being. The first part provides evidence for the reliability and 
validity of the English, Italian, and Chinese versions of the STCI. The second part addresses the 
association between cheerfulness and well-being through the lenses of humor traits, self-esteem 
and behavioural activation, resiliency, and creativity. The results provide psychometric evidence 
for the newly developed versions of the tool and new insight that advances a coherent and 
multifaceted theoretical framework on the pathways in which the state-trait model of 
cheerfulness is associated with humor and psychological well-being.

Title: Where to? The Study of Navigational Accommodations for Mental Disabilities 
 
Many mental disabilities affect a person's navigational abilities, making even the simplest spaces 
within an urban landscape or the inner regions of a building to be complex. Currently, 
accommodations within architecture are more directed towards assisting physical disabilities, 
and those with mental and invisible disabilities are lost in their wake. Architecture and urban 
landscapes serve as a way to which I examine how the environment impacts persons with 
disabilities, especially those with invisible disabilities and/or mental disabilities, such as 
Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, Dyslexia, etc.  
Through the study and the development of navigational technology, I will develop ways of 
accommodating such individuals by providing them with the assistance they need to navigate 
through such spaces while allowing them to retain their sense of agency.
