A composite as one of the popular materials is a combination of at least two components. It is 
important to predict the resulting physical property of a composite based on its component’s 
properties, instead of direct measurement that can be expensive. The first step of my thesis is to 
find the effective factors affecting the electrical conductivity of a carbon-filled polymer composite. 
Next, I should clarify how these effective factors can be quantified. I might need to perform some 
polymer molding simulations. After such simulations, the state of filler dispersion, filler alignment 
inside the composite, and other effective factors can be quantified. Then, I will look at the current 
mathematical models predicting electrical conductivity. Finally, I should report the problem of the 
current mathematical models and recommend a new model or a correction on one of the current 
models to resolve one or more disadvantages of the electrical conductivity model.

Video games to save lives: Navigating the Body with Virtual Reality 
Joeana Cambranis-Romero 
I develop “video games” to assist surgeries. Yes, you read it right.  
I’m a PhD student from Mexico, and I am part of an amazing research lab that develops 
special tools to help surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures to perform therapy 
without traditional surgery. In our lab, we use virtual and augmented reality technologies 
when developing these tools, like creating a video game to navigate inside the body!  
My work focuses on liver cancer. Currently, I am developing a navigation system that 
includes a virtual laser line to show the surgeons where a therapeutic needle will end up 
before it is inserted into the liver to treat the cancer. I use virtual reality, math and lots of 
engineering to achieve this!  
I hope my work can enhance surgeons' confidence when performing any kind of needle 
insertion, by helping them navigate around delicate body parts, reducing patient trauma in 
the process.

Abstract 
Human capital represents a vital resource for a nation development. Benin government, through its 
support for the National Integrated School Feeding Program, has sought to address this issue. However, 
there is a gap of evidence on cognitive abilities and academic performance of beneficiaries. This study 
was aim to assess determinants of school performance in Benin republic. Cognitive were assessed by 
using digit span and verbal fluency. 24-hour recall method was used. Socioeconomic and food insecurity 
data were collected through a questionnaire. Mean of school grades in all subjects learned were 
considered pupil’s school performance. Pupils consuming more than three foods daily were more likely 
to perform well in grades. A linear regression revealed that cognitive abilities, absenteeism, electricity, 
having breakfast, family size, and mother’s job were significantly associated to academic performance. 
Policies to extant electrification, women empowerment interventions are recommended to improve 
human resource quality to impulse development in Africa.

How we walk, or our gait patterns, can impact our physical and mental health, as 
well as our social well-being. Aging and diseases can negatively affect gait, but external 
cues like music might help improve these deficits. During my PhD studies, I explored 
how non-invasive brain stimulation targeting a motor region linked to gait initiation and 
rhythm perception could enhance the benefits of musical cues on walking. Initial results 
with young, healthy adults showed that when participants synchronized their steps to the 
beat of the music while walking with brain stimulation, their steps per minute increased. 
The next step in my studies is to test these effects in older adults and people with 
Parkinson's disease. With the incidence of parkinsonism in Canada expected to rise by 
50% between 2011 and 2031, this research could lead to new rehabilitation programs 
combining brain stimulation and music, especially for aging and disease-affected 
populations.

Exploring the Lives of Women-Headed Households in Sri Lanka 
 
Sri Lanka's civil war from 1980 to 2009 led to many male deaths and injuries, leaving about 25% 
of households headed by women. Unfortunately, these women often face unique challenges 
that policymakers have not fully addressed. My doctoral research aims to fill this gap by 
collecting data on women-headed households (WHHs) across different ethnic and religious 
groups, including Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims. First, I will document the various types of 
WHHs and their origins. Next, I will identify the specific challenges and opportunities they face, 
considering factors like ethnicity, religion, age, education, and disability. This research will help 
design better social, economic, and legal policies to support these households. By 
understanding their experiences, I hope to find solutions that not only benefit WHHs in Sri 
Lanka but also inform policies in other post-conflict regions. This work will also aid Canadian 
foreign policy and humanitarian efforts in similar contexts.

Global socio-environmental justice: amplifying the voice of Brazilian Water Peoples
Environmental disruption disproportionately affects marginalized and racialized communities worldwide.
Indigenous peoples and Black working classes are more vulnerable to food insecurity, health problems,
and poor living conditions. In Brazil's Northeast, the most unequal region of the country, the Water Peoples
are mostly Black artisanal fishers, who endure the consequences of invasive enterprises, water pollution,
and global warming. As a Black Brazilian with public service experience, I am committed to addressing
this pressing problem in collaboration with communities in the Recife metropolitan area, where I am from.
My objective is to counter the exclusion of the Water Peoples in the news media and policy-making, which
often perpetuates the exploitation model of production fueled by systemic marginalization and racism.
Research usually fails to work towards a solution in different local realities, so I will put into motion an
active collaborative research centered on the community members.
