Canada’s graduate students face numerous demands. The Mindfulness Ambassador 
Program (MAP) uses an evidence-based, holistic curriculum that teaches mindfulness strategies to 
promote well-being. Stress is often central to graduate students’ experiences, which can negatively 
impact their well-being, self-awareness, and interpersonal relationships. However, to date, no 
formal research has been conducted using the MAP for graduate students.  
 
My research will: 1) qualitatively explore graduate students’ perspectives of the MAP’s 
influence on their experiences of stress and their relationships with themselves and meaningful 
others; and 2) quantitatively assess if MAP participation elicits changes in graduate students’ levels 
of stress, self-awareness, and/or interpersonal skills.   
      
     Twelve graduate students will participate in a Zoom-based, six-week MAP. I will be collecting 
data at two time points (baseline and immediate post-intervention), and then use thematic analysis 
and paired t-tests to evaluate the data. Findings will help determine the applicability and potential 
of the MAP for graduate students.

A virtual intervention to support preschoolers with autism 
 
Families who have a young child with autism have identified communication in social situations 
as a priority area for intervention. The Hanen Centre in Ontario developed the More Than 
Words® program, where parents learn strategies to support their child’s development of social 
communication and play skills. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the program to be delivered to 
families virtually. In partnership with the Hanen Centre, my doctoral research explores the 
program’s effectiveness in improving children’s skills development and parent-child interactions, 
and the families’ experiences participating in the program virtually. The results will provide the 
Hanen Centre and over 5,000 clinicians who deliver the program worldwide with quality 
improvements and program adaptions they can implement to ensure a positive, impactful 
experience for all families. Beyond the pandemic, a virtual delivery option would eliminate 
accessibility barriers and provide more families with the opportunity to access this program.

Intentional measures are needed to attract and retain a more diverse group of students in order to fill the 
national skilled labour shortage. Through a case study focused on balanced enrolment by gender in trades 
training, I consider a number of potential solutions before focusing on policies and practices related to 
recruitment, application, and admission of women into two programs. Principles of transformational 
leadership and transformative leadership theory are entwined with a change roadmap and a change 
process of appreciative inquiry to create a matrix for change. Lessons learned from this case study can be 
applied to other programs that are inequitable in representation, whether by gender, socioeconomic status, 
race, or other differentiation. The immediate goal is to ameliorate an imbalance in student enrolment, and 
the larger goal is to help the institution’s social justice focus and responsibilities progress.

How to wisely use the resource at the edge of network? 
 
I am working with Prof. Hanan Lutfiyya on fog computing as an extension of cloud computing. 
We believe in the future network architectures, all the devices around us can be a part of the 
computing system such as routers, switches, and unused personal computing devices. Users can 
easily borrow computing power from the nearby devices instead of executing all tasks on their 
own devices or far away cloud center.  The setup of fog computing requires us to take computing 
limitation, power usage and geographical awareness into the considerations. We are exploring 
the possible challenges and the capabilities of the current resource management solutions of 
cloud computing into the fog computing environment. We are currently focusing on task 
offloading algorithms in semi-centralized fog computing environment.

My research focuses on suicide in twentieth-century Japanese literature as a reaction to the nation’s 
rapid modernization efforts as it quickly transitioned from a feudalist state to its current position 
as an ultra-modernist, technologically driven economic powerhouse in the post-World War II 
international arena. My research focuses on two novels, No Longer Human (1948) and Runaway 
Horses (1969), and attempts to trace the protagonists’ suicides within the larger context of grand 
societal and cultural changes, showcasing unique cases of individual alienation during a unique 
setting in world history.

Inspiring Minds Showcase 
Within the field of ophthalmology, the development and implementation of artificial 
intelligence and machine learning (AIML) has grown substantially in the past decade. For 
cataracts, researchers have used images of the human eye to train their AI algorithm to screen 
for cataracts and provide patients with a fast and accurate diagnosis. The use of AIML has 
demonstrated effective use for offering diagnosis services to individuals in under-developed, 
under-serviced, and remote areas. However, there are gaps in the current literature on the 
aggregated diagnostic accuracy of these ML diagnostic programs, and its cost-effectiveness 
compared to in-person screening procedures. Therefore, this thesis aims to evaluate the 
effectiveness of ML classifiers by 1) assessing the diagnostic accuracy through a meta-analysis, 
and 2) conducting a cost-effectiveness analysis for a theoretical implementation of an ML 
cataract screening program in rural Nepal.

Mobile Neuroimaging and Mobility in Parkinson’s Disease 
Attention, an important aspect of human cognition, is needed for safe mobility and navigation through the 
environment. With age, the ability to move and navigate through the world requires greater cognitive resources. 
Previous brain imaging research has shown that mobility impairments are associated with reduced attention. However, 
previous work was limited to assessing attention while participants were stationary and/or in a laboratory environment, 
which does not necessarily translate to what would occur in the real-world. My research will use mobile neuroimaging 
during walking to observe and compare brain activity in a real-world environment across younger adults, older adults 
(with and without a history of falls), and adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. These findings have the potential 
to expand current understandings of brain function in Parkinson’s disease, human mobility, and fall risk using real-
world methods and technology.

Nearly 2.4 million Canadians currently live with heart disease. The current standard of 
care is participation in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (EBCR). Improving aerobic fitness 
reduces the severity of symptoms and improves prognosis. However, almost 50% of patients 
enrolled in EBCR display either minor increases or reductions in aerobic fitness as measured by 
V̇O2peak, suggesting that half of these patients see no improvements in their quality of life. 
Maximal aerobic tests used to identify V̇O2peak are often symptom-limited in heart disease 
populations, leading to an underestimation of true aerobic capacity. There are two submaximal 
metabolic boundaries that occur during incremental exercise, the lactate threshold and respiratory 
compensation point. Improving these thresholds results in improvements in activities of daily 
living and may be an effective way to predict response to EBCR without the use of maximal 
aerobic testing, while establishing new guidelines to widen the range of patients who benefit 
from EBCR.

Research Summary: 
 
Current literature emphasizes ways to improve coping after the event and possible outcomes yet 
fails to explore the impact on self-worth. Self-worth is contingent in various areas depending on 
the individual, and when these areas are targeted, self-worth decreases resulting in the 
development of symptoms of anxiety and depressive disorders, and poor overall wellbeing. 
Experiences of violence and harassment disrupt internal schemas developed about how the world 
works, which results in the reorganization of these norms. Therefore, when an individual 
experiences violence/harassment at their place of work, they may determine that this is due to 
personal characteristics or behaviours; thus, resulting in lower self-worth and dissatisfaction with 
their work and work environment. Using a grounded theory approach, I will conduct interviews 
with those who have experienced violence/harassment in the workplace. The final thesis will 
describe the findings and include interview quotes that have been screened to maintain 
participant anonymity.
