Amid rapidly evolving scientific data, were hospitals employing evidenced-based policymaking during 
the COVID-19 pandemic? This research takes up calls to examine maternity wards where emerging 
research highlights the negative mental health impacts of policies such as "Birthing Alone" during the 
pandemic (Friesen et al., 2021). Cumulative Inequality Theory suggests that these impacts may have 
negative health consequences on later life outcomes for mothers and infants. This study employs a 
three-pronged approach: a content analysis of hospital policies within maternity wards in Ontario; a 
quantitative analysis examining odds of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality depending on race 
and socioeconomic background; and a qualitative review of maternal agency/privilege by interviewing 
mothers that selected home births over hospital births during the pandemic. Much like previous 
pandemics, COVID-19 has exacerbated social inequalities (Mamelund & Dimka, 2021), thus making it 
imperative that we examine mechanisms to alleviate negative health impacts on vulnerable populations.

Launching hydrogen energy into life now: general method for 
catalysts design 
 
The severe global warming and energy crisis require human beings to alter fossil fuels with novel, 
clean and renewable energy resources. Hydrogen energy is the ultimate goal for our society due to 
overwhelming environmental benefits and regeneration properties. However, applying hydrogen 
energy into practical life is a huge challenge since the reaction velocity is quite slow and the cost 
from noble metal Platinum catalysts is so high. Aiming to these two critical problems, by general 
industrial synthetic approach, for the first time, I incorporated several special cheap elements into 
commercial Platinum carbon black. The as prepared catalyst achieved 2-fold greater activity and 
outstanding stability compared with commercial one. My work will provide general guidance for 
how to improve reaction velocity and reduce practical cost, and thus accelerating practical 
application of hydrogen energy.

Law tends to be reactive: a problem arises, and then a law is made to address it. In the present 
age of rapid technological change (which often features unintended consequences), law must 
adapt to become predictive and forward looking. Consider the context of human space activities 
and the rising dangers associated with space debris. For laws to address these issues, foresight is 
imperative but often lacking. While science fiction is overlooked or even mocked by scholars as 
irrelevant fantasy, it can provide useful predictions regarding future legal problems and help law 
be proactive. Science fiction’s ability to speculate and predict allows humanity’s prowess for 
imagination to be brought to bear as a useful tool to address these emerging legal problems. The 
time is now to buckle up and expand our thought and legal horizons. Technology is moving fast; 
science fiction can help the law keep up.

This research is to explore mental healthcare for youths 15 to 25, in Cameroon specifically in the two 
Anglophone Regions where a liberation struggle has been going on for the past six years. The purpose is 
to answer these questions: 
What do youths understand by mental health? 
How do they define emotions such as happiness or sadness? 
What are some of the challenges youths experience  
Which resources are available locally to help the youth deal with the challenges?  
The study will look at the local or cultural options for mental healthcare as well as the clinical options. 
This is to acknowledge the fact that the absence of clinical facilities may not necessarily imply an 
absence of mental healthcare.  
The goal is that results from the study could help in providing mental healthcare that is adapted to the 
culture and the current needs of the youths.

Whether academia should be ‘opened’ is a contentious and evolving issue globally. Open 
education (OE) – as the sharing, use, and reuse of resources, pedagogies, and teaching practices 
– has gained momentum by challenging, transforming, and even displacing systems which 
exclude, disenfranchise, and marginalize members of both the public and academic communities. 
Traditional, dominant systems rooted in the corporatization and monetization of educational 
processes are problematic because they create barriers that restrict access, agency, ownership, 
participation, and experience. OE approaches include wide ranging solutions from free open 
educational resources to open access of scholarly research. A shifting landscape between open 
and closed, coupled with flaws and weaknesses in OE solutions themselves, create issues and 
tensions needing closer interrogation. My study identifies a research gap in how OE is 
conceptualized within Canadian higher education policy discourse and aims to provide critical 
insight into power relations, equity, and social justice.

If artificial intelligence is so smart, why can’t it explain itself? Machine learning systems, the 
leading-edge of AI, are powerful, complex, consequential, opaque, and not very forthcoming. 
Systems like Amazon, Google, and others are part of our everyday experience. We need them to 
explain themselves. “I can’t tell you” or “I don’t know” aren’t an acceptable answers. The field 
of “explainable AI” (XAI) is about getting machine learning systems to tell us what they did, 
why they did it, and why they didn’t do something else instead. How can we help machine 
learning systems make better explanations? Enter folk theories. Folk theories are the beliefs 
people hold about how machine learning systems work. They may be not fully accurate, but they 
are functional. They help people use the system. Having folk theories and XAI work together 
allows machines to better understand humans and humans to better understand machines. Win-
win.
