Title: Confounding Sleep: Narrative as Evidence in Sleep Paralysis 
Just as you are about to fall asleep, a menacing presence enters your room. You try to scream, 
but no sound escapes you. You are stuck in terror, unable to move a muscle. Your eyes are 
locked, watching as it edges closer.  
You muster a final surge of energy to escape —  
now free, you’re unsure if you were just dreaming. 
This experience of vivid, realistic hallucinations that occur in the twilight state between waking 
and sleeping is called sleep paralysis. Roughly one in three people experience a form of sleep 
paralysis at some point in their lives. Scientific description of this phenomenon remains elusive. 
However, we can begin to decipher the traumatic and gripping affect through literary and visual 
culture. By proposing a health humanities model that illustrates narrative as a necessary form of 
evidence, I examine how science and literature are mutually transformative in investigating and 
demystifying sleep paralysis.

 Pressure injuries (PI) are a concern as Canadians age and the complexity of
care increases across care settings (RNAO, 2011). The overall prevalence of PI in
Canada is estimated to be 26% across healthcare institutions (Woodbury &
Houghton, 2004). Nurses play a pivotal role in the assessment, prevention,
treatment, and monitoring of PI. To improve the accuracy and objectivity of
wound assessment, Swift Medical has designed the world’s first hyperspectral
device that attaches to smartphones to help clinicians assess wounds and
improve patient outcomes (Swift, 2022). The Ray captures infrared
thermography feature that provides a rapid, non-contact, and non-invasive
technology to improve their wound assessments (Lin et al., 2021). 
How Does it Work? 
The thermogram is generated by thermal radiation from the body that is
colourized for review by clinicians. Thermographs can help clinicians detect
early inflammation in subcutaneous tissue or abnormal blood flow (Lin et al.,
2021).

About the Author 
I am a Registered Nurse who works the Post Anesthetic Recovery room in
Kingston Ontario. I am pursuing my Master's of Nursing in Leadership and
Professional Practice in hopes to expand on my leadership abilities and work to
improve the nursing profession. I am very excited to be have been placed with the
Swift Medical Team for my final placement. Working alongside my supervisors I
have conducted a literature search  regarding the current use of thermography in
the assessment and treatment of Pressure Injuries. This research will be used to
guide clinical eduction regarding the Ray 1 Thermography feature.

Networks of resistance: a regional analysis of extractive conflicts in Central America 
 
Mining companies exploit natural resources in Central America, one of the most dangerous regions in the 
world for activists, subject to increased control and repression by both the state and corporations as well as 
human rights violations. In response, social and environmental movements in the region have formed 
alliances to resist mining operations and promote Environmental Justice (EJ) such as the Central American 
Alliance on Mining. This dissertation explores three case studies of mining conflicts in Central America: 
Escobal (Guatemala), Guapinol (Honduras), and El Dorado (El Salvador). My research will address how 
alliances transform the dynamics of activism and campaigning by promoting EJ and modifying the spaces 
available for the pursuit of justice. Through the lenses of political ecology, political settlements theory, 
networks of resistance, and communication, I will use qualitative case study research methods to examine 
the perspective and goals of activists, community leaders, and movements’ struggles against mining.

Title: ‘You are what you eat’: exploring relationships between nutrients and gut function

We consume a variety of nutrients each day, providing our bodies with the energy required to 
survive. But how does our body respond to different nutrients? That is where my research lies. 
Bacterial inhabitants of the gut contribute to gastrointestinal function by affecting the way in 
which nutrients are digested and utilized. For instance, following consumption of complex 
carbohydrates such as barley, oats, and beans, our resident gut bacteria produce short-chain fatty 
acids (SCFAs). Interestingly, a higher intake of fermentable fibers can alleviate symptoms of 
metabolic diseases, such as, type 2 diabetes and obesity, with a potential mechanism being 
attributed to the increased production of SCFAs. I will investigate the signaling pathways that 
SCFAs activate in the gut to better understand how gut bacteria can influence gastrointestinal 
function.  Our research will be important in developing novel therapeutic strategies for the 
prevention and management of metabolic diseases.

Imagination and reflexivity are an essential part of my life, and it allows my past to emerge 
into my present and extend to the unknown future. As a female Chinese international student 
studying at a Canadian university, I view my identities as multiple, and I often stand at the 
intersectional point of these identities. I intend to start with several land-based reflections to 
reveal the different proximity to different places I have been. These places are where I live, 
grow, and study from these experiences and how resilience takes place as my identity 
changes, and I enter the academy and higher education. I want to explore the process of 
opening the locked door when I bring proximity to the community that is unknown to me 
compared to studying remotely due to the pandemic. Although in my autoethnography, it is 
the process of becoming resilient and dialectical, it is also a profound realization of 
transformational learning.

Evaluation of copper as the corrosion barrier for nuclear waste containers

Copper is a remarkably corrosion-resistant metal and will be used as the corrosion barrier for used nuclear 
fuel containers. Used fuel containers are a part of the Canadian design for the safe disposal of nuclear 
waste in a deep geological repository (DGR). In the DGR, salts, humidity, and high temperature will be 
present and will provide the conditions for corrosion to proceed. I use quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) 
and resistance probe techniques to investigate the corrosion behavior of copper under DGR conditions. A 
QCM is a kind of balance that uses the change in frequency of a copper-coated quartz crystal to detect 
mass changes on the nanogram scale. I use a resistance probe to measure the change in electrical 
resistance of a copper element to detect thickness changes due to corrosion. This research aims to verify 
the capability of copper to resist corrosion for the specified period (1,000,000 years).

Visible minority essential immigrant workers in Canada have a more difficult time coping with 
the pandemic situation than other groups. Furthermore, they often are required to have 
multiple jobs to support themselves and their transitional dependents (Amoyay & Abada, 2016; 
Kuuire, Arku, Luginnah, Buzzelli & Abada, 2016). Visible minority immigrant women working as 
personal support workers in long-term care facilities and other frontline jobs are at increased 
risk for contracting the virus due to the gendered nature of low-wage work (Gatzweiler, 
Rozenblat, Su & Luginaah, 2020). This project is interested in responding to the impacts of 
COVID-19 on essential immigrant workers in the Windsor area. Its aim is to investigate the 
challenges of immigrant essential workers and how to better prepare them for future 
pandemics. Researchers, employers, and policymakers must become aware of the unique 
circumstances and the full range of experiences of these essential workers during the COVID-19 
pandemic.

Gender Roles in the COVID-19 Pandemic: 
Perceptions and Experiences of Immigrant Women in Canada

Gender roles are formed when sex differences (i.e., women’s reproductive ability and men’s 
physical strength) are stereotyped as appropriate social behaviours. Research conducted in 
various countries (e.g., Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, etc.) reported a strong 
association between the COVID-19 pandemic and increased marginalization of women. To add 
to the literature, my doctoral study addresses: How do immigrant women in Canada perceive, 
experience, and negotiate with gender roles in interpersonal, social, community, cultural, and 
institutional spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic? With the support of immigrant-serving 
organizations in Canada, I will interview 40-50 first-generation immigrant women. Employing 
grounded theory to analyze the data, I will develop a strengths-based model that explains 
immigrant women coping with gender roles during the ongoing pandemic. Overall, this study 
highlights the COVID-19 pandemic as a social justice issue and underscores the need for gender-
based services to support immigrant women during post-pandemic recovery and future national 
crises.
