Trust, Distrust, and Guilt in those with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder 
 
My work is in the moral psychology tradition of feminist philosophy. I am curious about how 
those with obsessive-compulsive disorder experience trust and distrust in themselves and others, 
and how they experience guilt. It seems to me from lived experience and literature on the 
disorder that there is something unique in the affective experience and frequency of experiencing 
guilt and (self)distrust within the OCD community. Diving into philosophical analysis, I am 
guided by the question of how this influences their interactions with themselves, others, and the 
social institutions they are a part of or rely upon. More importantly, how can we incorporate this 
insight to reduce harms from those interactions, specifically with institutions?

What happens when fairness becomes negotiable? This research explores the 
ethical and interpretive tensions of intentional misrepresentation (IM) in parasport 
classification—where athletes may exaggerate or minimize impairments to gain 
competitive advantage. Classification is designed to ensure equity by grouping 
athletes based on disability type and severity. Yet, when athletes manipulate this 
process, it undermines trust, distorts outcomes, and challenges the legitimacy of 
competition. Using Foucauldian discourse analysis, this study examines how 
power, knowledge, and embodiment intersect in classification. Four Canadian 
athletes with physical disabilities participated in semi-structured interviews, 
offering insight into how classification is experienced not just as a technical 
process, but as a deeply personal and political one. Their narratives reveal how IM 
reshapes the meaning of performance and fairness. This research invites a 
rethinking of classification systems—centering athlete voices to uphold integrity in a 
sport landscape that is constantly evolving.

Growing up in a rural community in Nigeria, my upbringing provided important informal 
educational experiences, enabling me to acquire life skills such as perseverance, gratitude, and 
collaboration. As most of the learning happened unintentionally, parents naturally role-played as 
teachers, facilitating generational transfer of skills, knowledge, values, and attitudes grounded in 
a traditional belief system. Informed by this insight, my Ph.D. research investigates the impacts of 
teachers’ attitudes and beliefs on the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development 
(ESD), in Ontario K-8 school classrooms. The study intends to highlight the boundless benefits of 
a well-designed and intended curriculum, while addressing the gaps in curriculum implementation 
stemming from teachers’ attitudes and beliefs toward ESD. The research investigates challenges, 
opportunities, adaptations, and local influences experienced by teachers, offering a comprehensive 
insight into the implementation of ESD to provide actionable support, resources, and frameworks 
tailored to overcoming challenges for teachers, policymakers, and curriculum developers.

Understanding the patterns of genetic engineering

Patterns are all around us. Some patterns are simple and easy to predict, others 
require more complex systems to understand. For the CRISPR-Cas9 system, 
commonly used in genetic engineering, subtle sequence patterns of the target 
DNA significantly influence activity. However, these patterns are generally too 
complex for even an expert researcher to identify.  
Machine learning provides way to extract meaning from the complex patterns in 
DNA. By learning from experimental data, models can accurately predict sgRNA/
Cas9 activity. But there is more then just predictions. Models can provide insights 
into the molecular mechanisms at play. Through this, machine learning becomes 
something more: a lens for discovery. With our series of models, crisprHAL, we 
provide not just an accurate tool for genetic engineers, but a method by which to 
explore the biology underlying the CRISPR-Cas9 system.

Understanding the Microstructural and Corrosion Behaviour of Natural Copper 
The corrosion of metals in our oxidizing environment poses a significant challenge to our 
metal-based society, both economically and environmentally. Yet, despite the tendency of 
metals to seek more stable oxidized states, nature has produced copper deposits that have 
persisted in the metallic state for geological ages, such as the billion-year-old copper of the 
Keweenaw Peninsula (Michigan). My research focuses on understanding the underlying basis 
for the superb, extremely long-term corrosion performance of natural copper materials in 
underground environments and determining whether the features that confer such longevity to 
natural copper are present in manufactured copper materials. I have been studying natural 
copper specimens from various mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula region of Michigan, using 
electrochemical and surface analytical techniques. Overall, this work will be helpful and 
informative in various industrial applications of copper, including the safe and permanent 
disposal of used nuclear fuel in Canada and other countries.

What if fiction is not just about stories, but strategies? My research brings game theory into 
literature to show how novels simulate the complex choices people make under pressure: when to 
trust, when to betray, when to act with compassion even when it defies logic. I read characters not 
just as people, but as players in high-stakes games navigating shifting alliances, power imbalances, 
and moral dilemmas. 
But the twist? These characters often refuse to play “rationally.” They break the rules. They 
sacrifice. By combining mathematics, philosophy, and storytelling, I explore how literature reveals 
the limits of cold strategy—and the power of human unpredictability. 
This interdisciplinary project turns fiction into a mirror for our real-world decisions, from global 
conflict to everyday relationships. It shows that novels are not escapes from reality, they are 
simulations of it. And sometimes, they teach us that the smartest move is to be more human.

What happens with a hip replacement when we sit, climb stairs, or twist to reach something? 
While implants are designed to restore mobility, even well-positioned components can collide in 
ways that cause discomfort, wear, or failure—a hidden battle called impingement. My research 
brings this invisible clash into focus using 3D models and innovative imaging like 
radiostereometric analysis (RSA) to track real implant positions during movement. By simulating 
activities of daily living, I identify when and where components come dangerously close—down 
to sub-millimeter precision. This method allows me to compare hip replacements performed with 
patient-specific computer navigation to the traditional one-size-fits-all method, revealing how 
subtle differences in implant alignment can influence impingement risk across different postures. 
Through this lens, we move beyond one-dimensional assessments and into dynamic, 
personalized care, bringing us one step closer to hip replacements that don’t just fit, but truly 
function.

Relations Not Relationships: Connecting Value and Values on Mobile Dating Apps 
 
Dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, or Coffee Meets Bagel transform our personal details-- 
names, hobbies, or preferences-- into data points that drive their business models. My research 
explores how these platforms act as both communicative medium and mediators of exchange, 
linking user interactions to monetization strategies. By analyzing app designs and user 
experiences, I uncover how intimate behaviours are increasingly shaped by algorithms and 
economic incentives. This study sheds light on the evolving nature of relationships in a data-
driven society. My research is informed by theories in political economy that reveal insight into 
how profit shapes human behaviour, which in turn shapes values. My research focuses on 
mapping exchanges of data between users of mobile dating apps, third parties, and parent 
companies. Mapping these exchanges will reveal the extent to which the pursuit of relationships 
takes place through data relations that are within control of the mobile dating apps, not users.

My research focuses on integration of solar photovoltaics (PV), heat pumps (HP), and thermal 
batteries (TB) for decarbonization of residential sectors in Canada. This sustainable system 
uses solar-generated electricity to run the HP to supply the space and water heating, while 
storing excess energy in TBs to improve reliability and reduce the grid dependency. The 
preliminary result of my study shows that combining PV and HP systems can achieve 30.6% 
self-sufficiency and 30.2% self-consumption whereas the PV+HP powered house can reduce 
carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to a conventional natural gas-heated home. 
Optimization of these systems under Canada’s extreme climate conditions to ensure consistent 
year-round performance plays important role. My ongoing research explores the integration of 
TBs with PV+HP systems to further enhance energy storage, reduce peak load demand, and 
increase grid resilience. This work supports Canada’s net-zero goals through practical, scalable, 
and sustainable residential energy solutions.

Predicting Microparticle Behavior across Different Environments 
 
Microparticle behavior is complicated. It depends on the material’s quality, ambient condition, and 
application. To predict particle behavior, such as aggregation, diffusion, dissolution, 
sedimentation, degradation, and surface interaction, requires a multidisciplinary approach that 
includes physics, material science, and computational modeling. Understanding this dynamic 
allows optimization for different applications, including drug delivery, cosmetics and personal care 
products, and nanotechnology. The aim of this study is to improve performance and innovative 
approaches for different applications by altering particle behaviors. My research structure relies 
on particle features (size, shape, morphology, porosity, and hardness) and environmental behaviors 
(ionic strength, medium, pH, and temperature). We employ modeling approaches such as 
analytical, numerical, and machine learning. My findings will help us accurately predict particle 
behavior and optimize, simulate, and accelerate formulation; reduce laboratory costs; and analyze 
environmental impact to ensure sustainability. This integrated approach is an invaluable tool for 
advancing both industrial and research practices.
