Good Grief – Supporting students’ losses in the classroom: Professional development of 
death and dying education 
 
A teacher may notice a student’s behaviour change in their classroom before learning about a 
loss a student is experiencing. There are two losses to consider: death loss and non-death loss, 
and both may be similar in the emotion and demonstration of grief.  
 
Teachers could be first responders and the first to have those vulnerable conversations. 
Supporting students’ losses can be challenging in the classroom. Still, the necessity of learning 
and recognizing awareness of those losses will help create strategies for teachers and students 
within a positive learning environment. 
 
My research is to provide these educators with critical approaches to support students who 
experience loss, especially when grief presents differently to individuals.

A successful virus infection means that viruses takes over the host cell and convert it into a factory 
producing new viruses. Changing some essential part on the host machinery to make it incompatible for 
viruses will result in resistance. Turnip mosaic virus is a virus of great agricultural concern that infects 
cruciferous crops globally. It relies on either one of the host factors to translate its genetic RNA into 
protein: eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) or its isoform. Modifying or deleting eIF4E or 
its isoform by genetic modification or editing, to date is one of the most common strategies to provide 
resistance against this virus, while plant host survives by the remaining one of the isoforms. I am looking 
for other host factors important for virus infection that are associated with eIF4E or its isoform to 
complement and provide back-ups for our current antivirus host targets in crops.

Rerouting Neurotrauma Recovery

Neurotrauma is an encompassing term used to describe injuries to the brain or spinal cord. 
Common in car accidents and falls, these debilitating injuries are incredibly complex. Following 
the initial physical injury, waves of both harmful and beneficial immune cells rush to the wound. 
The unfortunate net result of these immune cells is an exacerbated injury. Currently, no 
therapeutic drug is available to effectively treat neurotrauma and improve patient recovery. A 
collaboration at Robarts Research Institute has developed a new neurotrauma drug (anti-CD11d) 
to reroute immune cells during recovery. Unlike previous attempts which eliminated all immune 
cells, anti-CD11d selectively blocks waves of harmful immune cells and improves neurotrauma 
recovery. By using novel microscopy techniques, we can characterize molecular interactions 
between the anti-CD11d drug and immune cells. Understanding these interactions allows us to 
progress the development of anti-CD11d and address the global need for an effective 
neurotrauma therapy.

The motor functions of individuals poststroke can be affected due to sensory impairments, even 
if their muscle strength remains unaffected. Thus, understanding cortical activation associated 
with sensorimotor functions is critical for stroke recovery. This study aims to discover brain 
activation associated with sensorimotor functions poststroke using functional near-infrared 
spectroscopy (fNIRS). fNIRS is a useful neuroimaging tool to assess brain activation by 
observing blood hemoglobin levels. Up to 30 individuals with hemiparesis poststroke will be 
recruited if they can tolerate the study protocol. fNIRS assessments will occur near admission 
and will collect three tasks: 1) somatosensory stimulation of the ankle, 2) passive ankle flexion, 
and 3) active ankle flexion. Primary objectives include hemispheres asymmetry and hemoglobin 
differences between tasks. Secondary objective includes comparing clinical outcome measures to 
cortical activation. We anticipate changes in all objectives; however, the direction of change is 
unknown.

The relationship between Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) and their 
human host is best described as an evolutionary arms race. The host immune system is 
highly effective at identifying and eliminating invading HIV-1 and as such, HIV-1 must 
evolve novel mechanisms to evade host immunity in order to successfully replicate. 
 
Cellular immunity, which is conferred by restriction factors, is one such barrier HIV-1 must 
overcome in order to establish successful infection. Several restriction factors potently 
inhibit various stages of HIV-1 replication, and accordingly, HIV-1 proteins have evolved 
mechanisms to counter these restriction factors; consistent with the arms race analogy. 
 
One such restriction factor, SERINC5, drastically reduces HIV-1 virion infectivity by 
incorporating into virions as they egress from infected cells. My research primarily focuses 
on defining how the HIV-1 accessory protein Nef has evolved in such a manner to counter 
SERINC5, which thereby enhances HIV-1 virion infectivity.

The first five years form the building blocks for a child’s life their life, making the early years crucial for 
influencing the long-term wellbeing of children with developmental disabilities. Occupational therapy 
focuses on turning disability into ability in this life stage through early intervention programming. The 
24-h Movement Guidelines for the Early Years (which provide recommendations for children’s physical 
activity, sleep, and sedentary time) can support this development. There is a disconnect, however, in the 
use of this resource in early intervention, and children with disabilities are less likely to meet the 
guidelines than their peers. Occupational therapists could bridge this gap, using the guidelines as a 
resource for supporting children with disabilities, but we need to understand their capacity to do so. I 
will investigate the appropriateness of incorporating the 24-h Movement Guidelines as a paediatric 
occupational therapy early intervention approach, bridging physical activity research into occupational 
therapy practice.
