The Artist-Entrepreneur – Identities in Conflict

Society has traditionally posed the concepts of art and commerce as oppositional entities. 
However, cultural labourers have increasingly been recognized for their ability to adapt to 
precarious work conditions by taking on the more ‘commercial’ aspects of their careers (i.e., 
marketing and financing). This has led policy makers and scholars alike to position the modern 
artist as an entrepreneur, particularly within the context of popular music.  
While embracing an entrepreneurial edge allows musicians to build their careers and expand 
their reach, shifting between the historically clashing identities may lead artists to emotional 
burnout or free labour exploitation. This study will explore the history of artistic and 
entrepreneurial identities in Western society, and perceptions of musicians as entrepreneurs. I 
aim to understand the implications of the artist-entrepreneur moniker in the Canadian 
independent music scene. This investigation is pertinent across disciplines as more workers 
embrace gig work and other precarious labour situations.

Hand and upper limb impairment resulting from neurological disorders or stroke limits hand 
dexterity, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Currently, nearly 100,000 Canadians live 
with hand disabilities, and this number is expected to increase as the population ages. Recently, 
breakthroughs in mechatronics and robotics technology have provided an apt ground for designing 
wearable exoskeleton-type therapy devices, showing their potential as an alternative hand 
disability management approach. However, the mathematical equations that describe the complex 
hand motions are not accurate enough when applied to externally worn exoskeletons. To this aim, 
the focus of my research is to model and control a wearable exoskeleton device to assist people 
suffering from hand disabilities by developing new kinematic and kinetic equations that more 
accurately characterize device behaviour. Thus, the result of this study will allow the wearable 
exoskeleton devices to support hand motion more accurately, leading to better technologies and 
improved outcomes.

70 million. That’s the number of forcibly displaced persons worldwide who are fleeing conflict, 
human rights infringements, and violence (UNHCR, 2017). Between January 2015 to July 2017, 
Canada welcomed 84 000 refugees, 43% of whom are school-age (17 years old and under) 
children and youth (IRCC, 2017). 
  
According to researchers, an inclusive and compassionate education can increase refugee 
students’ academic achievement and well-being as well as support transitions to responsible 
citizenship, social cohesion, economic competitiveness, and political stability. My research 
engaged with settlement workers in schools (SWIS) in Ontario, Canada to learn about 
newcomer refugee students’ and their families’ needs and strategies to support their 
resettlement. 
  
Needs identified included English language learning, finances, trauma, mental health, a sense 
of belonging and social support. Strategies included building relationships and partnerships with 
parents, students, school staff and community organizations; intercultural education for all 
stakeholders and the role of advocacy for SWIS.

Internet-of-Mobile-Things devices generate massive amounts of data, which results in delayed 
application responses and lower user-experience quality. This is because current applications 
rely solely on cloud computing. Edge computing was introduced to accelerate data transfer by 
bringing cloud-like edge elements closer to users. These edges can consume a large amount of 
data locally, eliminating the need to send massive amounts of data to the cloud over the 
Internet. My research focuses on developing new migration techniques to support user 
mobility in 5G/6G networks, as current ones cannot support real-time or low-latency 
responses. In this approach, data should always be close to the user, and new migration 
techniques can expedite the transfer of data from the previous edge element in the user's path 
to a new one. Therefore, before the user reaches the new edge's range, data will be prepared 
to enhance the user experience when utilizing future mobile device applications.

More than just the powerhouse of the cell?

Mitochondria are energy providing, cell fate deciding organelles with a yet to be fully 
understood signaling complexity. Calcium, the mineral we are told to consume to ‘grow big and 
strong’, is also a universal signalling atom within the body. Entry of ionized calcium (Ca2+) into 
mitochondria is tightly controlled through the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU) protein 
complex because it regulates key enzymes involved in energy production and can signal cell 
death. The MCU complex has an inhibitory subunit (MCUb), which lies at the heart of my 
research. How the structure and function of MCUb changes in normal and dysfunctional health 
is poorly understood, yet this question surrounds numerous diseases ranging from heart disease 
to cancer. This one small protein holds so much undiscovered promise for understanding 
physiology and disease and for therapeutic development. My work aims to power scientific 
discovery through studying unique aspects of the powerhouse of the cell.

Your voice is important. The goal of my work is to ensure you feel empowered to use it. My 
work proposes continuous improvement of culture to increase trust and create wrap-around 
supports creating a safe space for speaking up. While policies exist at the institution level, they 
are inconsistent, vague, and not strongly enforced leaving individuals who witness misconduct 
with feelings of stress, anxiety, and at risk of taking prolonged sick leaves. Additionally, societal 
effects can include risks to research participants, fraudulent research, and a breakdown of trust 
when research misconduct is not reported. It is my hope that planting the seeds to introduce 
small, incremental changes to gradually shift culture through alignment and revision of existing 
institutional policies and procedures, clarification, and transparency of current processes, 
building awareness through quality assurance monitoring of ongoing research and education 
and training for prevention will decrease personal and society effects of retaliation.

Breast cancer is a devastating disease when it spreads and grows in the brain. This is common and is 
exceedingly challenging to treat. The standard radiation treatment for breast cancer growing in the 
brain is to target the growing tumours. However, within one year, half the patients will have new 
tumours growing again in other parts of the brain. Previously whole brain radiation was used to kill the 
undetectable cancer cells in the brain. It proved effective, however is withheld due to its side effects. My 
research focuses on finding an optimal amount of whole brain radiation that controls the cancer with 
reduced side effects. A novel imaging approach will be used to monitor the response of the brain and 
cancer following treatment. If this proves to be effective, then this can be translated to the clinic to 
combat the problem of breast cancers spread to the brain.

We order our world’s complexity through narrative. When we share or preserve our stories, we 
often materialize them as documents in forms as diverse as paper, monuments, and Tweets that 
“fix” our narrative plots. My research explores the materialized narration of the United Church 
of Canada (UCC)’s identity as a reconciling community. Documents created by the UCC are 
reference points to its ongoing relationship with Indigenous peoples. Living with these 
documents presents the community with ethical challenges and opportunities. Fixed narratives 
too easily categorize Indigenous peoples as less than fully human, subsuming them under the 
documents that are about them. This often is an inevitable precursor to genocide. Yet, documents 
are not just created; they are heard and read. Encountering an alternative narrative may lead us to 
realize that we are wrong and tell a new story. Thus, each UCC document is another opportunity

The worsening impacts of climate change call for adopting strategic and immediate actions 
simultaneously. Educating the new generations about environmental problems and fostering their 
environmental stewardship can serve both current and future targets. Accordingly, educational 
programs all over the world are being called upon to prioritize environmental education (EE). 
From a practical stance, garden-based learning is an instructional strategy that uses the garden as 
a dynamic teaching setting. School gardens appear to be a promising tool in EE, and thereby 
addressing gaps in EE policy implementation.  
My research investigates the role of school gardens in fostering connections between children, 
the community, and the environment, in the context of Ontario schools. This project advances 
knowledge about school gardens as a setting that nurtures environmental awareness and 
stewardship of students from all backgrounds. The project also informs teachers about their 
important role as agents of change in EE.

A globalized world requires globally minded people, but how do people become globally 
minded? My research takes a somewhat unconventional approach to answer this question by 
looking at the life stories of exemplary scholars in global education. 
 
While technological advances in transportation and telecommunication facilitate global 
mobility, the humanity is also facing challenges that go beyond the national borders. To take 
advantage of globalization and cope with global issues, international organizations and 
governments have proposed their visions and strategies of global education. 
 
In my research, I use the term global mindedness to refer to characteristics of ideal global 
citizens, people who represent what global education aims to achieve. To understand what 
constitutes global mindedness, and what kind of experiences may contribute to its 
development, I have interviewed six cosmopolitan education scholars. A thorough analysis of 
their life stories can also provide implications to the pedagogical design of global education.
