Local development from a basin perspective: the case of the Zaña valley basin” aims to describe the implementation of policies in the management of local development in the districts located in the Zaña valley basin. The central problem of our research is Is there in the local development management in the districts located in the Zaña Valley Basin a basin conception that is based on the rational use of natural resources, the development of social capital with identity and the sustainability of the environment? The object of study are the 8 districts that are located within the Zaña valley basin. It was determined that in the management of local development in the districts of the Zaña valley basin there is no basin approach. The public policies of the central government, regional and local governments are centralist and limit the spaces for participation of social actors. The need arises to incorporate a vision of account in the conception, design and implementation of public policies that values the concept of sustainability of natural resources and generates spaces and efficient mechanisms for the participation of the population. The rise in antibiotic resistance could be a growing public health concern among agents of respiratory tract infection, which is liable for morbidity, mortality, and costs in Africa. This study was designed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of bacteria isolated from patients with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) attending some Kebbi State, Nigeria hospitals. Three hundred and fifty sputum samples were collected from consented patients with the symptoms of LRTI attending six different hospitals in Kebbi State. The samples were all screened for significant bacterial growth using standard microbiological techniques. The bacterial isolates were identified using conventional biochemical tests and then confirmed using a commercial biochemical test kit (MICROBACT) according to the manufacturer\u27s instructions. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were identified using the disc diffusion method. Staphylococcus aureus was the foremost predominant bacteria isolated, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae, with an estimated percentage occurrence of 31.1% and 22.2%, respectively. Other bacteria isolated include Klebsiella oxytoca (13.9%), Escherichia coli (11.1%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (5.6%), Aeromonas hydrophila (5.6%), Acinetobacter baumannii (4.6%), B. pseudomallei (2.8%) and Proteus spp (2.8%). Most of the isolates were ssusceptible to piperacilin (51%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (61%), Azithromycin (70%), Ciprofloxacin (71%) and Gentamycin (74%), so as of ranking. High resistance was recorded in βeta-lactam antibiotics, erythromycin and vancomycin tested. Finally, it was revealed that Staphylococcus aureus is the most predominant bacteria isolated. Most of the isolates were resistant to the β-lactam antibiotic tested. Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamycin, and piperacillin remain helpful antibiotics for treating LRTIs in these centers

Background. Due to the lack of specific safe medications for the treatment of COVID-19, medications used for other similar conditions are being tested to alleviate the condition of COVID-19 patients, resulting in acceptable outcomes in some cases. Umifenovir (Arbidol®) is used to treat influenza viruses by inhibiting the fusion of the virus with the host cell. According to previous findings, umifenovir may inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection by interfering with the release of SARS-CoV-2 from inside the cell. This study aimed to determine the effects of umifenovir, a fusion inhibitor, versus lopinavir/ritonavir in treating patients with COVID-19. Methods. This study was a randomized controlled trial consisting of 90 confirmed COVID-19 patients divided into the lopinavir/ritonavir group and the umifenovir group. The lopinavir/ritonavir group received 100/25 mg twice, while the umifenovir group was given 200 mg thrice a day, in both groups, for seven days. Outcomes included mortality rate and the need for mechanical ventilation or intensive care unit admission. Length of stay in the hospital and ICU and the lab tests trend were also assessed. Results. The mortality rate and the need for admission to the ICU were significantly lower in the umifenovir group (8% vs. 27.5%; P-value = 0.02). Moreover, The levels of white blood cells were also lower in the umifenovir group than in the control group by day 10 (6.2 (5.3-7.4) vs. 10.8 (9.9-13); P-value <0.001). Conclusions. Umifenovir may reduce the need for admission to the ICU and mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 compared with lopinavir/ritonavir. The lab test trends were also in favor of umifenovir use.

    Get PDF
Despite the global efforts tuberculosis (TB) remains as one of the most important infectious disease and with the greatest impact on global public health, this situation has been aggravated in recent decades by the growing problem of drug resistance (DR). Such is the impact of the drug resistant in tuberculosis that would threaten the Millennium Development Goals. In addition to polymorphisms in genes associated with drug resistance in tuberculosis, new mechanisms have being described in recent years. Considering the above, the aim of this mini-review is to give a brief description of the traditional mechanisms related with drug resistance and to describe two of the new mechanisms that will have an important impact in the next future; efflux pumps and DNA damage repair mechanisms

Opogona sp. it is a pest that has not been identified in Peru, despite being present in many crops for years; the objective was to evaluate the habits, damage and hosts of the larval stage. An evaluation of cultivated and wild plants in the Satipo area was carried out through field visits and inspections, observing the damage caused by the larva in the stems and opening them with a knife. The results show that the larva is eruciform, reaches 43 mm long by 4 mm wide, the cephalic capsule is globose, dark brown to black, with a pair of short mandibles. It presents darker coloration in the first three segments of the body and a pair of transverse bands in each somite. The larva eats the bark by ringing the stem, which it protects with sawdust and droppings glued with silk threads; it makes a hole about 6 to 10 cm long and vertical in the stem where it lives, when pulling it it grabs it with its false legs, it presents photophobia; the damage manifests itself as ringing of the bark and a hole inside the stem that can measure between 5 and 10 cm long; the plant may show yellowing, but does not die. 9 cultivated plants and 2 wild plants have been found as hosts; 6 are woody and 5 herbaceous; of the families Rutaceae, sterculiaceae, lauraceae, fabaceae, passionflower, rosacea, euphorbiaceae and asteraceae, being the kudzú the most frequent host.
