Alternativas de manejo integrado de Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) en el cultivo de café
The leaf miner Leucoptera (Perileucoptera) coffeella (Guérin-Méneville, 1842) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), is one of the main insect pests that affect coffee crop, which is strategic for the sustainability of productive agroecosystems in the social, economic and environmental aspects. This document is a systematic review of this insect, addressing topics of interest such as taxonomic classification, main diagnostic characters and integrated pest management (IPM) alternatives, which can be implemented to reduce its potential damage to the crop; ranging from cultural control, biological control, ethological control and chemical control. To do this, more than 50 specialized documents were consulted, with the selection criteria being that they have been generated mainly during the last 10 years and that they are related to the topic of this work. Among important aspects to consider within IPM strategies for L. coffeella are: i) Use of traps with pheromones to monitoring and pest control; ii) Cultural labors such as management of vegetation cover and sanitary pruning in the coffee plantation; iii) Rational use of synthetic insecticides and the possible application of insecticides of botanical origin to prevent negative impacts on the beneficial functional biota and to favor the natural mortality factors of the pest; iv) Study of the climatic factors that favor the development conditions of the insect, even more so in the face of climate change; v) Use of cultivars resistant to L. coffeella and other phytosanitary problems of the crop.
Rate of post Covid-19 symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background. Covid-19 pandemic has led to global pandemic and substantial health, economic and social impact. The causative agent is coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) which belongs to the coronavirus family. The clinical picture of the infection ranges from a flu-like symptoms to severe pneumonia and mortality. Till January 2022, the cumulative number of cases exceeded 600 million worldwide with mortality rate of more than 6 million. Objective: to identify rate of total and individual presentations of post COVID-19 conditions. Methodology: the literature was reviewed till 1st July 2022, in six databases, we identified 5486 articles; after removal of duplicates and screening for eligible studies according to inclusion criteria, 17 studies were included for further qualitative and quantitative analysis. Results: the results showed high rate of post COVID-19 condition among patients. With prevalence rate of 5 to 10%, fatigue was the most reported symptom with prevalence of 34% among patients (RE: 0.33%, 95%CI: 0.32-0.35). The second highest common symptom was breathlessness with prevalence of 31% (RE: 0.31, 95%CI: 0.20-0.43). Mental health symptoms including anxiety and depression were also distinctly frequent. We also reported on different neurocognitive symptoms including attention and memory problems with rate of 16% (RE: 0.16, 95%CI: 0.11-0.22) and 19% (RE: 0.19, 95%CI: 0.14-0.26) respectively. Conclusion: it is apparent that a significant percentage of individuals with COVID-19 (45%) continue to grapple with a variety of persistent symptoms. Among these, fatigue and dyspnea emerge as highly prevalent issues consistently reported across various groups of patients. However, it is evident that a considerable portion of patients also contend with a diverse array of other lingering symptoms, displaying variability both in number and severity
Patterns of Antimicrobial Resistance in Urinary Tract Infection Pathogens: Analysis in a Provincial Hospital in Zimbabwe
Introduction. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections globally. Rising multidrug-resistant uropathogens in Zimbabwe underscore the need to review their susceptibility profiles. This study examines antimicrobial susceptibility trends of uropathogens in patients from Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. Methods: This retrospective study included 385 randomly selected UTI-positive patients from 2023. Midstream, clean-catch urine samples were processed using standard microbiological techniques, and statistical analysis was conducted. Results: More females (56.4%) than males (43.6%) had UTIs, with age groups 0–9 and 20–29 years most affected (16.6% each). The predominant uropathogens were E. coli (27.2%), K. pneumoniae (18.4%), Staphylococcus spp. (17.4%), and Enterobacter spp. (12.2%). E. coli was most susceptible to ceftriaxone (93%) and most resistant to doxycycline; K. pneumoniae was most susceptible to chloramphenicol (70.4%). Conclusion: E. coli was the most common uropathogen. Most uropathogens showed susceptibility to ceftriaxone, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol. However, Staphylococcus spp. displayed resistance to norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, and doxycycline. The high resistance rates highlight the need for antimicrobial stewardship and confirmatory testing before prescribing.
Endothelial molecule levels (VCAM-1, ICAM-1) in uncomplicated malaria cases in Lagos, Nigeria
Background. Elevated endothelial activation markers are linked to malaria syndromes due to the sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells in deep tissue vessels. This study evaluated vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) levels in uncomplicated malaria and their association with host factors. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four health facilities in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. Blood samples from children and adults were screened for malaria via microscopy, and plasma ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 levels were measured using ELISA. Results. ICAM-1 (1.03 × 106 ± 20,689.2 pg/ml) and VCAM-1 (1.11 × 106 pg/ml; range: 3,725–6,273,725 pg/ml) levels were significantly higher in malaria-positive cases compared to controls (p < 0.01). The geometric mean parasite density was 11,183 parasites/μl, but ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 levels did not correlate with parasite density (p > 0.1). Packed cell volume (PCV) was significantly lower in malaria-positive cases (p = 0.042), with ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 negatively correlating with PCV (p < 0.05). Both markers were also inversely associated with age (p < 0.05). Conclusion. VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 levels are elevated in uncomplicated malaria, independent of parasite density but negatively associated with PCV and age, highlighting the role of endothelial activation in malaria pathology.
