Community-Based Management Strategies in Sustainability of Rural Water Supply Schemes

    Get PDF
The sustainability of Rural Water Supply Schemes (RWSS), managed by communities, is a major concern in the developing world. A sustainable RWSS delivers safe and sufficient drinking water for a longer period to rural people. Community management was viewed as an accepted model that leads to sustainability, even though community management had difficulties and constraints in sustainability of RWSS due to social, technical, institutional and financial constraints. This paper reviews the sustainability factors of community managed RWSS. There is a need to take multi-stakeholder approach, a demand driven and community led approach, which ties these stakeholders like government, community and non-governmental sector for the effectiveness and sustainability of drinking water services. The synthesis evidenced that community management needs modifications, in terms of external factors, like, institutional support that include financial and technical support, trainings and administrative assistance to make RWSS sustainable. The community, like participation in all phases of planning, implementation, operation & maintenance, water tariff, sense of ownership, transparency, leadership and management are essential for the sustainability of RWSS. The participation by the community members in RWSS plays positive role for its sustainability. To conclude, analysis also highlighted commitment to community management should be pragmatic and rational. The scaling up of community management is an effective and efficient model to address the issues of sustainability in RWSS

This paper examined the impact of positive youth development initiatives on youth in Lahore, Pakistan through the provision of youth services. Youth is considered as one of the most important segments of the population in a country as it has to take over future roles and responsibilities. Currently, Pakistan is one of those countries which has the highest percentage of youth in its population. A survey of the literature showed that due to multiple socio-economic factors, the potential of youth has not been adequately utilized for the development of the country. One of the effective strategies being practised at the global level is an engagement of youth in the mainstream course of development. Using the quantitative method, 357 respondents were studied through a survey questionnaire. The respondents were students studying in 6 Catholic schools in Lahore where youth service projects have been implemented by Youth Engagement Service (YES) Network Pakistan. The findings revealed that the provision of youth services put a positive impact on the personality of beneficiary adolescents. After the provision of youth services, the majority of beneficiary youth was more caring towards other fellows, feeling more worthwhile within themselves and proved to be more useful for family and community at large. Furthermore, engagement of youth in civic activities turned an adolescent into a productive and outcome-oriented citizen. The study concluded that through positive youth development approach, youth can prove itself as a changemaker asset whose potentialities can contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of the country

Institutional Performance and Trade-Led Growth Hypothesis: Evidence from Pakistan

    Get PDF
Economic growth is a researchable debate in the context of trade openness relation in testing trade-led growth hypothesis. This study explores the relation of economic growth with trade openness to test the trade-led growth hypothesis by using a recently developed nonlinear ARDL model over the period 1984-2017 in Pakistan. The results reveal that trade openness affects economic growth differently when it decomposes into positive and negative components, and trade openness decrease has a more impact on economic growth in the presence of labor, capital, FDI and institutional performance as control variables. The mixed relationship of openness-growth in the long-run does not completely verify the trade-led growth and shows non-linear impacts of trade openness on economic growth in Pakistan. The study suggests the policies for government officials and policymakers after unearthing the asymmetric association between trade openness and economic growth that would help to make trade policies for Pakistan

    Get PDF
For recommendations, customers are increasingly having faith in suggestions over the internet. Online societal/social networks (OSNs) are frequently used in Tourism and tourists use them to gain knowledge and gather information about different tourist’s resorts. The main objective of the current research is to develop understanding about the effect of different independent variables such as apparent Ease of use, Belief in reliability, Functional belief and Switching Cost to determine Social Norms which ultimately effect Intention to Share knowledge.  This model helps to understand the underlying motives that influence consumers to share information about tourist’s resorts with others. Data was collected from the people who were using social networking sites for more than a year for tourism recommendations. Structural equation modeling was used for the data analysis and it was found the most of the proposed hypothesis were accepted validating presence of a significantly valid relationship between the variables. The study carries considerable theoretical and practical implications for researchers as well as tourism managers

Study was designed to examine the relationship between well-being and environmental factors and their influence on cardiovascular disease. Cross sectional and co-relational research design were adopted. Data was collected over a span of 04 months from Multan Institute of Cardiology (MIC) and from the cardiology ward 1-A Nishtar Hospital Multan. A purposive sample of 200 cardiovascular patients was requested to provide information regarding stressful life events, perceived stress, depression, social support and cardiovascular diseases. Sample of 200 cardiovascular patients consisted of 100 males and 100 females. Independent sample t-test, ANOVA as well as PLS-SEM (structural equation modeling) was used to examine the hypothesis.  Results informed about the positive impact of psychological stressors on cardiovascular diseases which was partly mediated by social support, because social support effect the way CVD patients perceives the stress full events as well as decrease the threshold of psychological stressors. It was concluded that psychological stressors (Depression, Perceived stress, Stressful life events) and low social support increases the severity of cardiovascular diseases within a short duration among cardiovascular patients. Patients with mild psychological stressors and high social support sustain a milder form of CVD disease e.g. Hypertension for longer time duration without shifting to sever form of cardiovascular diseases while on the other hand contrary happen in the case of high   level of psychological stressors and lower level of social support

An Econometric Analysis of Exigent Determinants of Trade Balance in Finland: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Approach

    Get PDF
A number of research papers analyzed the factors that may have impacts on the balance of trade for the effective macroeconomic policies but the results of these studies have created ambiguity which implies that further research is needed as the worsening trade balance can limit the economic growth of any country. Hence the current paper is an effort to study the short-run and long-run relationships among trade balance, real effective exchange rate, GDP per capita, urbanization, unemployment and inflation rate for the Finnish economy. Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing methodology to co-integration along with error correction mechanism is applied by using time series data from 1990 to 2019 for checking the existence of long-run equilibrium between explained variable and its various determinants. Empirical findings of ARDL show that the long-run relationship among the factors of the estimated model holds. The results indicate that real effective exchange rate, urbanization and inflation are having a significant but negative impact on Finland’s trade balance for both the short-run and long-run while the impacts of GDP per capita and unemployment are significant and positive on the Finish balance of trade. In addition to above, the structural stability of mean and variance of the error term for the estimated ARDL model is verified with the help of CUSUM and CUSUM square graphs. Therefore, a reliable policy measure to improve the balance of trade by encouraging the domestic production and curtailing the imports is suggested in Finland

    Get PDF
Perspicuous organization and persuasion are required in academic writing for creating unity, making claims, sequencing, and eloquence. Hedging is a distinctive aspect of academic writing. Hedging can be employed as a communicative strategy to decrease or enhance the strength of claims (Hyland, 1998). This research study explores the frequencies and grammatical categories of hedges in the research dissertations written by Pakistani authors. The corpus of the study contains 150 research dissertations of sciences and social sciences. The frequencies and forms of hedges are examined by utilizing Varttala’s (1999) classification of Hedges. Lists of hedges have been developed to identify the different categories of hedges. Instances of hedges have been extracted from the corpora with the help of AntConc 3.5.8 (2019) software. The results reveal that the authors from the field of social sciences are more careful and cautious in making their claims as compared to the sciences
