Penetration Testing, Vulnerabilities, and Ethical Hacking
The purpose of this thesis is to explore practical and theoretical examples of cybersecurity, through practical hands-on tasks and technical challenges, and studying real world examples. It focuses on three main areas: testing the Claremont Colleges network, completing the Stripe CTF 2.0 Web Edition challenge, and examining how tools and techniques from case studies can be applied to practical scenarios and future applications. Key objectives include identifying vulnerabilities in the Claremont network, specifically the Claremont McKenna College (CMC) Athenaeum login page, modernizing and completing the outdated Stripe CTF challenge, and analyzing case studies to draw parallels with these tasks while gaining a broader understanding of real-world hacking. In my thesis, I will explore penetration testing techniques and vulnerability exploitation. An overview of foundational concepts will be provided, followed by a breakdown of the tasks undertaken and the tools utilized. This project demonstrates how, with only a laptop and specific key skills, individuals can either secure or compromise information systems, which have major ramifications for institutions and private individuals
Beyond Rescue: Love, Leadership, and Systemic Change in Anti-Human Trafficking Advocacy
This thesis examines the narratives of anti-human trafficking advocates through oral histories and personal interviews to explore how systemic challenges, survivor leadership, and community-driven care intersect in combating human trafficking. It argues that trafficking arises from and perpetuates gender-based violence, racial inequities, and structural oppression. I draw from in-depth interviews with activists, including survivors like Wilnisha Sutton and faith-based leaders like Sister Jeanne Christensen. The findings reveal love and relational care as transformative frameworks within activism. This thesis critiques traditional punitive models and savior narratives, advocating for survivor-led initiatives and trauma-informed care that prioritize systemic reform and education. The thesis proposes actionable strategies in a toolkit for future activists. The thesis ultimately shows that there is a need for collective, intersectional, and empathetic approaches to disrupt cycles of trafficking in the short term and to help end the systemic imbalances that cause them in the long term

It is safe to say that our modern existence has grown to revolve around technology and will continue to rely on it for years to come. However, this reliance has also brought challenges that require careful oversight by the government.
With the advancement of innovative technology, there has been a growth in entertainment platforms like TikTok, where millions of users have found tight-knit communities online to share their interests and passions with. Beyond simply fostering connections, TikTok has also changed the economy by allowing users to launch successful careers and build personal brands, all while simultaneously influencing trends worldwide.
This thesis examines the impact of government regulations on technological startups, specifically TikTok, and explores how regulations can impact users— both positively or negatively—through income opportunities, community connections, and creative expressions. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of government regulations on foreign-owned companies like TikTok, focusing on key areas such as data privacy laws, consumer protection, and intellectual property rights. It explores the regulatory approaches of two economic powerhouses, the United States and China, and dives into the complex standpoints between lawmakers, entrepreneurs, and consumers. By providing a perspective on finding a balance between innovation and protection, this study further examines the advantages and disadvantages of various regulation policies aimed at protecting consumers and businesses. These findings offer valuable insights into regulations in the United States, highlighting the strict measures and compliance requirements that international companies must meet and abide by to compete in the U.S. market. From following data privacy laws to incorporating mandates under the Committee of Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), companies must follow regulations aimed at protecting national security, consumer interests, and ensuring a fair market for all. Additionally, this research underlines how government regulations can influence the competitive market as well as change the strategies of foreign-owned companies who are seeking access to operate inside the U.S.

A City of Value: An Analysis of the Right to the City in Dallas
This paper examines urban struggles in Dallas through the lens of the right to the city framework, as conceptualized by Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, and Manuel Castells. It explores the historical and systemic factors that have shaped the city\u27s urban landscape, focusing on issues such as racial and economic segregation, gentrification, environmental racism, and the displacement of marginalized communities. The analysis highlights how city policies and practices have failed to empower marginalized communities, often leaving them excluded from the benefits of urban growth and decision-making processes. Through case studies in Fair Park and West Dallas, this paper also demonstrates the resilience of affected communities and their ongoing struggle for the right to the city. It argues that Dallas must institutionalize principles that align with the right to the city, ensuring that all residents, particularly those in historically underserved areas, can shape and benefit from the urban spaces they inhabit. The conclusion calls for actions to dismantle systemic barriers and build an inclusive future where all Dallas residents can thrive
Discovery of Silver-Catalyzed Intermolecular Markovnikov Hydroamination of Olefins
Amines are a powerful functional group bearing great significance in daily life, with upwards of 40% of pharmaceutical products and 20% of agrochemicals possessing chiral amines. The hydroamination of olefins is one of several methods that generate an amine from an organic source, directly adding nitrogen across a carbon-carbon pi bond with complete atom economy. Traditional methods of hydroamination are challenged by the use of expensive transition metal catalysts facing limited supply. We herein report a silver-catalyzed, intermolecular Markovnikov hydroamination of styrene using benzyl carbamate as the nitrogen source. This methodology has proven to offer a more sustainable and economically practical alternative to traditional catalytic routes. The reaction exhibits stellar regioselectivity, providing the desired product in moderate to good yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via the formation of a nitrogen radical and undergoes enhanced conversion in the presence of mild, inexpensive oxidants
Effect of Paxlovid on Neurodevelopmental Disorder Diagnosis Outcomes in Offspring of Mothers Infected with SARS-Cov-2 during Pregnancy
The onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought concern over the effects that this virus would have on pregnancy and fetal outcomes, specifically neurodevelopmental outcomes. Maternal immune activation (MIA), caused by infection during pregnancy, is known to result in neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) diagnosis in offspring, typically autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This effect has already been observed in mothers who were infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy. However, in 2023, Paxlovid, the COVID-19 antiviral drug, became available to patients experiencing symptoms of the virus, including pregnant women. Consequently, this study seeks to determine whether the risk of an NDD diagnosis due to MIA decreases with Paxlovid use 3-5 days post-infection. In an observational cohort study, data will be collected on women who gave birth in the U.S. for one year, followed by data collection on their offspring for the first 18 years of life. Predicted results show differences between NDD diagnosis outcomes between offspring of mothers who were infected with COVID-19 and did not take Paxlovid (40% diagnosed) compared to those of mothers who were infected and did take Paxlovid (20% diagnosed). Additionally, increased risk of an NDD diagnosed in offspring of mothers who did not take Paxlovid is expected to be positively correlated with the progression of pregnancy of infection and with the severity of COVID-19 infection. Finally, predicted results will show that, compared to female offspring, male offspring are at a greater risk of an NDD diagnosis as a result of MIA from COVID-19 infection in the absence of Paxlovid use (45% diagnosis versus 35% diagnosis). Together, these predicted results point towards the efficacy of Paxlovid, both as a medication for COVID-19 infection and as a means to reduce the risk of an NDD diagnosis in offspring. Future research should investigate the effects that comorbidities and vaccination status have on these results
What Does Randomization Do?
In the health and social sciences, when it comes to causal inference, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard. The justification for granting RCTs this status is the claim that random allocation to different treatment groups addresses the problem of confounding variables by ensuring that any differences in observed outcomes across treatment groups can be attributed only to differences in treatment. I contend that this is a misunderstanding of what random allocation does and that once we see where this argument goes wrong, it becomes clear that the difference, concerning causal inference, between a single observational study versus a single RCT isn\u27t nearly as large as many health and social scientists seem to think
