Realer Than Real: Postmodern Tourism and Global Heritage Simulacra
This thesis examines the effects of sociological postmodernism on heritage sites around the world, drawing from semiology to characterize tourism as a mode of visual and cultural consumption. Using a case study approach, I examine how artistic and architectural hallmarks of culture are recontextualized within a postmodernist discursive framework to create hyperreal contemporary touristic encounters through the imposition of semiotic narratives
Aging and Misinformation Susceptibility
This paper reviews the mixed effects of cognitive aging on misinformation susceptibility, highlighting the often-overlooked resilience of older adults in combating misinformation
Synthesis and Characterization of Hyaluronic Acid-Modified ꞵ-Cyclodextrin Polymeric Nanocarriers for Dual Delivery of Doxorubicin and Quercetin in Multidrug-Resistant Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and highly metastatic subtype of breast cancer with limited treatment options due to the absence of hormone receptors and HER2 amplification. Multidrug resistance (MDR), mediated by the overexpression of ATP- binding cassette (ABC) transporters such as ABCB1/P-glycoprotein (P-gp), significantly reduces the intracellular accumulation and efficacy of chemotherapeutics like doxorubicin. Pawar et al. previously developed a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-based nanocarrier for the co-delivery of doxorubicin and quercetin, demonstrating effective MDR modulation in drug-resistant cancer models.1,2 Building on this foundation, I proposed the design of a hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified β-CD polymeric nanocarrier (HA-β-CD/QD) to enhance targeted drug delivery and therapeutic efficacy in TNBC. β-CD-based drug delivery systems (DDSs) offer high drug-loading efficiency and pH- responsive release, while HA facilitates active targeting via CD44 receptor-mediated accumulation.3 This details the proposed synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and in vitro evaluation of HA-β-CD/QD nanocarriers. By integrating the MDR-reversing properties of quercetin with the active targeting capabilities of HA, HA-β-CD/QD nanocarriers offer a promising strategy for overcoming drug resistance and improving therapeutic outcomes in TNBC. These experiments intend to lay the groundwork for future in vivo validation and clinical translation of β-CD-based drug delivery platforms
“Regression to the Mean”: The Confluence of Eugenics and Statistics in the 19th and 20th Centuries
The work of this thesis is twofold — first, qualitatively characterizing the confluence between the British eugenics and statistics movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and second, quantitatively analyzing the effect of this foundation on pedagogical materials in the growing field of statistics between 1880 and 1970. Towards the first goal, the history of the method of least squares, state statistics, and positive and negative eugenics are outlined, followed by a close reading of the foundational texts authored by Francis Galton and Karl Pearson that introduced linear regression. Towards the latter goal, English-language statistics textbooks published between 1880 and 1970 are analyzed using text-mining algorithms to establish the extent of their co-existence with hereditary and eugenic studies
The 150 Credit Hour Requirement for CPA Licensure and its Effect on CPA Candidacy and the Issuance of Financial Restatements in the US
The 150 credit-hour requirement for Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure in the United States aims to enhance professional standards but has created unintended consequences. This thesis examines the policy’s impact on CPA exam candidacy and financial restatements by firms, highlighting its role in deterring candidates from taking the CPA exam and exacerbating the shortage of qualified accountants. Regression analyses reveal a decline in CPA candidates following the implementation of the requirement. In addition, a differences-in-differences analysis shows that the likelihood of financial restatements due to problems with the originally filed statements increases after states implement the requirement. These results call into question the effectiveness of the 150 credit-hour requirement to achieve its desired goals
Diamond in the Rough: A Century of Education and Democracy at Deep Springs College
Deep Springs College, one of the great innovations in American higher education, is the subject of this close reading of its history, educational philosophy, and present state. Situated in the rugged eastern California high desert, the college has managed to survive, even thrive, despite innumerable challenges
The Impact of Lease Reporting Accounting Standard Changes on Balance Sheet Structure and Equity Market Risk Assessment
This study examines the impacts of Accounting Standards Update 2016-02, also referred to as ASC 842 for the scope of this paper. ASC 842 was issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in 2016, and it requires lessees to recognize right-of-use assets and lease liabilities on their balance sheets for fiscal reporting periods beginning after December 15, 2019. By essentially mandating the capitalization of operating leases, which previously were only recognized as annual rent expanse, ASC 842 marks a significant shift in accounting practices, altering the presentation of lease obligations and key financial metrics. Using panel data regression models, this research analyzes the standard\u27s effects on firms’ financial statements and consequent financial metrics, as well as the impact on the equity market’s assessment of risk. The findings reveal shifts in total liabilities and property, plant, and equipment values, offering insights into how ASC 842 impacts the firms\u27 investment decisions. They also show that equity markets responded with adjustments to Beta, a key measure of stock valuation risk
Play, Then: Reimagining The Classical Music Film
Play, Then is a 8-minute short narrative classical music film that centers on a young Chinese American cellist who must face his relationship with music when his mother asks him to play for his ailing grandmother. The prevailing context of my film is the genre of what I call “classical music films,” which are narrative films, usually fictional, that explore cultural depictions of classical music and musicians through a visual cinematic story. Play, Then subverts expectations in classical music films by positioning an Asian American classical musician as the protagonist of the film and featuring a lesser-known classical piece. As a dual thesis in media studies and music, this film is a culmination of my experiences writing, directing, and producing narrative films, and analyzing, performing, and writing about 19th century classical music as an avid violinist
