« L’outil de notre métier » : définir et enseigner l’empathie dans les programmes collégiaux
Empathy is a fundamental skill in developing trusting, respectful relationships, which is a required capacity for many college program graduates upon entering the Canadian workforce. However, little is known about how faculty define, value, and teach students to develop and effectively utilize empathy. A grounded methodological approach shaped the gathering of curriculum and interview data to assess relevant faculty understandings and teaching approaches. Faculty generally shared an understanding of empathy as ‘putting yourself in another person’s shoes’, while also valuing attention to emotions and a perspective-taking orientation. All faculty saw empathy as central to their students’ future success in the field, and to the well-being of Canadian society as a whole. A variety of teaching approaches were noted, with an emphasis on experiential methods. Faculty members expressed universal interest in further collaboration with peers.
A Literature Analysis on Stachybotrys chartarum and Connections to Sick Building Syndrome
Sick building syndrome is defined as components of infrastructure that are harmful to human health in various ways ranging from noxious, harmful building materials to toxic fungal contaminants (1). There is mounting emphasis on the need for healthy, sustainably developed buildings as the amount of scientific literature published about sick building syndrome increases. Specifically, there is growing attention regarding the presence of contaminant fungi in buildings and the possible adverse human health effects upon exposure (2). Further, the estimated prevalence of Canadian homes with indoor mold growth is pervasive due to unwanted moisture accumulation in building structures (3). Despite the increasing abundance of scientific research, the existing literature does refer to established knowledge gaps; this includes the need for more primary, quantitative research observing the health effects of indoor mold exposure (3). Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is thought to induce a variety of respiratory, mucosal, and dermatological symptoms in humans (1, 3, 4). These symptoms may arise by direct exposure to spores, indirect exposure or hypersensitivity to fungal antigens, or exposure to mycotoxins which may make inhabitants of contaminated buildings chronically ill (3). Mycotoxins are metabolite products of molds, typically found in mold spores which are the agents of sexual reproduction. The pathogenesis of mold sickness varies from species to species, but all molds found indoors should be treated as a potential hazard risk due to the unknown range of possible consequences after exposure (5). A comprehensive literature review examining the potential health effects of black mold exposure will help to emphasize and articulate the need for employers and homeowners to prioritize building decontamination
The Neurobiology of Anorexia Nervosa and Abnormal Reward Learning Processes: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Objective: Given the array of neuroimaging studies examining the neurobiology of anorexia nervosa, the purpose of this paper was to further highlight localized neurobiological abnormalities when examining reward learning pathways in patients suffering from AN.
Methods: Literature searches using PsycINFO, EMBASE, and MEDLINE were conducted in March of 2022 using search terms relating to AN, reward learning, and neuroimaging. Relevant studies that were included must be written in English, have at least one clinical sample of either acute and/or recovered adult and/or adolescent female patients with anorexia nervosa, be controlled studies with a healthy female control group, be published in a peer-reviewed journal, and containing a neuroimaging component.
Results: For this systematic review, 20 relevant studies were included to elucidate the brain regional and functional differences with respect to reward learning pathways in individuals with AN when compared to healthy controls. These differences include dopamine neuron and cortisol release abnormalities in relation to dopaminergic pathways, as well as regional differences involved in reward learning subconstructs that include reward expectancies, punishment sensitivity, social reward, and body dissatisfaction and body image distortion.
Conclusion: In examining the brain regional and functional differences across individuals with AN with respect to the reward learning construct, further research efforts that focus on these important reward learning abnormalities might help inform the development of new clinical interventions aimed at these particular pathways
A Conceptual model of mixed-integer linear programming water distribution system
Water is a basic part of our daily lives, as such effective water supply is of paramount importance. Thus, as a result of the rise in population size and water shortage there is the need for proper, suitable and optimal utilization of water resources to efficiently be distributed among the populace. The proper allocation and distribution of water in the field of network planning need to be modelled through mathematical parameters for objective of water distribution system. This mathematical approach requires of solving an optimization problem based on multi-objective function subjected to certain constraints of mixed integer linear programming objective function which is proportional to the cost of the water distribution network. This study present a conceptual model of multi-objective optimization proposed for determination of design parameters of water distribution system by considering the significant number of constraints, decision variables, cost and reliability objective functions. The model was proposed to solve the reliability problem of water production and reduce the design and operational costs
Revue Balzac, L’adaptation/Adaptation, n°6, 2023
Internationalization at Home: A Reflection on a Semester-Long Online Collaborative Project Between Canadian and Indian Students
In today’s global community, internationalization offers students a crucial advantage by developing their intercultural competence and global citizenship skills. Recent research on Internationalization at Home (IaH) has shown that students can benefit from this approach even without travelling. There has been minimal research conducted on how internationalization affects students’ attitudes towards environmental sustainability, which is another critical theme in our interconnected world. This study evaluates an IaH initiative’s impact on students’ environmental beliefs and values from Alberta, Canada, and Kerala, India.
As an IaH initiative, this project engaged students in online collaboration with students from a different world region. Participants worked collaboratively on four tasks and completed an individual reflection assignment. Student and faculty feedback shows that participants improved their knowledge of environmental issues and their commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, students also demonstrated stronger intercultural communication and global citizenship skills
A Domestic Cookbook: Containing A Careful Selection of Useful Recipes for the Kitchen: An Analysis of Malinda Russell’s Cookbook as an Indication of Black Knowledge and Agency
Malinda Russell's cookbook A Domestic Cookbook: Containing A Careful Selection of Useful Recipes for the Kitchen was the first known Black cookbook to be published in the United States. Published in 1866 at the brink of the formative Reconstruction Period, Russell's personal testimony, recipes, ingredients, and methodology reflect a period when Black American agency was on the rise after the Civil War. Russell's cookbook can be used as a powerful tool to recognize and analyze Black Americans as victims of violence, Black literacy rates, and Black generational knowledge and agency
