Dark Leaders: Examining the Relation Between Dark Triad Personality Traits and Leadership Styles in Business Students
An overrepresentation of dark personality traits exists among business executives. Research suggests that this higher propensity for dark personality traits also exists among business students (Bogdanovic et al., 2018; Krick et al., 2016; Vedel & Thomsen, 2017). However, how this relates to leadership and the development of effective leadership skills has yet to be investigated in a student sample of future business leaders. This study investigates the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy) among university students to assess the prevalence of these traits in business programs compared to other programs. Further, it examines how Dark Triad traits relate to various leadership styles across programs. A total of 277 undergraduates (67% female) aged 17-35 (M = 18.75, SD = 1.74) completed self-report measures of the Dark Triad and the Full-Range Model of leadership. Results revealed business students show higher levels of dark personality across all three traits. Results also showed that Dark Triad traits were negatively associated with Transformational leadership and positively associated with Laissez-faire leadership among students, with the exception of Narcissism across programs. The unexpected results for Narcissism, along with its differential relations with the Transformational subfactors, support the notion that highly narcissistic individuals may be prone to a pseudo-transformational leadership style. Implications for both the development of effective leadership courses in business programs, and for appropriate screening and selection of personnel into various organizational leadership roles are discussed
The Landscape Issue Needs a Metric of its Rhythms
An exhibition and project that deals with the relationship between the internal processes of a landscape and those of the culture that works and exploits it. In this case Galicia, a peripheral and minoritised culture
Analyzing the Effect of Central Bank Communication on Stock Markets and Exchange Rates
As communication becomes an increasingly important monetary policy tool, central banks must consider the influence of greater transparency on the financial markets. Greater transparency can be an additional source of volatility leading to broader macroeconomic problems. This paper analyzes the effects of central bank communication on the financial markets, focusing specifically on stock markets and exchange rates. Using an event study analysis on a panel dataset, it is determined that greater central bank communication reduces stock returns but appreciates the local currency. However, the effects of greater communication are asymmetrical and depend on the economic development of the country and the direction of the policy rate change. Consequently, central banks must analyze how their communication will be transmitted and utilized by the private sector to determine the overall effects of greater transparency and to mitigate any financial instability
European Identity and the Challenges of Turkish Accession to the European Union
In 2005, Turkey entered into negotiations for membership with the European Union. Turkey has been an important strategic ally to the European Union in the Middle East, explaining the mutual desire for closer ties between the two. While these negotiations showed promise early on, it has become increasingly apparent that Turkish accession to the European Union will not come easily, if at all. Officially, the European Union cites Turkey’s shortcomings on issues such as human rights as the reason for the stall in negotiations. However, upon closer inspection, it is evident that there is more at play, particularly as the European Union has been inconsistent in their approach to addressing human rights violations. Member states such as Poland and Hungary, which have recent human rights violations, have not faced the same kind of condemnation that Turkey has from the leaders of the European Union. The reality is that the European Union is largely united by its shared Europeanness and Christianity. As a result, due to questions over Turkey’s Europeanness and its large Muslim majority, the European Union is apprehensive to afford it full membership. It can be said that the European Union has maintained that Turkish accession is still possible in order to continue reaping the strategic benefits from close relations with Turkey
A level-set approach for a multi-scale cancer invasion model
The quest for a deeper understanding of the cancer growth and spread process focuses on the naturally multiscale nature of cancer invasion, which requires an appropriate multiscale modeling and analysis approach. The cross-talk between the dynamics of the cancer cell population on the tissue scale (macroscale) and the proteolytic molecular processes along the tumor border on the cell scale (microscale) plays a particularly important role within the invasion processes, leading to dramatic changes in tumor morphology and influencing the overall pattern of cancer spread. Building on the multiscale moving boundary framework proposed in Trucu et al. (Multiscale Model. Simul 11(1): 309-335), in this work we propose a new formulation of this process involving a novel derivation of the macro scale boundary movement law based on micro-dynamics, involving a transport equation combined with the level-set method. This is explored numerically in a novel finite element macro-micro framework based on cut-cells
A leader-followers game of emergency preparedness for adverse events
Natural disasters occur across the globe, resulting in billions of dollars of damage each year. Effective preparation before a disaster can help to minimize damages, economic impact, and loss of human life. This paper uses a game theory framework to set up a leader-followers model for resource distribution to several geographic zones before an adverse event. The researchers model population members who may choose to prepare in advance of an event by acquiring supplies, whereas others may wait until the last minute. Failure to prepare in advance could result in a significant loss due to the chance that supplies may no longer be available. Numerical simulations are run to determine how the leader should distribute supplies to maximize the preparedness of the overall population. It was found that population size is a significant factor for supply distribution, but the behaviour of individuals within a zone is also important. Much of the current resource allocation research focuses on the logistics and economics of supply distribution, but this paper demonstrates that social aspects should also be considered

“Useful Knowledge” in Charles-Alexandre Lesueur’s visual and textual accounts of Missouri in 1826
Artist and naturalist Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) valued his work as useful to science generally and to France in particular, including during the time he lived and traveled in North America from 1816 to 1837. Starting with Daniela Bleichmar’s concept of “visual epistemology: a way of knowing based on visuality, encompassing both observation and representation,” this essay claims that Lesueur’s art and scientific practice adhered closely to a belief in the authority of art from direct observation in nature, and they served different professional, educational, community, and potentially commercial purposes. It charts the conditions under which he produced the art, the purpose(s) of the art, the types of art (sketches, paintings, prints, landscape drawings), and the intended audience through four types of subjects from the expedition to Missouri in 1826: the challenges of scientific fieldwork, Blacks in Missouri, lead mining, and inland but especially riverside towns.Artist and naturalist Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) valued his work as useful to science generally and to France in particular, including during the time he lived and traveled in North America from 1816 to 1837.
