"My love is as a fever": Medical discourse on lovesickness, imagination, and emotions in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century France
This paper argues that French medical practitioners, particularly focusing on Jacques Grevin (1539 – 1570) and Jacques Ferrand (b. 1575?), made considerable contributions to medical discussions of lovesickness, imagination and emotions. Research on their writings revealed two things. First, a strong desire to relieve and understand the suffering of patients. Second, like most other physicians, a yearning to better comprehend the frontiers between the natural, preternatural, and supernatural realms. The ambiguity of these frontiers provided room for magic to penetrate the medical profession and disputations on love, lovesickness, and the role of the imagination and emotions played significant roles in the reshaping of the medical marketplace
Global stability of a HCV dynamics model with cellular proliferation and delay
In this work, we propose and investigate a delay cell population model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with cellular proliferation, absorption effect and a nonlinear incidence function. First of all, after having shown the existence of the local solutions of our model, we show the existence of the global solutions and positivity. Moreover, we determine the uninfected equilibrium point and the basic reproduction rate R0, which is a threshold number in mathematical epidemiology. After showing the existence and uniqueness of the infected equilibrium point, we proceed to the study of the local and global stability of this equilibrium. We show that if R0 < 1, the uninfected equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable, which means that the disease will disappear and if R0 > 1, we have a unique infected equilibrium that is globally asymptotically stable under some conditions. Finally, we perform some numerical simulations to illustrate the obtained theoretical results
The existence and uniqueness of solutions of a nonlinear toxin-dependent size-structured population model
In this paper, we study a toxin-mediated size-structured population model with nonlinear reproduction, growth, and mortality rates. By using the characteristic method and the contraction mapping argument, we establish the existence-uniqueness of solutions to the model. We also prove the continuous dependence of solutions on initial conditions
On the Representation of Non-Holonomic Power Series
Holonomic functions play an essential role in Computer Algebra since they allow the application of many symbolic algorithms. Among all algorithmic attempts to find formulas for power series, the holonomic property remains the most important requirement to be satisfied by the function under consideration. The targeted functions mainly summarize that of meromorphic functions. However, expressions like tan(z), z/(exp(z)-1), sec(z), etc. are not holonomic, therefore their power series are inaccessible by non-pattern matching implementations like the current Maple convert/FormalPowerSeries up to Maple 2021. From the mathematical dictionaries, one can observe that most of the known closed-form formulas of non-holonomic power series involve another sequence whose evaluation depends on some finite summations. In the case of tan(z) and sec(z) the corresponding sequences are the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, respectively. Thus providing a symbolic approach that yields complete representations when linear summations for power series coefficients of non-holonomic functions appear, might be seen as a step forward towards the representation of non-holonomic power series.
By adapting the method of ansatz with undetermined coefficients, we build an algorithm that computes least-order quadratic differential equations with polynomial coefficients for a large class of non-holonomic functions. A differential equation resulting from this procedure is converted into a recurrence equation by applying the Cauchy product formula and rewriting powers into polynomials and derivatives into shifts. Finally, using enough initial values we are able to give normal form representations (Geddes et al. 1992) to characterize several non-holonomic power series. As a consequence of the defined normal relation, it turns out that our algorithm is able to detect identities between non-holonomic functions that were not accessible in the past. We discuss this algorithm and its implementation for Maple 2022.

Computing Intersection Multiplicities with Regular Chains
We extend a generalization of Fulton’s intersection multiplicity algorithm to handle zero-dimensional regular chains as input, allowing the generalization of Fulton’s algorithm to compute intersection multiplicities at points containing non-rational coordinates. Moreover, we describe the implementation of this extension in Maple, and show that the range of input systems for which intersection multiplicities can be computed has increased substantially from existing standard basis free intersection multiplicity algorithm available in Maple. Lastly, we show our implementation of the generalization of Fulton’s algorithm often outperforms the existing standard basis free intersection multiplicity algorithm, typically by one to two orders of magnitude

Another University is Possible? : A Study of Indigenizing and Internationalizing Initiatives in Two Canadian Postsecondary Institutions
The aspirational postsecondary strategies of Indigenizing and internationalization claim to address pressing political questions such as racism and systemic inequities in the university. Through close examination of these initiatives in two key postsecondary institutions in Toronto, Canada, we show how these priorities instead betray strategic investment in diversity in three specific ways: First, universities are positioned as a horizontal ‘community of changemakers’ that are themselves disarticulated from global relations of inequities. Next, international and Indigenous students’ welcome is made conditional and contingent on their becoming ‘diversity informants’ for the university and its normative membership. Related to that, the claims of curricular diversity remain ‘performative’ and thereby reify established epistemic hierarchies. Finally, while the university is cast as a ‘fraternal community’ these various strategic priorities are managed and executed separately, thereby foreclosing opportunities for robust conversations across the university communities.

Phonetic variation in transgender speech: the role of speaker agency in gender speech styles
While language and gender is a long-standing linguistic field, research including transgender and non-binary speakers is a newer and growing body of work. This case study explores the way transgender and non-binary speakers express their gender identity phonetically through sibilant duration and use of utterance-final high rise intonation (HRI). The data was gathered through remote interviews with five adult transgender speakers of English where participants were asked questions about their transition and views on gender expression, and given a reading task to ensure comparable phonetic samples. The results indicate that speakers are able to use both sibilant duration and HRI to agentively and authentically express their gender. Future research building on this study would contribute to a nuanced and diverse understanding of gender expression in speech and benefit transgender communities by contributing an inclusive body of literature
