Substituting non-unit formal power series into formal power series is a well-understood concept. This article describes a sense in which one can define substitution of unit formal power series, implemented in Maple’s MultivariatePowerSeries package

    No full text
Linda Hutcheon is a pioneer on cinema adaptation, with her book A Theory of Adaptation (2006), where she envisions adaptation as a transmedial process rather than as a faithful relationship a film must respect with a book. She has rejuvenated research in the field, overwhelmed dead-ends encountered by the adaptation critique, and offered thrilling perspectives on how to conceive such relationships between medias as different as comics, novels, drama, opera, video games, etc. Although her research interests now shifted to the operatic genre, she was as kind as to answer my questions for this first dossier of Transcr(é)ation.

Application of ant colony optimization metaheuristic on set covering problems

    No full text
Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) metaheuristic is a multi-agent system in which the behaviour of each ant is inspired by the foraging behaviour of real ants to solve optimization problem. Set Covering Problems (SCP), on the other hand, deal with maximizing the coverage of every subset while the weight nodes used must be minimized. In this paper, ACO was adapted and used to solve a case of Set Covering Problem. The adapted ACO for solving the SCP was implemented as a computer program using SciLab 5.4.1. The problem of determining the optimal location of Wi-Fi Access Points using the 802.11n protocol in the UP Los Banos Math Building was solved using this metaheuristic. Results show that in order to have 100% coverage of the MB, 7 access points are required. Methodology of the study can be adapted and results of the study can be used by decision makers on related optimization problems

Media Discourse of Community Support for Frontline Healthcare Workers During the First Month of the COVID-19 Pandemic

    No full text
Introduction: The mental health of frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) can be challenged and strained during an infectious disease outbreak. Community support, as experienced in past outbreaks, may be helpful in mitigating these psychosocial effects. Examining the current unfolding of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic for new insights, this study sought to understand how community support is represented and perceived as valuable to HCWs in written press media. Methods: Utilizing a media discourse methodology, written news media from the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic was sought for analysis. Included news media consisted of articles discussing community support for HCWs in London, Ontario.          Results: A total of forty news articles pertaining to community support for HCWs was collected and analyzed. Forms of community support depicted by press media fell into the categories of acts of solidarity, discounted goods, donations of personal protective equipment, and personal services. The underpinning perceptions of news articles was community support for HCWs had a positive influence on HCWs well-being. Direct discussions with HCWs or representatives of HCW’s in press media only further reinforced this discourse of benefice. Conclusion: This analysis shows that community support for HCWs has been present since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As this crisis progresses, additional research should be conducted to monitor this discourse media for change in representation of and reception by HCWs

Cyberbullying Amongst Post-Secondary Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    No full text
Literature on cyberbullying has traditionally focused on youth from ages 12 to 17 within a middle to high school context, neglecting the experiences of post-secondary students. Post-secondary students have arguably more complex experiences with cyberbullying because of various power differences within post-secondary institutions, social relationship changes, and less support from institutions (Myers & Cowie, 2019). Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic caused students to be predominantly online, which changed social contexts because of the affordances social networking sites can offer. This paper addresses the gap in previous literature by investigating the perspectives of post-secondary students’ experiences with cyberbullying during COVID-19. This paper considers multiple definitions/perspectives on what cyberbullying is, as there are variations of the definitions in the literature. Cyberbullying can take on multiple forms, such as discriminatory practices based on gender/religion/ethnicity, flaming, trolling, blackmail, and social exclusion. (Myers & Cowie, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence that cyberbullying has been a prevalent issue for post-secondary students during COVID-19, and as a result policy implications need to be put in place to help them cope. The main objective of this research paper is to stimulate discussion regarding cyberbullying at the post-secondary level as an issue that needs to be addressed. Moreover, institutions need to implement prevention measures and take responsibility for what happens online, not just offline, because of a highly networked society

    No full text
Training in research methods is important for improvement of healthcare delivery and population outcomes. Graduate programs of public health play a critical role in offering such education to current and future healthcare professionals as well as entry level learners with no experience in the field. A key skill across all fields of research methods and public health practice is protocol writing. It is unknown if teaching students research methods through protocol writing is a successful strategy and whether students find it to be helpful as they pursue health professions. The objective of this study was to describe the design and evaluation of a research methods course focused on protocol writing among students enrolled a Masters of Public Health Program. A case report design including description of course content, method of evaluation, and course delivery are provided. The setting was the Population and Public Health Research Methods course at a publicly funded institution in Canada. The first three cohorts of students (2016-2018) enrolled in the course were evaluated during the course period and six months after completing the course. A total of 51 students completed the survey, and the majority were students were very or extremely satisfied with the course. Overall students expressed that the course well-prepared them for their practicum or thesis work and post-graduation plans. Findings suggest that using protocol writing as a tool for teaching research methods was well-received by students and prepared them for both their potential career paths and for future research.
