The purpose of this study was to examine the association between greater engagement (i.e., number of times participated) in mindfulness exercises administered in large university lectures and students’ writing self-efficacy. For eight weeks, a breathing exercise was administered to students in one lecture section, and a progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) exercise was administered to students in another lecture section of the same course. Participants (n = 147) completed measures of writing self-efficacy before (T1) and after (T2) the eight-week exercise period. Engagement was greater in the breathing exercise than in the PMR exercise (p < .05). Writing self-efficacy was marginally greater (p = .08) at T2 for those administered the breathing exercise than for those administered the PMR exercise. Correlational analyses further showed that engagement in the breathing exercise was associated with writing self-efficacy at T2 (p < .01), but engagement in the PMR exercise was not (p = .21).
Normative competence, autonomy, and oppression
Natalie Stoljar posits that purely procedural theories of autonomy are unable to explain the ‘feminist intuition’, which is the idea that the internalization of false and oppressive norms are incompatible with autonomy. She claims instead that an account based on ‘normative competence’ – which requires true beliefs and critical reflection – can explain why oppressive norms should be excluded as legitimate decision-making inputs. On my view, however, the normative competence approach is subject to a worrying problem. While Stoljar's view successfully problematizes the internalization of oppression, her view misattributes non-autonomy also to those who perpetrate the oppression. I suggest that this is implausible, arguing instead that we can establish an asymmetry of autonomy between those who oppress others and those who are made target of oppression
Blaming from Inside the Birdcage: Strawsonian Accounts of Blame and Feminist Care Ethics
This article notices a trend in work done by philosophers who build on P. F. Strawson’s account of the reactive attitudes; it looks as though philosophers supplement Strawson with (or claim that Strawson has underlying commitments to) a more robust ethical program in order to address questions concerning the moral appropriateness of the reactive attitudes. I argue feminist care ethics can serve as a promising moral supplement to Strawson. Then, I diagnose a problem in Strawson— namely, the assumption that members of moral communities will express all three kinds of reactive attitudes (toward the self, directly toward others, and indirectly on behalf of others). Once we consider these three expressions from a feminist perspective, it becomes clear that while some may express indignation on behalf of others and guilt toward themselves, many will not express resentment directly toward others for good reasons under oppressive conditions
Fantastical Realism and Realistic Fantasy: The Development of Disney’s Animation as Analyzed Through Erwin Panofsky Theories in Connection to Live-Action Cinema
This essay grapples with Erwin Panofsky's essay "Style and Medium in the Motion Pictures" by analyzing animation whilst taking live-action cinema into account. It is because animation embodies the very possibility of cinema that it would evolve similarly, testing out realism and serious storytelling in the general trajectory of live-action films despite people’s nostalgia for its older cinematic form, especially since it has become something of cinema’s cinema, where animation, and Disney, are viewed as lower entertainment for the masses as a form of escapism and consumerist Hollywood storytelling while also sometimes trying to be more, all features Panofsky did not condemn when analyzing regular cinema.
The Windowflicks Project: 2020 and Beyond
This essay analyses and explores the creation of "Windowflicks." Due to the unique circumstances of 2020 regarding the pandemic, there was a chance to create. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the cinema industry came to a grinding halt across the globe and Berlin was no exception. However, the circumstances of 2020 led to the creation of "Windowflicks," a creation that sought to amend the feeling of loneliness one may feel while streaming a film alone.
On approximating initial data in some linear evolutionary equations involving fraction Laplacian
We study an inverse problem of recovering the intial datum in a one-dimensional linear equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions when finitely many values (samples) of the solution at a suitably fixed space loaction and suitably chosen finitely many later time instances are known. More specifically, we do this. We consider a one-dimentional linear evolutionary equation invliing a Dirichlet fractional Laplacian and the unknown intial datum f that is assumed to be in a suitable subset of a Sovolev space. Then we investigate how to construct a sequence of future times and choose n so that from n samples taken at a suitably fixed space location and the first n terms of the time sequence we can constrcut an approximation to f with the desired accuracy.
This study examines relationships between demographic attributes of older adults, information challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and skepticism about the efficacy of COVID-19 preventative measures (social distancing, mask wearing, good hygiene). A 12-question survey was distributed on the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform in late June 2021, receiving 400 responses. Findings indicate that gender, political affiliation, relationship status, family closeness, and perceived family control over one’s information source preferences are the greatest predictors of elevated gaps in information and skepticism towards COVID-19 prevention. Specifically, in this study, married, conservative men with close family ties often expressed elevated inadequacy of information and COVID-19 skepticism.
Preventing Youth Homelessness in the Context of Covid-19: Complexities and Ways Forward
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has magnified detrimental social and health experiences and consequences for youth at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Recent research indicates that heightened household tensions due to stay-at-home orders, coupled with pandemic-related financial insecurities, have worsened pre-existing factors for many young people, particularly for those experiencing stigma and violence. As a result, it can be projected that the risk and experience of youth homelessness will intensify. In spite of this, there has been scarce attention to the impacts the current context has on these vulnerable groups. This commentary aims to bring attention to the prevailing issues and challenges faced by youth at-risk of homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides crucial considerations for preventative solutions by incorporating the Roadmap for the Prevention of Youth Homelessness Framework. Based on research across fields, we offer insights for equity-focused, collaborative interventions, focusing on the education and social services sectors
An omnipresent gaze: Men's enactment of coercive control in the private sphere
Societal norms and values create a stage in which social performances are evaluated through a critical gaze as either acceptable actions that reflect the morals of society or reprehensible actions that threaten the identity of society and thus must be dissuaded through acts of stigmatization. Within the frontstage (i.e., socially perceptible sphere) norms of decorum and social presentation of egalitarianism, stigmatize acts of gender based domestic violence. However, within the backstage (i.e., socially imperceptible sphere), acts of domestic abuse can remain unnoticed by the public and thus proliferate away from the stigmatizing gaze of society. While acts of overt violence (e.g., physical punishment) have become socially denounced within the frontstage, there persists a disciplinary regime embedded within social institutions and legitimized through social normative values and morals (i.e., patriarchal social order). Women’s entrapment within the front/backstage is perceived as a socially legitimized male domination and control that obfuscates the systems of discipline and punish inherent within coercive control
